Gut health comes under the spotlight as its now implicated in many diseases

Improving your gut health is a simple way to make a real difference to your health and wellbeing, particular since it is now implicated in many diseases.

It’s also that time again when we pledge to become fitter, better versions of ourselves. In fact, the majority (61%) of British women make at least one New Year’s resolution, according to a new survey commissioned by constipation treatment Dulcolax. Health resolutions usually top the list: more than a third (37%) of women have pledged to eat more healthily and exercise more (35%), 14% have said they’ll aim to drink less alcohol, and more than one in ten (12%) have used the New Year to try a fad diet.

The vast majority fail to stick to their plans, however, with research also showing that 82% of women broke their resolutions last year*, with over half (62%) breaking them in 30 days or less*. A quarter (25%) say they got bored*, one in five (20%) say their resolution didn’t fit with their life*, while 17% say their lack of will power is to blame.

The research from Dulcolax also shines a light on the possible secrets to success with one in five (19%) women saying they would make more resolutions if they were easier to stick to and 13% would if their new habit had more of a noticeable impact on their lives.

Kate Arnold is a nutritionist and gut expert with years of experience helping clients make healthy changes. She says: “While it’s a good idea to re-examine your habits to make some healthy goals for the year ahead, completely overhauling your lifestyle in January is almost guaranteed to fail. I always recommend making realistic New Year’s resolutions, broken down into achievable and measurable steps so you can see your progress. We all slip up now and then. Instead of beating yourself up every time you reach for the biscuit tin or get the bus instead of walking home, remember that every day is an opportunity to take control of your health.”

Kate Arnold continues: “If kick-starting a healthy lifestyle feels like a mammoth task, focusing on optimising your gut health could be a simple way to improve your overall wellbeing. Eating plenty of fruit, vegetables and soluble fibre like porridge, and drinking lots of water will keep your digestive system working well, while gentle exercise will keep your gut and bowel working as they should. Our gastrointestinal system, and particularly our gut flora, has a significant impact on the rest of our body – affecting everything from moods to weight. Anyone who’s had even a fairly minor problem with their digestion, like a bout of constipation, knows it can massively affect how you feel. Instead of setting yourself another unrealistic resolution that won’t last longer than the Christmas tree, try taking care of yourself by looking after your gut.”

If lifestyle changes aren’t working, and you find yourself experiencing constipation, you may need a little extra support in the form of a treatment, like Dulcolax. Dulcolax tablets, £2.24 for a pack of 20, provide predictable overnight relief from constipation and are available from pharmacies and supermarkets nationwide.

Further tips and advice:

If trying to overhaul your health seems like a mammoth task this New Year, focusing on your gut is a simple and effective way to improve your overall health and wellbeing. To make 2017 the year you take control of your gut health, nutritionist Kate Arnold has the following tips:

Eat lots of the good stuff – fruit and veg are superstars for a reason. As well as containing essential vitamins and nutrients for the whole body, they’re high in fibre which is crucial for a strong digestive system, keeping you regular and avoiding issues like constipation. In particular onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, dark green leafy vegetables and unripe bananas help promote the right environment for gut flora to grow
Avoid junk food – processed food tends to be higher in fat, salt and sugar: all of which can overload your system and put pressure on your gut. Cooking for yourself is also a great exercise in mindfulness and a stress reliever, plus you know exactly what you’re eating
Stay hydrated – don’t overlook liquids as they also impact the gut. Avoid too much dehydrating caffeine and alcohol, and drink plenty of water
Eat slowly and mindfully – really paying attention to your food and not shovelling it down means you can appreciate what you’re putting in to your body, so you’re more likely to pick things that are good for it, rather than choosing convenience or cravings.
Eat good fats – fatty oils like omega-3 are essential for your brain, and if you’re feeling good, you’re more likely to take good care of yourself. Pick oily fish, nuts and avocados, and avoid trans fats or partially hydrogenated oils which have a negative impact on your body and mind in the long term
Check for intolerances or allergies – try eliminating a certain food for a while if you suspect you’re intolerant, and get tested if you’re worried
Eat smaller portions – sometimes it takes a while to realise we’re full so we can end up overeating, which can make our digestive systems sluggish and cause constipation. If you’re still hungry in half an hour, have some more!
Write a food diary to see if you’re really eating enough of the good stuff, and not too much of the bad. Looking at your food for the week can show up any gaps or excesses
Figure out triggers for bad habits – a food diary is also helpful here. Write down how you felt and what was going on at the time of eating to see if there are certain things that affect your eating, e.g. eating sugary, high-fat foods when you’re stressed
Talk to your doctor – if you have specific concerns always talk to your doctor

Scientists discover how to reverse aging by ‘eating’ mutant DNA

Is there really a cure for ageing? Scientists discover breakthrough procedure to replace specific parts of ageing cells by getting them to eat themselves to death.
• As we age, our mitochondrial DNA mutates, deteriorating and eventually killing off cells
• Mitochondria are inefficient naturally repairing mutations
• Scientists at Caltech and UCLA have developed a way to trigger mitochondria to clear out mutated genes
• So far its worked on flies but like may pave the way for age-halting ops on human

A landmark study has identified a new way to replace ageing cells in our body.
The research by scientists at Caltech and UCLA could pave the way to developing nip-n-tuck style procedures that reverse and slow the ageing process.

The experiment targeted mutated DNA inside our mitochondria – the ‘battery’ of our cells. As we age, our DNA breaks down and mutates. But unlike other parts of the body, the mitochondria are not very good at repairing DNA.
But now, in a groundbreaking procedure, the Caltech-UCLA team has found a way to manipulate genes so that they break down and remove mutated DNA, regenerating the cells.
The operation is a twist on an already-documented natural procedure called autophagy (‘self-eating’). As a result of autophagy, cells can digest dysfunctional mitochondria, clearing the way for healthy replacements.Research into autophagy that earned a Nobel Prize this year. But prior to the Caltech-UCLA it has not been clear whether this process could also promote the selective elimination of mutant or ageing DNA.

