Facial plastic surgeon Costas Papageorgiou – from Beverly Hills to London

Costas Papageorgiou has recently set up a facial cosmetic surgery practice in London after a move from Beverly Hills.

In this interview he answers Elixir’s questions on his personal philosophy and ethic around cosmetic surgery:

photo 3

What are your professional qualifications?
I am a UCLA trained Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon specialising in minimally invasive surgical techniques and facial aesthetics.
What is your personal belief (ethic) around cosmetic surgery?
Over the last decade the increasing social acceptance of facial cosmetic surgery has nurtured an unregulated market, where patients are targeted by aggressive business models and questionable approaches. I encourage patients to do extensive research prior to treatment or surgery and I work with each patient to improve and enhance so that changes are subtle rather than dramatic. Don’t forget our face is our identity and our personality which is why it is so special.

At what age do you think men/women should first consider facial surgery?
Changes start to occur in the mid-30s and I believe this is the appropriate age for patients to start adopting minimally invasive interventions to delay the impact of aging in a subtle fashion. I believe in gradual interventions/treatments. Of course genetics have a critical role in our appearance but nowadays we have the ability to enhance our facial features and counteract aging by fusing surgery with technology.

What is the youngest age you would operate facially on someone and why?
I prefer to look at the clinical indication related to each patient. We have to acknowledge that we live in a society obsessed with perfection and beauty and this can certainly push boundaries, but there are situations where facial features and noticeable asymmetries can have a significant impact on the psychology of younger patients. It is best to address these features at an earlier stage before they start affecting their self-confidence and esteem.

The decision has to be balanced and take into consideration several factors related to each patient. Age is definitely not a limit or a risk. The risk relates to who is performing the treatment and based on what criteria.

What is your signature procedure?
Although patients and media love to talk about trends and signature treatments in the cosmetic surgery industry, the truth is there is no singular treatment that can address all the multi-layered changes affecting our face. However, if I have to choose, I favour my eyelid lift which enhances the lost volume in the eye area, combined with a short incision facelift for a naturally rejuvenated face.

If someone does decide they would like to start tweaking – what are the steps and what aesthetics and surgery would you recommend?
Technological innovations and our advanced understanding of facial aging have advanced our ability to counteract aging. I think hyaluronic acid fillers combined with energy based devices like Ultherapy and Silhouette Soft threads are a “soft” way to start enhancing facial features.

In Los Angeles, Hyalu-blepharoplasty is a celebrity favourite of rejuvenating the eyelids by replacing volume and smoothing hollow contours and dark circles without having to rely on surgical blepharoplasty.

What is your best advice in maintaining a youthful face?
Research, patient education, prevention and gradual approaches are my philosophy. Of course genetics have a critical role in our appearance but we have the ability to enhance our facial features and counteract aging by choosing a healthy lifestyle, avoiding sun exposure and above all adopting aesthetic interventions that enhance rather than transform.

Half of couples risk leaving partners without income

Almost half of couples over the age of 40 have failed to make financial arrangements to ensure that their other halves will continue to receive an income on the death of their partner

Nearly 1 in 5 women plan to rely on their partners’ retirement savingsold couple

Just two in five (42 per cent) couples over the age of 40 in the UK have made arrangements to ensure that one partner will continue to receive a retirement income after the other dies, according to new research from Prudential1.
Almost half of couples over the age of 40 have failed to make financial arrangements to make sure that their other halves will continue to receive an income on the death of their partner

Women are most at risk, with nearly one in five (18 per cent) planning to depend entirely on their other halves for their retirement incomes, compared with just two per cent of men.
The insurer’s annual Couples’ Conversations study, which provides insights into the finances of  co-habiting couples over the age of 40, also found that joint retirement planning discussions have declined over the past twelve months.

Nearly half (47 per cent) of couples have never discussed the impact that one partner’s death could have on their current pension arrangements – a 13 per cent increase since last year.

Couples in the North East are the least likely to have made joint retirement arrangements. Almost two thirds of couples (65 per cent) in the region admit to not having made plans to ensure they will continue to receive an income in retirement, should they outlive their partner. Those in the Eastern region are the most savvy when it comes to financial planning, with nearly three quarters (72 per cent) claiming to have some arrangements in place.