The accumulation of mutant mtDNA over a lifetime is thought to contribute to aging and degenerative diseases of aging such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and sarcopenia— age-related muscle loss and frailty.Inherited defects in mtDNA are also linked to a number of conditions found in children, including autism.

To test their method, the team used a common fruit fly.
They focused on mitochondrial DNA in the muscles it uses to fly, since this is one of the most energy-draining tissues in the animal kingdom.

Like in humans, fruit flies’ muscles show some of the clearest signs of ageing.
Fruit flies and humans are share many disease genes.
In the experiment, the fruit fly was genetically engineered so that 75 percent of its mtDNA was mutated early on.

They then artificially increased the activity of genes that promote mitophagy.
In doing so, the fraction of mutated mtDNA in the fly muscle cells was dramatically reduced.
One gene in particular – called ‘parkin’ – reduced the fraction of mutant mtDNA from 76 percent to 5 percent when it was overexpressed.

mitochondria
Our goal is to create a future in which we can periodically undergo a cellular housecleaning to remove damaged mtDNA from the brain, muscle, and other tissues
Bruce Hay, Caltech professor of biology and biological engineering
Another gene – called ‘Atg1’ – reduced the fraction to 4 percent.
These are both genes which seem to be underactive in elderly people and people with degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s.

‘Such a decrease would completely eliminate any metabolic defects in these cells, essentially restoring them to a more youthful, energy-producing state,’ Professor Hay said.
‘The experiments serve as a clear demonstration that the level of mutant mtDNA can be reduced in cells by gently tweaking normal cellular processes.’
He added: ‘Our goal is to create a future in which we can periodically undergo a cellular housecleaning to remove damaged mtDNA from the brain, muscle, and other tissues.
‘This will help us maintain our intellectual abilities, mobility, and support healthy aging more generally.’

Living DNA – find out where you really came from!

Living DNA is a personal DNA service, designed to help people understand more about themselves and where they came from in unparalleled detail.

A sample is collected from inside the mouth using a swab and the DNA analysed against various DNA databases of historical population groups to track down your ancestry.

From the ability to break down your ancestry across 80 worldwide regions, making it useful for everyone no matter which countries your ancestors are from, to breaking down British ancestry among 21 regions, the power of a Living DNA ancestry test is like nothing else.

living-dna

The Living DNA test costs ÂŁ120 and is a popular gift

But that is only the beginning, as new discoveries are made we update your results offering you ongoing insights over time.

Living DNA is only able to establish the percentage similarity of your DNA to the population samples available in its reference dataset. With regards to historical population groups, such as the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, it can make inferences based on what present-day populations your DNA ends up being similar to, and this is included the text of your results.

Time to get the plane to Marrakesh – it’s sunny and 20 degrees!

by Avril O’Connor

Morocco  is one of those exotic places that most of us dream about visiting.  In the past because of its ‘in’ destination status its been very expensive particularly during the peak season which is basically our winter – when temperatures are more agreeable.

So at the end of our summer I looked around for somewhere warm but not long-haul and Morocco came back onto the agenda. But would the weather still be decent in September I contemplated?  Needless to say I should not have worried as temperatures were in the 40s and locals told me the week before it was even hotter touching 50.

I was attracted by the exotic architecture of Marrakesh, against the beautiful backdrop of the snow-capped Atlas mountains. The pink city of Marrakesh is one of the great cities of the Maghreb, (Africa west of Egypt and north of the Sahara) in an oasis setting.Beyond the city are dramatic gorges, valleys and sculpted sand dunes.

As a lone traveller, although I was drawn to the wilderness I thought it wise to stay in Marrakesh as this was my first visit. I was surprised by the huge choice and availability and costs of hotels – in part I conclude due the political instability in many of the countries in this part of the world.

So the choice of where to stay was mainly between the boutique hotels in the medina – but you more often than not will find yourself surrounded by squalor and poverty  as soon as you walk outside the door or the newer package style hotels in the ‘zone touristique’.  Unless of course you have opted to stay somewhere outside of Marrakesh in the Atlas mountains.

I chose a hotel in the ‘zone touristique’ with an excellent spa – my only mistake was picking one that does not serve alcohol, probably the only one in the whole of Marrakesh I am told!  There were few Europeans, mostly holidaymakers from other Arab countries, and most of the ladies were burins in the 2 pools. Luckily there was a French Carrefourr supermarket down the road in a European-style shopping mall with all kinds of food and drink on offer.

Marrakesh is a city of contradictions – extreme poverty on one hand and Ferraris roaring down the road in the new upmarket Hivernage district where there is a huge European style mall surrounded by eateries and bars aka the Buddha Bar.  Then in the medina you can sit above the hoards and watch the whole world unfold – food stalls belching smoke, some men with monkeys in pampers who were trying to get the tourists to hold them for money, the beggars, hawkers and people going about their daily lives.

sofitel_marrakech_lounge_and_spa_hotel_01

Sofitel is one of the best 5* hotels in the Hivernage with a rooftop bar

The best thing about my hotel – the Mogador Palace Agadal was the spa, in which I aimed to try a different treatment daily.  The were all excellent treatments and relatively inexpensive compared to UK spas. The cost per night for a huge room with a king-size bed and a balcony leading onto gardens was 392 euros (ÂŁ336) for 8 nights without meals including 10% VAT

The traditional harman experiences focus around exfoliation –  getting rid of tired and dead skin – and is a great rejuvenator, leaving skin like velvet. The exfoliation is promoted by using ‘black soap’ which is made of olives and eucalyptus. We found the one below on sale at Amazon for ÂŁ19.97 with an exfoliating glove and a 100% pure cold pressed Argan oil to soothe the skin afterwards.

a rel=”nofollow” href=”https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00H93NJLS/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=B00H93NJLS&linkCode=as2&tag=wwwelixirnews-21″>

I tried two difference massages – the Tonique (30 mins, 400 MAD/ÂŁ32) and the well-being (60 mins, 600 MAD/ÂŁ50).  The Hamman Royal in which I was scrubbed with the black soap…and a naked from the waist up lady who threw buckets of water over me. (60 mins, 400 MAD)

There were two huge pools at this hotel – one with a DJ blasting music all day and another quieter one, plus an indoor pool.  I ate outside of the hotel aside from one breakfast which was ordinary.

es-saadi

5* Es Saadi Marrakech resort has private villas and pools

I really did not see that much of Marrakesh, but know I would like to go back to learn more about the culture and people.  There are the mountains for one, where you can trek by foot or camel or jeep caravan as well as hot-air ballooning and a nearby lake for water sports.

Morocco is currently great value for money and if security worries you – as it did me when I went – I felt very safe. All the hotels and public buildings have security screening, there are plenty of police and the taxi drivers mostly all speak English.  And if you don’t know you way around they will come and pick you up from the same place they left you as they all have mobiles!

Here is a selection of very beautiful Marrakesh hotels which are all currently on special discounted offers:

New drug dissolves arterial plaque – a major cause of heart disease

An injectable drug, Repatha, has been shown to dissolve damaging arterial plaques in a new patient trial.

Plaque deposits are responsible for clogging up arteries and contribute to blood clots – a major cause of heart attacks. Clots block the blood supply to the heart, leaving the crucial cardiac muscles starved of oxygen. Therefore treatments which can stop or reverse the build up of atheromas, cut heart attack risk and save lives.
heart
Data from a trial of 968 patients, was unveiled at the recent American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions meeting in New Orleans, and showed that 64% of those treated with both Repatha and statins saw their atheromas shrink over 18 months.

But of the statins group only 48% experienced shrinkage and to a far smaller degree. Whereas the average patient treated with Repatha had a shrinkringe of plaque of 5.8 cubic mm, more than six times more than the 0.9 cubic mm shrinkage seen among those treated with statins alone.

Researcher Dr Stephen Nicholls, of the University of Adelaide, said the plaque reversal was ‘really quite profound’ – and was more than enough to stop a heart attack.

‘It is the difference in disease progression between those who have an event and those who don’t,’ he told the meeting.

Coronary heart disease, in which the major arteries become clogged, affects more than 2.3million people in Britain, and 69,000 die from heart attacks every year.

US company Amgen which makes the drug hopes that an even larger trial which completes next year , of nearly 30,000 people, will prove that the medicine does stop heart attacks.

Repatha is already available in the UK on the NHS and an estimated 325,000 people in the UK are already eligible to be prescribed it. That approval was made on the basis of trials which showed they reduced cholesterol by about 60 per cent more than statins.

Repatha is one of the first new cholesterol treatments developed since statins launched some 30 years ago – offer the first real alternative for people who cannot cope with the brutal muscle aches that sometimes accompany statins, or for whom statins simply do not work.

They have been approved in the UK for two main groups – those with a genetic condition which means they have dangerously high cholesterol, and people with heart disease who cannot cope with the side effects of statins.

But the new findings suggest the drugs could benefit hundreds of thousands more people – with up to 1.5million people potentially benefitting if the guidelines are changed.

The researchers, led by the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, found patients were still seeing their plaques shrink even when their cholesterol levels had reached very low levels – about a tenth of the level at which British patients are eligible for the drug.

Repatha, which is also known as evolocumab has so far been given to only handfuls of NHS patients, mostly because the of the cost. It costs about ÂŁ4,400 per patient per year, although the NHS has agreed an undisclosed discount on this price.

Statins are incredibly cheap in comparison, costing the NHS about ÂŁ20 a year per patient.

But doctors are more likely to start prescribing the drugs based on the new findings, which show for the first time that it has a clinical effect that extends beyond simply lowering cholesterol.

Dementia becomes main cause of death in UK, latest figures reveal

Dementia is now the leading cause of death in England and Wales, new figures from the UK’s Office of National Statistics reveal.

The neurological disorder has now overtaken coronary heart disease at the top of the table. It was the cause of 61,686 deaths registered in 2015, equivalent to 11.6 per cent of the total figure. The new ONS data also shows women are more susceptible to the deadly disease than men. This may be because women are living longer than men – with the risk of developing dementia increasing with age.

dementia-stats-office-of-national-statistics
Dementia killed more than twice the amount of women than men, with 41,283 losing their lives as a result of the disease, new figures show.

Its recognised that over-65s are most at risk from the disease as a result of their increased blood pressure and changes in the immune system. But records of the growing mortality rates of dementia may be because doctors are better at diagnosing the disease. The figures show that killed more than twice the amount of women than men, with 41,283 losing their lives as a result of the disease.

Elizabeth McLaren, head of life event statistics at ONS, said: ‘In 2015, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease became the leading cause of death in part because people are simply living longer but also because of improved detection and diagnosis.’

However, coronary heart disease, which has been at the top of the death table since the new figures began in 2011, was the leading cause of death in males.Figures show 36,731 men fell victim to the planet’s biggest killer – but no longer England and Wales’, which is caused by smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. While 20,403 men died as a result of having dementia. Death rates from dementia have more than doubled over the last five years due to people living longer than ever before and developing the condition.

Despite the latest figures, coronary heart disease is still believed to be responsible for more than seven million global deaths yearly. It was also found to be behind 11.5 per cent of the total 529,655 deaths.

But the new figures show a large variation among age groups as people over 80 were most likely to die from dementia and Alzheimer’s.

While suicide was the leading cause of deaths for adults younger than 35. Meanwhile, breast cancer remains the leading cause of death for women aged between 35 and 49.