Vince Smith-Hughes, retirement income expert at Prudential, said: “When a couple is planning for retirement, it is understandable that they would want to focus on the positives – like what they will use the extra time for.

“However, putting some time aside to discuss sensitive issues, like life after the death of your partner and the financial implications that it might have, is a vital part in ensuring the right financial arrangements are in place for the future. These conversations are especially important for those who are planning to rely on their partners for their retirement income.

“The changes to pensions and how people can access their retirement incomes announced in the Budget in March will provide savers and retirees with more choices. As a result, it has never been more important for couples to discuss their retirement planning arrangements. There is plenty of free information available on this issue from independent organisations such as The Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS), while a consultation with a financial adviser or retirement specialist will help many couples to plan more effectively together for the future.”

The study shows just one in five couples (20 per cent) have shared pension saving arrangements, while 65 per cent have their own individual arrangements. One in ten (11 per cent) have made a will but won’t have any other financial arrangements in place should they find themselves in this unfortunate situation.

Olive leaf drink proven to lower blood pressure

The results of a new research review highlighted by OVIVO, a new antioxidant, Organic Olive Leaf Infusion drink, has revealed that the olive leaf has even higher levels of healthy antioxidants than previously thought.

The new paper reveals the health benefits of the plant compound hydroxytyrosol — one of the most powerful naturally occurring antioxidants known to man. Hydroxytyrosol is found in olives and olive oil, but the highest concentrations occur in the leaf. This is also true of oleuropein, another potent plant compound which also has proven antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammation activity.

Although most olive leaf extracts are standardised to ensure a set level of oleuropein, only one — OVIVO Organic Olive Leaf Infusion with Calendula — works to deliver a dose of hydroxytyrosol.

OVIVO Organic Olive Leaf Infusion also has up to 30 beneficial plant compounds and phytochemicals found in the Mediterranean diet in one handy, concentrated dose.

The research was reviewed on behalf of OVIVO by Dr Pamela Mason, an expert nutritionist and chair of the Government’s Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances (an advisory committee which reviews foodstuffs such foods that are specially formulated for people with medical conditions), who suggests the dynamic duo of hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein may hold the key to many of the health benefits associated with olives and the Mediterranean diet.

A double-blind study found a twice-a-day 500mg dose of olive extract was as effective as an ACE inhibitor at reducing both diastolic and systolic blood pressure, but unlike the prescription-only blood pressure pill, the extract also significantly lowered levels of dangerous triglicerides.

A trial investigating the impact of olive leaf extract on blood sugar control reported a significant improvement in insulin sensitivity after just 12 weeks, while a study in patients with type 2 diabetes found the extract improved insulin levels and reduced HbA1c, a marker associated with a greater risk of diabetes-related complications.
OVIVO Organic
Nutritionist Dr Emma Derbyshire agrees: “The study highlights the advantages olive leaf extract can bring to our health and wellbeing when introduced to our diet. We’ve known about the health benefits of olive oil for a long time but this new research confirms the importance of hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein and their power as an antioxidant.

“EFSA has ruled that olive products must provide a minimum of 5mg of hydroxytyrosol a day to show antioxidant activity and qualify to carry health claims relating to cholesterol benefits, but the Authority warns that some olive oils may be too low in the antioxidant to reach this target.

“The great news is that a 70ml dose of OVIVO Organic Olive Leaf Infusion, an olive leaf extract combined with soothing calendula, provides at least twice this amount — as a readily absorbed drink, for maximum bioavailability.”

OVIVO Co-Founder, Susan White said: “We are so convinced of the health-boosting properties of OVIVO that we are on a mission to spread the word far and wide about this natural route to wellness. We are proud to be supporting on-going research into the compounds of the olive leaf in order to find new ways to extract its natural goodness.”

OVIVO Organic Olive Leaf Infusion delivers hydroxytyrosol — one of nature’s most potent antioxidants — and up to 30 beneficial plant compounds and phytochemicals found in the Mediterranean diet in one handy, concentrated dose.

The no-fuss infusion is made from 100 per cent organic ingredients including freshly picked olive leaves (from Italy), soothing calendula, grape and lemon juice and spring water. All ingredients are non-GM and pesticide free.

Each 500ml bottle delivers seven days of natural wellness in 70ml shots, and because there is no added sugar and only a trace of fat, each dose contains a mere 13kcal.

OVIVO Organic Olive Leaf Infusion can be drunk neat, or mixed with fruit juice of smoothies. For something more sophisticated try mixing four shots of OVIVO with 100ml of elderflower cordial, 700ml of sparkling water and crushed ice. Serve with mint leaves and wedges of lime for a delicious aperitif bursting with antioxidant action.

OVIVO Organic Olive Leaf Infusion is the brainchild of British couple Dom and Susan White who have lived in Italy for 15 years and have two children who were born there. They founded the business in 2011 after hearing stories about the remarkable health benefits of olive leaf infusions and years of experimentation to perfect their infusion process.

They are now on a mission to spread the word about this natural way to wellness and fund further research into the potent plant compounds and phytonutrients which give olive leaf extracts an edge over other antioxidants.

OVIVO Organic Olive Leaf Infusion costs ÂŁ13.99 for seven doses and is available from selected Boots stores, Wholefoods, Holland & Barrett and independent health stores in the UK and Ireland.

Escaping Debt & Poverty – new ebook guide

There’s no point in denying it; tens of millions of people are having their lives ruined by painful debt or poverty. One side-effect of this crippling affliction is the apparent lack of control and inability to stop further decline. Thankfully, philanthropist Tony U S Okwum has the answer, and it’s stupidly simple.

51U71Yfq3ZL._SL250_

Everything is exposed in his new book, ‘Escaping From Debt & Poverty’, which opts for proven everyman strategies instead of official advice from the government and financial controllers who only have their best interests at heart. According to the book, poverty is a mindset and not a circumstance – and anyone now has the ability to finally understand money and its direct relation to life’s purpose.

Synopsis:

This is the right book for the right moment. This is the right book on a mission to change your life. For those who are perpetually in debt and experiencing heavy blows from money, this is the right book for you and for those who want to come out of poverty, this is for you.

Do you want to maximize what’s inside of you? Do you want to see your potential come to light? I strongly believe that this book will reshape and rebuild you to the real person you always wanted to be by overcoming financial debt and poverty.

Your greatest enemy in life is the wrong information that has settled in your subconscious mind which has made you to believe that you can never come out of debt and poverty. And this has almost made you to give up. In this book is the solution to that chronic problem- debt and poverty. The economist won’t educate you better and the government won’t tell you the truth, but this book will always lead you along the right path.

“The truth is that people already have everything they need inside of themselves; the key is to change their mind-sets and thought patterns surrounding money. They have to hate poverty enough to want to change it!” explains Okwum. “So-called professionals won’t be of any help, but my book will. Everything has been heavily tested and is unique as it has the readers’ best interests at heart. There’s nobody else trying to make money or pick up commission. That’s a rare thing these days.”

Continuing, “At the end of the day, it all comes down to control and if people want money to be their master or if they want to make it their servant. If someone’s money controls them, a simple shift in power is all that’s needed. When we change the old the new can come in to replace it, but the two can’t co-exist. The blueprint for doing just that is waiting. Become your own personal entrepreneur; if we all did it, the world would be a richer place.”

Readers agree, leaving positive reviews.

Sonia Andrews comments, “These days when everybody is hard hit financially. And the truth is that people just don’t know how to come out with solution and the government is not making it easier either. They are clueless. This book takes you into the world of financial reality. It’s straight to the point and blunt. This book is something you really need to have as an asset. Debt and poverty is crippling. This book is the real deal. It has highly enlightened and empowered me. Now I’m completely transformed after being trained and educated by this book. I can now recommend this book to anybody of any age. This little book has great power in it that can transform your financial life and affect your potential positively.”

Grass is not always greener in foreign climes, warns Foreign & Commonwealth Office

British nationals planning to retire abroad are being warned to learn more about their destination before moving by the Government’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

With six million British nationals planning to head overseas when they retire[1], the FCO is teaming up with popular TV programme ‘A Place in the Sun’ to urge UK retirees and others considering a move abroad to think long-term and plan thoroughly.

italy

According to ‘A Place in the Sun’, there has been a swing back towards more established destinations since the global downturn, with Spain, Portugal and France proving to be particularly popular – both for buying a second home and full-time relocation. For many, moving to foreign climes to settle down in a place with warmer weather, different scenery and a change in lifestyle is an appealing prospect.