The statistics also found that when all forms of cancer are grouped together, it was the most common form of death – responsible for 27.9 per cent of all cases, with irculatory disease, such as heart disease and strokes were responsible for 26.2 per cent.

However, the nation’s previous leading killer, coronary heart disease, was still responsible for killing most males, nearly double that of dementia

Warning – Coty’s Lancaster Tan Maximizer stains everything and you can’t remove most of it!

On the plane back from a recent holiday in Marrakesh – and likely the last of the summer as it was in September – I was pleased to see in the Easyjet onboard store a Tan Maximizer by Lancaster (Coty). It cost ÂŁ22 which is ÂŁ7 cheaper than it is in Selfridges for example.

I also noted that it claimed to be an aftersun moisturiser with no mention of any ingredient that morphed into something brown and streaky. It would not turn me orange and leave stains on my lingerie, clothes, bed linen and furniture – but I was wrong. There is absolutely no warning on the 125ml squeezy bottle and/or packaging about any potential to stain and damage…It merely claims or gives the impression that it is an after-sun moisturiser with the ability to prolong a tan by conditioning the skin.

The build up of the stain was subtle…and happened over a period of weeks. But it has left my expensive ivory leather sofa tinged with a Flamingo pink from contact with my legs. It has also stained my bed linen, my lingerie ….and also my bathroom toilet seat. The latter is the only one I have been able to remove the colour because I was able to use bleach. But this stuff is still coming off even though I have not used this product for weeks since noticing this problem.
ivory-leather-sofa-stained-by-coty-lancaster-tan-maximizer

This is not a new product and I am not sure how long it has been around but someone must have tested it? Did no one notice that this cream stains? At least with a warning you have the choice to buy it or not and also to take action to protect clothing and furniture….

Subtle aesthetic treatments with big impact – Elixir tries the latest

As we age it goes without saying that we will lose the fresh bloom of youth.  But that does not mean we have to let everything fall apart and then blame it on age and the inevitability of it all. That goes for looking after our general health with adequate amounts of exercise, a healthy diet and a fulfilling social life. This will help ensure that we not only look as good as we can for our age but also feel good.

But we must be kind to ourselves for not always doing what we should given the hectic pace of life in today’s multi-tasking digital global world! So what can you do when you look in the mirror and you have to admit you are looking a little world-weary? Well my advice is that you should not do anything extreme – that you may regret in a few years time. You only have to look around Harley Street – at some of the anti-ageing doctors themselves and the celebrity tabloids, to see  the results of this unrealistic obsession with youth.  Going under the knife is almost always an irreversible mistake where the unique beauty of a face and a personality is gone forever.

I am not against minimalist surgery – a little tweak here and there which can be undetectable.  But nowadays there is a lot you do instead. I am a fan of non-invasive techniques that can do a lot to restore skin quality, particularly of the face.  So what did I do a few months ago when I looked in the mirror and felt it was time to do something to give my skin a boost?

I turned to the experts who also favour minimalist non-invasive treatments and can demonstrate good results.

One of those is Dr Elizabeth Dancy of the Bijoux Medi Spa in Belgravia.  Elizabeth was one of the founders of aesthetic rejuvenation treatments in the UK when she introduced mesotherapy – the vitamin-boosting skin injections favoured by Continental ladies.

dr-elisabeth-dancey

Dr Elizabeth Dancy of the Bijoux Medi Spa in Belgravia, London

A few years ago I tried Dermaroller when it first launched at her clinic  – this is a roller which delivers multi-punctures to the skin without making it bleed but damages the collagen, thereby encouraging it to repair and produce newer and younger skin. The skin goes a little red and it’s a bit painful I recall but this is gone by the following day and the process of renewal takes place over the next few weeks.

I really liked this treatment because the skin quality improves and any droop around the jowels lifts a little or a lot depending on age and lifestyle. But you do have to be realistic about what can be achieved.

My experience of this treatment was around five years ago as I am reminded by Faye Parke when I visit Bijoux to experience the latest form of this micro-needling treatment – eDermastamp.  This costs ÂŁ360 for an area such as the face.  First of all a powerful topical numbing cream is applied 45 minutes before the treatment.

Electronic micro-needling is 50 times more effective than Dermeroller and suitable for most people.  After the numbing cream is removed the eDermastamp treatment begins. Faye uses a  small tip containing around  6 needles which penetrate 1.5mm into the skin causing minor trauma which stimulates what is known as ‘a blood red spot reaction”.  It all happens very quickly which I think makes it less painful

To get an even better results hyaluronic acid is applied to the skin – this optimises results by refreshing and plumping the skin.  The skin is only worked over once with the needle penetrating 50 times in each motion. As I’ve said this treatment is not without discomfort but on a scale of 1 to 10 Iwould say it was around 3 and I am sensitive. My skin was a little red and felt a bit hot but that was easily toned downwith a gel and some mineral make-up.

You can watch what happens in this video.

This is a treatment that I rave about if anyone asks me for a great anti-ageing result.  Clearly it’s better to start this kind of thing when skin just starts to look a bit tired – and that can happen to some people earlier than others, particularly if they smoke and take too much sun.  The results are immediate and carry on for months.  A course of three treatments is recommended every few years.

In my case it lifted my face overall and got rid of some fine lines which has started so I will be back for some more!

Another real results treatment is ULTRAcel which combines three different technologies to target ageing in three different levels of the skin. It can be used on the face and the body. The company also have evidence that it works from clinical trials so no photoshopped images here!

I had my treatment at the Rita Rakus Clinic in Knightsbridge. Donna Ofsofke, a technical expert in this technology, who works for ULTRAcel, carried out my treatment

She has a great ‘bedside manner’ and put me at ease.  I was a bit nervous as many years ago I had tried a laser treatment which had made by face feel and look as if it can been in a nuclear blast.  And to literally add insult to injury my skin looked no better than it did before.