But there are many things to consider to help ensure a smooth transition. Despite the importance of being prepared before heading overseas, a recent survey2 has suggested that only a third of British nationals (32%) believe doing their own research is the most important thing to do before moving. Just one in ten (10%) saw their long-term financial requirements as the most important factor.

FCO

James Duddridge, Minister for Consular Affairs, said: “Moving abroad can be a wonderful experience, but living somewhere new is very different to your average holiday. It’s crucial to think about the future and allow plenty of time to do your research.

“A permanent or semi-permanent move overseas involves many practical and social changes. We would advise British nationals to take their time to research all aspects required for a successful move, such as the laws and customs of your future home country, the long-term financial implications for you and your family, any legal issues requiring independent advice and your current and future health needs. Remember, relocating is about more than bricks and mortar”.

A Place in the Sun

Andy Bridge, Managing Director of A Place in the Sun, said: “It’s no coincidence that people who make the most successful transition abroad are those who are fully prepared and have done their research. Considering long-term financial requirements, learning the local language and seeking independent legal advice are just some of the important things you should think about. The FCO’s moving abroad checklist is a good place to start.’

Carole Hallett Mobbs, editor of ExpatChild.com, moved to South Africa over a year ago and comments: “I speak to British expats frequently, and often people forget simple, everyday steps such as cancelling their water back in the UK, which is a difficult task when you could be thousands of miles away. I would advise those looking to move abroad not to cut all financial ties with their home country when they move. Having a UK bank account left open can prove extremely useful when you discover an outstanding bill or utility needs sorting out, or in case of an emergency.”

Almost half (46%) of the survey respondents who already live abroad said their top piece of advice for those looking to relocate is to be realistic with their expectations. Hallett Mobbs echoes the sentiment: “Successful expats are those who go into their new life with their eyes open, and with a sense of adventure tempered by realism. The grass isn’t greener, it’s just different grass.”

The FCO can

  • Issue you with an emergency travel document
  • Provide information about transferring money
  • Provide help if you have suffered rape or serious sexual or physical assault, are a victim of crime, are ill or in hospital
  • Give you a list of local lawyers, interpreters, doctors or funeral directors
  • Contact you if you are detained abroad
  • Contact friends and family back home for you if you wish
  • Provide help in cases of forced marriage
  • Assist people affected by parental child abduction
  • The FCO cannot:
¡ Help you enter a country if you do not have a valid passport or necessary visas
¡ Give you legal advice or translate documents
¡ Investigate crimes or get you out of prison
¡ Get you better treatment in hospital or prison than is given to local people, but we will raise concerns if treatment falls below internationally recognised standards
¡ Pay any bills or give you money
¡ Make travel arrangements for you

[1] The MGM Advantage Survey, 2014 recently revealed that more than 6 million UK adults are planning to head overseas when they retire

2 Survey conducted by OnePoll in September 2014, from a nationally representative sample of 400 British residents overseas and 600 British nationals of retirement age looking to move overseas.

Bio Oil is a non-comedogenic (acnegenic), hypo-allergenic product that is suitable for use by individuals with sensitive skin.

    Improving the Appearance of Scars

Bio-Oil helps improve the appearance of all scar types. It is also highly effective in helping to maintain the elasticity of scar tissue on joints and other high-mobility areas.

Bio-Oil should be massaged in a circular motion into the scar and surrounding skin, twice daily, for a minimum of 3 months. Younger scars have a greater chance of improvement within a shorter time period, however, older scars will also benefit from the regular use of Bio-Oil. On new scars, Bio-Oil should be applied only once the wound has healed, and should never be used on broken skin.

What is a scar and how is it formed?

Scars are an integral part of the healing process and result from an imbalance in the production of collagen at the wound site. Scars go through numerous changes as they mature, but they are permanent in nature. Bio-Oil is specifically formulated to help improve the appearance of scars, but will never remove them entirely.