ULTRAcel is the first non-invasive treatment to combine these three technologies in one to safely target all skin layers.  It happens in one simple procedure without any downtime, and its suitable for all skin-types and tones.

ultracel

ULTRAcel works by harnessing three different anti-ageing technologies in one machine to rejuvenate the skin

The three technologies are radio frequency for the upper dermis, radio frequency micro-needling for the dermis and high intensity focused ultrasound for the SMAS – this are the muscles that are usually tightened by surgery in a full-facelift. They can be used along or in combination to achieve short and long-term results.

Find out more on this video:

Prior to the treatment a patient fills in an extensive medical questionnaire to verify their suitability for treatment. You may develop cold sores, for example, as it tends to trigger them in some people.

Donna carried out the radio frequency treatment first.  This causes an immediate lift and is warming and pleasant. The ultra-sound which penetrates down to the SMAS is a little more painful. This is caused by the ultrasound energy penetrating deep below the surface of the skin and is a temporary positive sign that the collagen-building process has been initiated – I am told!

In my case I felt as I had been slapped for about a week afterwards but it was ony a dull ache. The anti-ageing effect is seen right away but the impact of the ultra-sound continues for 2 months after with people remarking on the firmness of my skin.

The general downward droop of my face, particularly my chin and neck, was reversed immediately and I looked fresher and younger. As I left the Hans Crescent clinic more than happy about what I had experienced.

The treatment starts from ÂŁ795. This may seem expensive but its a lot cheaper and safer than a facelift. There is a list of clinics providing this treatment on the ULTRAcell website

Paris House – Bedfordshire’s only Michelin-starred restaurant – review

by Avril O’Connor

Bedfordshire’s only Michelin star restaurant is tucked  away in a corner of England’s finest countryside, within a beautiful piece of parkland on the Woburn Abbey estate. It’s barely sign-posted on the A4012 so I miss the entrance and end up a few miles down the road  in quaint Woburn village. I know this area well or used to as I took my apprenticeship as a journalist on a fast-paced evening newspaper here. So I turn round and retrace my steps, spot a tiny sign on the grass verge and drive through one of the magnificent arches to a non-public part of Woburn Abbey.

Paris House External

It’s one of those quintessential summer days – the greenest of green grass, scattered with wild flowers and grazing deer in the parkland nearby – and the sound of cooing pigeons. Then I see the restaurant which is in a faux Tudor style building. It was originally built in 1872 for an international exhibition in Paris, ‘Rue des Nations.’ Its journey over to the UK started when the 9th Duke of Bedford fell for the building and had it shipped wall by wall, beam by beam over to Bedfordshire; residing as Paris House. Over its time the Tudor inspired building has had links with royalty, been transformed into a wartime hospital and now, as it can be found today, is the only Michelin starred restaurant in Bedfordshire owned and run by Executive Chef Owner, Phil Fanning.

In front of the restaurant I spot two Aston Martin cars and wonder why people are gathering round to inspect them. Aston Martin’s factory – where the cars are still hand built is only up the road at Newport Pagnell. I recall (many moon’s ago) writing a story about the then Duke of Bedford – and his wife buying him an Aston Martin Lagonda with her Diner’s Club card for his birthday. It was not something us ordinary folk did in those days so it made headlines.

It turns out that the restaurant thought it would be a nice touch for diners that day to see the cars. One – an Aston Martin DB5 was driven by Sean Connery in Goldfinger and I am told by the man from Aston Martin is worth several thousand pounds more than the newer Aston Martin BD9 (pictured below). I get to try it and ask how much it costs – a mere ÂŁ150,000 and a minimum deposit of ÂŁ15,000 would secure it – but I tell the salesman from Aston Martin I am not ready to live in a caravan just yet …

Aston Martin

Aston Martin DB9 hits 60mph in little more than 3 seconds

For my culinary experience I join the Chef’s Table – which is something very special. Patron and chef Phil Fanning runs a tight and efficient ship. There is no swearing and drama in his kitchen! The mostly very young cooks silently work like clockwork putting together a menu that is culinary art at its finest – and at speed without bumping into each other in a relatively modest-sized kitchen.

The menu were are sampling  is one of the summer tasting menus paired with wines and special vodka from Maison William Chase. Ours was similar to the one below but that day Iberico Pig Cheek was replaced by Ham, Egg & Chips.

The portions resemble those of the once trendy Cuisine Mincer.  Every one of the courses is presented like a work of art – so very beautiful as you can see from the images below. Our French sommelier explains to us the wine pairings.  I am not a lover of strong spirits or fortified wines such as Port but the ones we tried were perfect with the dishes.

The ingredients are fresh and seasonal – some from the garden behind the restaurant – so menus are subject to change.

If only I had a chef like this at home…I sighed.  A feast for the eyes but without the calories!

A wonderful experience and day.  Booking is essential at this restaurant – unless of course you have your own helicopter which can be accommodated so I am told.

The cost of of this particular gourmet experience was (at the time of writing) is  around around £79 per person with extra for the wines.

Former jet-setting stewardess Katy Hull on why you should love your skin

Katy

Former Virgin Atlantic stewardess Katy pictured ten years ago when her skin problems started.

In her first blog for Elixir – Treat the Skin You’re In – Katy Hall reveals why she has a passion for helping people solve their skin concerns.

Hello and welcome. I’m Katy Hull and anti-aging is my passion! I get so much satisfaction and joy from helping people with their skin concerns, studying skin health, nutrition, skincare ingredients, supplements and basically anything that contributes to us feeling and looking like the best version of ourselves!
However, it wasn’t always this way. Rewind several years and I was far from a skin angel. I was a long haul Air Stewardess for Virgin Atlantic, travelling the globe. I had a great deal of fun and experiences I will treasure forever, but the lifestyle I led took its toll on my skin. In truth, it probably wasn’t just the lifestyle because had I been more educated beyond ‘cleansing and moisturising’ then my skin may not have ended up in the awful state it did.
A love of sunbathing – with not enough regard to a high SPF cream, and a love of partying, combined with night flights, a lack of sleep, dehydration from flying and an erratic diet did not make for skin that glowed like a goddess. My skin was prematurely ageing and it seemed to happen overnight! If you saw pictures of me from that time it probably wouldn’t even be apparent.