Improving the Appearance of Uneven Skin Tone

Bio-Oil helps to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone caused by hormonal fluctuations, skin-lighteners or excessive sun exposure. Visible as dark patches on the face or body, uneven skin tone often becomes most apparent during pregnancy, menopause or after exposure to high volumes of UV light.

Improving the Appearance of Stretch Marks

Bio-Oil is highly effective in helping to improve the appearance of existing stretch marks. Bio-Oil helps to increase the elasticity of the skin, thereby the possibility of new stretch marks forming is reduced.

    Ageing Skin

Sagging and wrinkled skin commonly associated with aging is largely caused by the weakening of the collagen and elastin support system in the dermis. Bio-Oil contains numerous ingredients that help to plasticize the skin, making it softer, smoother and more supple, thereby reducing the appearance of wrinkled and sagging skin. Bio-Oil also moisturizes, which improves the texture, tone and appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

    Dehydrated skin

Bio Oil helps replenish the skin’s natural oils that have been stripped away by factors such as:

    • Frequent bathing/cleansing with harsh soaps
    • Excessive perspiration
    • Atmospheric conditions including exposure to the sun and wind
    • Central heating and air conditioning
    • Poor diet and/or insufficient water intake

The annual survey, analysing attitudes to money and retirement planning among co-habiting couples aged 40 and over, found that nearly four in five couples (79 per cent) have discussed their finances in the last year, but more than half (52 per cent) admit that these conversations haven’t led to them agreeing a target figure for their joint retirement incomes.

    • 4 in 5 couples have discussed their finances in the last year
    • But more than half have failed to turn these conversations into financial plans for the future
    • Nearly 1 in 5 couples don’t even know where their main retirement income will come from

This figure rose to more than two thirds (67 per cent) among couples aged 45 to 54 – the crucial years in the lead-up to retirement.

This failure to turn conversations about money into actual plans for the future is further demonstrated by the fact that although nearly three fifths (61 per cent) of couples over the age of 40 have discussed retirement planning in the last year, one in five (18 per cent) still admit to not knowing where their main source of retirement income will come from.

Even more worrying is the fact that a quarter (25 per cent) of couples over the age of 40 have retirement funds that will only provide an income for life to an individual – rather than to their partners as well.

Prudential’s research took place six months after the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced sweeping changes to pensions, savings and retirement income choices in the 2014 Budget. Three-quarters (74 per cent) of couples over the age of 40 said that they are aware of the changes, and 29 per cent of them have discussed the implications with their partners.

However, despite this apparent awareness of the choices and opportunities now facing savers and retirees, only one in five (20 per cent) couples over the age of 40 say that one or both of them has consulted a financial adviser in the last five years, and only one in 10 (nine per cent) have had a joint meeting with their spouse and a professional adviser or retirement specialist. Meanwhile, the vast majority (70 per cent) of couples have never seen a financial adviser to discuss their retirement plans.

Vince Smith-Hughes, retirement expert at Prudential, commented: “The gulf between those who are aware of retirement issues and recently announced Budget changes, and those who discuss the implications openly with their other halves is alarming. However, simply having conversations about money is not enough. Taking action always needs to be the next step.

“For many couples, the first step to agreeing and securing a target income in retirement should be seeking professional financial advice together. As retirement becomes a more immediate prospect, a professional adviser or retirement specialist can help couples to make the right decisions about generating an income in retirement.

“Independent organisations such as The Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS) provide information free-of-charge to couples who are embarking on those often tricky initial conversations about retirement planning.”

Donna Dawson, psychologist and relationship expert says: “Although money appears to be a straightforward black and white issue about numbers, it is actually a very complex and emotional subject. Money discussions can often lead to disagreements between couples – misunderstandings, sulky silences and angry rows.

“One way to reduce the emotional impact of financial discussions is to write things down, so that the options can be viewed by both partners objectively. Writing down the pros and cons of situations can help to clarify and contextualise the issues. Once couples start to discuss their finances, they should stick with the discussion until they find a solution – calling in a financial adviser if necessary.”