The worst damage was lurking deep down in the skin, not visible to the naked eye and unbeknown to me at the time. It’s pretty amazing what makeup can do…. although it can’t hide lines and wrinkles. My uneven and dull skin tone was well covered and makeup with a glow gave me a false radiance. Barefaced, I was starting to lack confidence in myself and was beginning to realise the error of my ways.
It was a UV skin scan that revealed the extent of the damage. It wasn’t pretty and a very hard pill to swallow. Sent away from the clinic with around £400 of products and some big promises – that didn’t deliver. My journey of discovery with regards to skin health began. After jumping from skincare brand to brand (never satisfied with results). I eventually found my skincare holy grail that I’m fiercely loyal to – it changed my life and transformed my skin!

mirror

I got educated on skin health – I gained a level 4 qualification in Advanced Skin Science. I studied skincare ingredients and all of the things that make up a part of the jigsaw that is skin health – It’s more complex than simply using an amazing serum! My education is a continuous journey that I’m dedicated to, so that I can help more people with their skin. Eventually I set up my online business treattheskinyourein.com. If you’d like to read my more detailed story of why I set up my business, you can read about it here.

My philosophy is very simple – ‘Treat the skin you’re in’.It’s about being kind to yourself. Listening to your body and your skin, and respecting it. Our skin is a living organ that deserves to be treated with care and respect, and if you treat it that way you’ll have your goddess glow!
With regards to the skincare products I love and believe in. They’re clean (no chemical nasties) and packed with very effective active ingredients that really pack a punch in rejuvenating the skin. Combined with some simple beauty rules that I apply to my own life – they help to support the products in working to their optimum. I believe skin can be improved, transformed and be healthy and more youthful looking. Who doesn’t want that?

My aim with this blog going forward is to share whatever knowledge, experiences and tips that I think will be beneficial to you in some way. It might be a supplement that I’m feeling the benefit of. It might be a skincare ingredient I absolutely love! Or a smoothie recipe that is total skin food…. I will only ever share information about products that I use myself and absolutely love and believe in! That way you know you’re getting a genuine experience and opinion.

So on that note I’ll say goodbye and I’ll be back soon with some anti-aging tips!

Madeira – a perfect place for social butterflies to re-energise

Featured

by Avril O’Connor

Butterflies in December, hillsides bursting with the brilliant red flowers of the poinsetta tree and sunshine so warm that you can sit outside and soak it up until early evening. That is Madeira in winter…the Portuguese island of wood…a tiny exotic paradise on the furthermost western edge of Europe…where there is something for everyone, from shopping, to fine dining or getting away from it all on a mountainside – on a short or long break.

Indian Red Admiral Butterfly

The Indian Red Admiral Butterfly

It’s my first visit and I see how green the island is, compared to its nearest neighbour, Gran Canaria, more than 200 miles to the south. This is because it is massaged by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, giving it a year-round Mediterranean climate, with an average temperature above 65 degrees. The island is very mountainous which makes for a high annual rainful and lots of micro-climates. But even in December there are an abundance of flowers, butterflies, bees and birds.

Poinsetta

Poinsetta trees grow on hillsides all over the island

In winter there are bursts of rain, then the mists evaporate and the sun comes out. At one point at lunchtime it was so hot that we had to move into the shade…

The island is the second wealthiest part of Portugal after Lisbon and that’s because of tourism, contributing to 20% of the island’s GDP. Most visitors come from the mainland, followed by Brits, Scandinavians and Germans.

The capital Funchal may be very built up but is still a rather elegant city with cobbled streets and cafes, and is the best choice for a first-time visitor since it has a range of hotels to suit every pocket. And its easy to get anywhere else on the island from there.

Madeira is a top destination for hikers and nature lovers, but its also a great for clubbers and fine dining and wining. In particular, you can find your very own refuge for some real peace and quite among the many inlets around the rocky coast.

Hotels to suit every taste and budget

Hotels go from the glamorous Reids Palace Hotel, set on a cliff overhanging the sea, to the boutique and quirky Hotel The Vine, to the five star Quintinha SĂŁo JoĂŁo where the owners aim for “a home-from-home” experience.

Quintinha SĂŁo JoĂŁo 5* Spa Hotel

Quintinha SĂŁo JoĂŁo is an intimate family-run 40-room hotel, set amidst sub-tropical gardens in a residential area, just 15 minutes walking from Funchal city centre. It has everything you as an individual or a family might want for a relaxing holiday.

The lush green gardens are a perfect place sink back in a comfy lounger, read a book and listen to the birds, with a cocktail near to hand. And you are more than likely than not to be the only one there.

There is an excellent spa with a sauna, jacuzzi, hammam and a wet area with scottish, tropical and vichy showers. There is also a small gym and indoor (rooftop) and outdoor pools.

Quintinha de sao joa Hotel pool

The owner and manager Andre Barreto is enthusiastic about the personal service his hotel offers. His wife runs a nearby pharmacy which is very helpful for any small needs you might have healthwise – and staff will go for you at no extra cost. And the Portguese love of family means that his two lovely young children are in evidence occasionally.

The hotel has a regular clientele who return year-after-year because of the excellent facilities and friendly service.

Hotel The Vine 5* – World Leading Design Hotel

Hotel The Vine

The elegant UVA restaurant at boutique Hotel The Vine has a view of the port. Unique design features mean that it has been awarded the accolade of World Leading Design Hotel

Adjacent to the hotel lobby and reception, is the Terra Lounge, with its earthy brown tones and creative design which aims to place you in the heart of a Madeiran vineyard. An ideal place to relax at the end of a busy day, or for throwing a party to commemorate a special occasion. Terra Lounge is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as having an all day dining menu and dedicated children’s menu.

Madeira’s top Ayurveda centre

The Centro de Cura Ayurvedica is at the “Refugio dos Sonhos” meaning “refuge of dreams” in Portuguese. The refuge is part of the Hotel Alpina Atlantica. Here you can receive Ayurveda treatments in a 4-star resort facility situated directly on the seafront on top of a small cliff.

Ayurveda centre

The sea-facing rooms at the Refugio dos Sonhos

The centre was founded and is under the management of Birgit Moukom, a German ayurveda specialist .Treatments and therapies here are aimed at patients with general stress symptoms, burnout and diagnosed depression who are seeking healing.

The retreat has special regimes for pain release treatments, weight reduction and insomnia.

The hotel offers full board with Ayurvedic dishes using regional and fresh produce. Meals are served in the garden restaurant but can also be served in the room.

Daily hatha and ashtanga yoga classes are available alongside private sessions and for those wanting to learn the Chinese healing movements of Qigong. Meditation classes also take place.

Ayurveda is the focus here. But the Hotel Alpino Atlantico and the associated hotels Galomar and Galosol provide all the amenities and luxuries of a resort hotel including indoor and outdoor, sweet and salt water swimming pools, saunas, fitness centers and spa.

Rooms in the two-storey Hotel Alpino Atlantico, where most of the Ayurveda guests check in, are comfortable and well equipped with balconies, view of the Atlantic, TV, Phone, hairdryer, and water boiler.

We sample a yoga lesson and a very relaxing Abhyanga full body massage and stay for lunch on the terrace, where a wonderful ‘lasagne’ made with sliced mango was served.

A tasty Ayurvedic lunch – including mango lasagne and sliced baked potatoes

The centre has its own Ayurvedic doctor, Ram Mani Bhandari, and a full consultation with him is very thorough and can take more than an hour. He makes various dietary and other lifestyle recommendations.

The Spa at the Melia Resort 5*

Melia Resport and Spa

The Malo Clinic Spa at the Melia is one of the best on the island – it also allows non-resident use of the spa and gym

The hotel is on the edge of the sea and there are truly lovely views from the outdoor pool,

The spa is unique on the island, partly because of its size and also because of the variety of treatments on offer.

It’s a tranquil place for those wanting peace and quiet. There is an Aqua area, with sauna, hamman, tanks contrast, Thalassotherapy, Jacuzzi and hydromassage, Vichy shower, Rain shower (Cromotherapy), and traditional Swiss shower.

There are nine rooms for aesthetics treatments, massage therapy and relaxation and a beauty and hairdressing salon The Spa also includes a Fitness Club with equipment and weights Cardiofitness free to all guests. There is also a lounge with a Juice Bar and a small library.

We try the MALO Sensations, the signature massage, which is performed with sensory pindas (linen containing heated in spices), that are placed over the body. The massage is aimed at relieving stress and rebalancing the body. During the treatment you are wrapped in a warm cocoon to have a snooze. It was a great treatment and very relaxing.

Touring Funchal

If you are not going to be there for long, you should try a guided tour by electric car. Tukxi Tours which run from 9am until 7pm has a range of options starting at 20 – we go for the 1hour and 15 minute tour that takes in the old town, the Socorro View Point, the Town Hall Square, Municipal Garden and the Santa Catarina Park. That also saves on the foot slogging as Funchal is very hilly. We go up and up and once at the top we can see a vista of the city below, including the large port where a huge ocean liner is docked. Our driver points out key landmarks.

One is the ochre yellow painted17th century Forte de Sao Tiago that was used to protect the Funchal from invasion.

forte restaurant funchal

The 17th century fort overlooks the ocean and has a fine dining restaurant

The fort, which is next to the old town has small watchtowers and sentinel boxes. The fort is open for the public and has some amazing views from its towers and courtyards. It is now a museum, that has undergone some renovation and now houses several museums including the Military Museum of Madeira and the Museum of Contemporary Art, a collection of work acquired and donated by the artists themselves.

It also has an excellent restaurant, one of the best in Madeira. We dine there later. And the fixed price menu is perfect with pate-filled mushrooms, followed by grilled sea bass and a passion fruit pie desert.

Also not to be missed is the cable car which you can take a return ride on (Costs €15 for a return and €10 for a single ride). But many tourists opt for the decent in a wicker sledge. These two-seater vehicles are made in wood and wicker and date back to 1850, when local merchants used them to get from Monte to Funchal. Today its a unique thrill, costing about €24, where two men, called carreiros, glide the sledge downhill, in between the car traffic, controlling it with their feet.

Toboggan

The wicker basket goes downhill from Monte, weaving inbetween the motor car traffic – but no-one seems to mind!

Hiking and walking

The many mountain trails and walks are along the levadas, water canals built to take water from the north of the island to the dryer south. Many are 600-years-old and in otherwise inaccessible places which you can get to by the parallel paths alongside them. There are more than 200 different routes of varying difficulty that you can walk along. There are jeep guides who will take you to these areas where you can get breathtaking views of the island’s natural beauty. Sit and relax with a picnic.

Madeira wine

Madeira is a fortified wine, produced in the Madeira Islands since the 15th century when it was a standard port of call for ships heading to the New World or East Indies. To prevent the wine from spoiling, neutral grape spirits were added. However, wine producers of Madeira discovered, when an unsold shipment of wine returned to the islands after a round trip, that the flavour of the wine had been transformed by exposure to heat and movement.

Madeira wine

Madeira barrels at Blandy’s Wine Lodge in Funchal

Today, Madeira is noted for its unique winemaking process which involves heating the wine and deliberately exposing the wine to some levels of oxidation.