Regular breakfast may protect against diabetes in youngsters

Children who eat breakfast regularly, particularly a high fibre cereal breakfast, had lower risk for type 2 diabetes than those children who ate breakfast infrequently, according to new research

    Wheat 1 copy

The results came from research among 4,116 9–10 year old children attending 200 schools in London, Birmingham, and Leicester participating in the Child Heart and Health Study in England (CHASE), a study examining risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes in children.

Researchers took various body measurements of the study participants and their levels of insulin, glucose, and other blood markers of diabetes risk. All the participants reported how often they ate breakfast and 2,004 children also completed a 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire.

Seventy-four percent of the children reported that they ate breakfast every day, 11% and 9% reported that they ate breakfast most days and some days, respectively, whereas 6% reported that they rarely ate breakfast.

Children who ate breakfast every day had lower risk markers for type 2 diabetes (eg fasting insulin levels were lower) than those children who ate breakfast infrequently. In particular, the children who ate a high fibre, cereal-based breakfast had lower insulin resistance than children who ate other types of breakfast such as low fibre or toast-based breakfasts.

Studies of this type are often associated with confounding factors that can reduce the strength of the findings. However, in this study the association between eating breakfast and having a favorable type 2 diabetes risk profile remained after allowing for differences in socioeconomic status, physical activity levels, and amount of body fat.

Family GP, Dr Paul Stillman and advisor to the Breakfast Cereal Information Service (BCIS) commenting on the results said: “These findings are very encouraging and suggest the need to conduct further trials to see whether altering the breakfast habits of children can alter their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

“This study suggests that if all the children in England who do not eat breakfast daily could be encouraged to do so, it might reduce population-wide fasting insulin levels by about 4%. Moreover, encouraging children to eat a high fibre breakfast, instead of a low fibre breakfast might reduce population-wide fasting insulin levels by 11%–12%. Persuading children to eat breakfast, particularly a high fibre breakfast cereal regularly, could contribute to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Breakfast cereals are a nutritious and convenient choice for breakfast as they contain a range of micronutrients. Choosing a high fibre breakfast cereal may offer additional benefit to health with regard to type 2 diabetes risk profile.”

Coffee helps protect the liver from alcohol abuse

Drinking strong coffee may be good for the liver, scientists in the US have discovered.

Coffee drinkers were found to have lower levels of abnormal liver enzymes that are a sign of damaged liver cells.

    beans

Researchers used information from the US’s National Health and Nutrition Survey to determine their findings.

The team measured the levels of enzymes in blood to determine each participant’s liver function. The enzymes include aminotransferase (ALT), aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma glutamyl transaminase (GGT). Lower levels of these enzymes present in blood is a sign of good liver health.

They are usually present when liver cells are damaged or destroyed, or if the flow of the bile produced by the liver becomes blocked.

The new study included 27,793 participants, aged 20 years or older, who recorded how much coffee they drank in a day.

The scientists concluded that coffee may contain a chemical compound other than caffeine that could protect the liver, which is why decafinated coffee also has protective qualities.

The findings back up a number of previous studies which found that coffee consumption may help lower the risk of developing diabetes, stroke, liver disease, and cirrhosis liver damage.

Participants who reported drinking three or more cups of coffee per day had lower levels of ALT, AST, ALP and GGT compared to those not consuming any coffee.

Researchers also found low levels of these liver enzymes in participants drinking only decaffeinated coffee.
Dr Qian Xiao from the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland said that previous research had already found that  drinking coffee may have a possible protective effect on the liver.  But it was not clear whether drinking decaffeinated coffee also conferred the same effects.

He said:  “Our findings link total and decaffeinated coffee intake to lower liver enzyme levels. These data suggest that ingredients in coffee, other than caffeine, may promote liver health.”
The findings were published in the journal Hepatology, a journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Greek islanders live longer with coffee

Scientists have found that people living on the Greek island of Ikaria enjoy a longer, healthier life span and it may be due to the way they prepare their coffee. Instead of using methods that remove beneficial polyphenols, they boil it in a way that retains its unique compounds.1 Greek islanders who consumed this polyphenol-rich coffee were found to have healthy endothelial function that scientists suggested may play a role in their longevity.1

Among the most beneficial coffee polyphenol is chlorogenic acid, an inhibitor of an enzyme called glucose-6-phosphatase. This enzyme stimulates the excess creation of glucose in the liver, which can result in blood glucoseelevation.