It’s worth a visit to Blandy’s Wine Lodge – the guided tour which costs about €5.50 includes a tasting at the end. You can also get discount vouchers to buy your Madeira in the duty free at the airport on the way home.

Friday night is Poncha night

Poncha is a traditional alcoholic drink from the island of Madeira, made with Aguardente de cana, alcohol made from sugar cane juice, with honey, lemon rind and with different fruit juices, but traditionally lemon juice is used.

The best time to try this is on a Friday in the old town, in the Venda Velha area, when its party time for the local students.

PonchaLocals say that Poncha cures the common cold and people are encouraged to drink it if they have cold like symptoms. It’s also more than possible that if you drink enough you won’t actually remember whether you had a cold or not!

More Wining and Dining
Madeira has a wide variety of restaurants, all prices, international and local cuisine. Here are some we sampled:

Riso Restaurant
Riso
Riso is located at the vibrant “Old part of Town” and enjoys a superb situation beside the sea, close to the viewpoint known as the “Barreirinha”, where the pleasure of the food can be appreciated in a contemporary setting designed by the architects Giano Gonçalves and Leo Marote.

One of the best views on the island. And the food is modern with great flavours and presentation

Until now emotional reactions have not been fully investigated.  But a team of researchers from the Netherlands, Austria and Finland, used four different techniques to measure people’s emotional responses, and to find out what emotional effects, if any, eating different yogurt had on people.

Three groups of around24 participants were each given a pair of yogurts to taste, and the four tests were carried out around this activity. The pairs of yogurts were of the same brand and were marketed in the same way, but they had different flavours or fat content.

The four methods used to measure emotional response were:

1. Face reading during consumption
2. A new emotive projection test (EPT)
3. An autobiographical reaction time test based on mood congruency
4. Eye tracking to measure the impact of the packaging.

EPT was used to determine the effect of different yogurts on people’s moods. Participants were shown photographs of other people and asked them to rate the people in the photographs on six positive and six negative traits before and after eating the yogurt. The idea is that people project their emotions onto others, thus giving an indication of their own mood.

The eye-tracking test aims to characterize gazing behaviour and visual attraction of stimuli, and was used to evaluate the food packaging. Gazing behaviour can be influenced by emotional reactions, but the results of the eye-tracking measurements are not able to describe emotion states.

Comparing eye-tracking measurements before and after eating the yogurt showed the effects of familiarity but not necessarily emotion.

The team found that that liking or being familiar with a product had no effect on a person’s emotion. What did affect the emotions was changes in attitude to the food after tasting it. Being pleasantly surprised or disappointed about the food appears to influence people’s moods.

Positive response to low-fat yogurts
The team also looked at the sensory effect of the yogurts. There was no difference in the emotional responses to strawberry versus pineapple yogurts, but low-fat versions led to more positive emotional responses.

Most strikingly, vanilla yogurt elicited a strong positive emotional response, supporting previous evidence that a subtle vanilla scent in places like hospital waiting rooms can reduce aggression and encourage relationships among patients and between patients and staff.

The team found that eating vanilla yogurts made people feel happy and that yogurts with lower fat content gave people a stronger positive emotional response.

They also found that even if people reported differences in liking them, yogurts with different fruits did not show much difference in their emotional effect.

Lead author of the study, Dr. Jozina Mojet from the Netherlands, said: “This kind of information could be very valuable to product manufacturers, giving them a glimpse into how we subconsciously respond to a product. We were surprised to find that by measuring emotions, we could get information about products independent from whether people like them.”

Win one of 15 anti-cold sore kits from Herpatch

Win a cold sore remedy bundle, worth more than ÂŁ12 from the experts at Herpatch

The clocks have gone back and the darker winter days are here. A lack of sunshine, fatigue, stress and cold/flu symptoms are just a few of the common triggers for cold sores.

But many people don’t realise exposure to cold temperatures can re-activate the HSV-1 virus responsible for cold sores. Exposure to harsh weather or going from extreme temperatures such as a warm house to the cold outdoors may also trigger a cold sore outbreak.

While the virus itself can’t be cured, the amount of outbreaks can now finally be controlled with the launch of a pioneering new balm that’s available in Boots stores nationwide and online at Boots.com.

Herpatch Prevention Stick

Classified as a medical device, the Herpatch prevention stick is a moisturising balm that effectively helps to prevent cold sore blisters. Developed with Protective Nutritive Shield technology to block the triggers that could lead to a cold sore outbreak, the balm combines a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF30), Zinc, Aloe Vera, and other skin protectants to keep lips hydrated and safeguarded from an embarrassing blister occurring.

With its carefully selected ingredients, the Herpatch prevention stick literally provides a barrier to guard sensitive skin from the external factors that could spark a cold sore; including central heating, air conditioning, wind burn, and extreme weather conditions. The softening and moisturising action of the balm alsohelps to soothe skin during an outbreak, keeping the lesion moist to prevent cracking and reduce the occurrence of secondary infection.

In addition to this high SPF, Herpatch prevention stick contains several functional ingredients, such as Zinc, Aloe Vera, and other skin protectants, which will help to prevent recurrent Herpes labials (the medical name for oral herpes).

When applied regularly (the Herpatch prevention stick can be applied as frequently as necessary), the balm will effectively help to reduce the number of cold sore outbreaks. Handy to carry with you, Herpatch Cold Sore Prevention is an easy to use, fast and efficient treatment for the prevention of cold sores. Use in conjunction with Herpatch Cold Sore Serum during an outbreak for a complete cold sore-care regimen.
Herpatch Serum

Herpatch Serum+ is a clever white serum which forms a thin, transparent
film over the cold sore lesion to protect and isolate the affected skin; simultaneously helping to prevent the spread of the virus and accelerate the healing process.