    Organic coffee beans are best

These beneficial antioxidants are more bioavailable in organic coffee. One product is the  Rich RewardsŽ Breakfast Blend Whole Bean Coffee is made using a patented, 100% natural process called HealthyRoastŽ.2 This process delivers a more complete nutritional profile of the coffee bean, yielding up to 87% more chlorogenic acid than conventional coffees.

Handpicked deep in the rainforests of Central America, Rich Rewards® consists exclusively of 100% USDA certified organic arabica coffee beans, gently roasted in small batches—with the polyphenols then added back in to provide optimal health benefits.

    Organic Ground

Ground organic coffee is also available Rich Rewards® Breakfast Blend Ground Coffee—so you can kick-start your day a little faster—in both caffeinated and decaffeinated options. For those who prefer a flavored coffee, Rich Rewards® Breakfast Blend GroundCoffee is available in natural vanilla or mocha flavors. Like our regular Rich Rewards® whole bean and ground coffees, these flavored ground coffees are roasted using the patented HealthyRoast® process—which preserves the special, naturally occurring coffee compounds that soothe (instead of irritate) your stomach.

This unique process also guarantees a higher content of healthy polyphenols.
Life ExtensionÂŽ Rich RewardsÂŽ Breakfast Blend Coffee provides it all:
    • Whole bean savory taste
    • Ground coffee for added convenience—caffeinated or decaffeinated
    • Regular ground coffee taste or two natural-flavored options
    • Far higher percentage of chlorogenic acid than conventional coffees
    • Certified organic
    • Special, naturally occurring compounds that soothe your stomach

Prunes help to combat obesity and curb hunger, new research reveals

Eating a small portion of prunes daily can help weight loss and decrease appetite, according to new findings from the University of Liverpool.

The research also reveals that prunes contain no more sugar than a plum, its fresh fruit equivalent.

The study showed that including a modest portion of prunes as part of a weight loss diet, produced significant changes in body weight and waist size. There was also a trend for the prune eaters to achieve greater weight loss during the last four weeks of the study and long term effects on appetite were also observed.

    CA Dried Plum finals

The researchers concluded that including prunes into weight control diets may be of benefit to long-term success, by tackling hunger and satisfying appetite.

    CA Dried Plum finals

    Natural dried fruits
Dieters have tended to shy away from dried fruits believing them to be higher in sugar than fresh. This perception has been reinforced by the introduction of dried fruits with added sugar, such as cranberries and fruit juice infused dried fruits. But traditional dried fruits, such as prunes, are simply dried plums, with the same natural sugar content as their fresh counterparts and no added sugar. One plum becomes one prune, water removed, so the calorie content remains the same.

Plums beneficial to teeth and gums
Another concern about snacking on dried fruit, is dental health. Cariogenic bacteria utilise sucrose to produce harmful acids and dental plaque, yet sucrose is minimal in prunes (0.15g/100g), the main sugars being fructose and glucose. California prunes also contain 26.5% carbohydrate as non-fermentable sorbitol, which is used widely in chewing gums for its low cariogenicity. Research on prunes is confirming that they contain certain bioactive compounds with antimicrobial properties, capable of inhibiting the growth of bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease

Professor Jason Halford and Dr Jo Harrold, Institute of Psychology, Health and Society, Liverpool University, presented initial results at the 2014 European Congress on Obesity , having assessed the effects of prunes on weight and appetite by studying 100 overweight and obese low fibre consumers – 74 women and 26 men; 43 years; BMI 29.8 in a 12-week study. All subjects received the same standard dietetic weight loss advice, plus the prune intervention group were provided with 140g/d (171g for men) prunes for snacks, whereas the active control group were advised on healthy snacks.

The study showed that including prunes as part of a weight loss intervention, produced significant changes in body weight (1.99kg/2.4%; p<0.000) and waist circumference (2.5cm/2.3%; p<0.000) from baseline. There was a trend for the prune eaters to achieve greater weight loss during the last four weeks of the study and enduring effects on appetite were also observed with AUC (area under the curve) analysis demonstrating increased fullness in the prune group after week 8 (p=0.05). It is worth noting too that study compliance was good and, despite the high daily doses, the prunes were well tolerated. The researchers concluded that including prunes into weight control diets may be of benefit to long-term success, by tackling hunger and satisfying appetite.

No& Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Serum 35-45

The two new serums contain advanced peptides which boost the power of the original product. In tests on real woman 80% who already  used the original products said they saw an even better result from the new serums.

The new advanced serums were tested against the previous best-seller, which sold out after scientists proved it was as good as the best professional skincare.

So what are the key ingredients in the new products?

The new No7 Protect & Perfect ADVANCED Serums contain ingredients that  build on the existing, clinically-proven formulas of the original No7 Protect & Perfect Serums and improve them in order to achieve the maximum effects in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, with ingredients carefully chosen for their ability to repair, enhance and protect the skin.

The new repairing ingredients are specialised peptides. A peptide is a string of amino acids (which are the building blocks of proteins) and in very specific combinations, they have particular functions in the skin.

Boots say that new peptides improve the repairing function of the major ingredient in the original formula Matrixyl 3000 which is now present in increased amounts in the new serum.

Research carried out with The University of Manchester proved that No7’s blend of peptides drives repair of fibrillin in the skin.

The newly added Acetyl di-peptide helps reduce crosslinking in skin, a factor that gives rise to stiffer, less supple skin as it ages. Put together with Matrixyl 3000, it forms a unique peptide blend that stimulates collagen and fibrillin repair in the skin. In total the new combination of Matrixyl 3000 and di-peptide results in more than 30 times the repairing peptide concentration in both of the new No7 Protect & Perfect ADVANCED Serums when compared to the original serums.

In the formula for skins aged 25-35 salicylic acid has been added to helps exfoliate the skin by gently dissolving the bonds that hold old dead skin cells in place on the skin’s surface.

This helps to keep pores clear, resulting in clearer and blemish free skin, important benefits for the younger consumer just getting into anti-ageing.

The new ingredient in the serum for those aged 35-45 is hyaluronic acid, a natural component of the skin, responsible for providing volume or ‘stuffing’ in the skin by helping to bind water into the skin.

Once again Boots has tested its new serums on real woman. The tests were carried out on 373 existing No7 users and revealed that 80% of them saw their best anti-ageing results ever.

No7 Protect & Perfect Advanced Serum used for 3 months shows a real decrease in lines and wrinkles

Britain’s nation of holiday money hoarders

Almost half of us returning from holiday with foreign currency squirrel it away with a plan to use it for the next trip, rather than bother with the hassle of shopping around for the best exchange rates to convert it back into Sterling. This is according to a survey of over 2000 holidaymakers by ICE – International Currency Exchange, the leading travel money provider.

    • Almost 50% of UK travellers hoard holiday money at home
    • 1 in 3 spend it at the airport
    • Only a third bother converting it back to Pounds when they arrive home

    Euros

Taking the pain out of organising currency conversions back into Sterling, the ICE Buy-Back service allows travellers with left over foreign currency, to get an exchange rate quote via text.

According to the ICE survey, 49% of UK travellers come home with currency and do nothing with it. In contrast, only 3% give unspent local currency to charity, whilst 12% use it to tip hotel staff**. Just under a third convert their holiday money, when they get home, while the same proportion will fritter it in the airport lounge and gift shops. Only 16% would spend it on gifts for loved ones.

Koko Sarkari, Chief Operating Officer of ICE, says, “Based on the national survey findings, we conducted a poll amongst our customers to find out how much foreign cash they are hoarding – 66% admitted to having over ÂŁ50 worth of foreign currency at home**.”

“If exchange rates were favourable when the currency was first ordered and another trip’s on the cards, you can understand why you wouldn’t rush to convert leftover holiday money back into Sterling. But with almost half of us hoarding foreign cash, the hassle factor probably plays a big part in the decision not to convert it back. At ICE, we completely understand this and that’s why we launched our text based buy-back service, providing a quick quote for any currency we sell – whether the customer ordered it from us or not. This hassle-free service means customers will know exactly what they will get and all they need do is pop in to one of our branches and complete the transaction.

Customers should simply text SELL followed by the amount to 07786 207 053 and ICE will respond with a no obligation quote.
