So the arrival of an all-in-one solution comes in the form of Magic Minerals – a new ‘self-correcting” complexion perfector mineral powder which can help achieve near perfect skin.

We know that getting a flawless complexion isn’t always cheap or easy, especially if you’re battling with blemishes, age spots, fine lines and an uneven skin tone.

The built-in colour correctors hide a range of nasty skin perfections instantly:

  • Pink – Brightens and gives a healthy glow!
  • Mint – Reduced redness and covers breakouts
  • Yellow – Conceals dark circles and uneven skin tone
  • Lavender – Corrects sallow complexions

Curcumin may help repair brains of dementia sufferers

Curcumin, a derivative of the aromatic spice turmeric, may help repair the brains of people with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Curcumin

In recent scientific tests on rats, turmerones – botanical compounds in curcumin that enhance its absorption – promoted the proliferation of brain stem cells and their development into neurons.

It could now help scientists develop treatments for conditions in people in which brain cells are lost, including Alzheimer’s and stroke, according to an article in Stem Cell Research and Therapy.

Lead researcher Dr Adele Rueger, from the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine in Julich, Germany, said: “While several substances have been described to promote stem cell proliferation in the brain, fewer drugs additionally promote the differentiation of stem cells into neurons, which constitutes a major goal in regenerative medicine.”

At certain concentrations, the turmeric compound boosted the proliferation of rat foetal NSCs by up to 80 per cent, and increased the speed at which they matured.

In living rats, injections of aromatic turmerone led to the expansion of two key brain regions, the subventricular zone (SVZ) and hippocampus.

Facts about curcumin

  • One of today’s most promising natural disease-fighting agents is curcumin. Derived from the curry spice turmeric, curcumin has been used for millennia to target disease and promote good health.
  • Most commercially available preparations of curcumin have very poor bioavailability, impairing their ability to confer life-sustaining properties.
  • Scientists have recently discovered a novel curcumin preparation with exceptional bioavailability. In a human study, this advanced curcumin preparation—termed BCM-95®—delivered up to seven times more curcumin to the bloodstream than a standard curcumin product. This increased bioavailability should greatly enhance curcumin’s benefits.
  • Curcumin promotes health by diverse mechanisms. Scientists have documented curcumin’s anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-microbial, neuroprotective, cancer-fighting, and immune-enhancing abilities.
  • Studies suggest that curcumin may help prevent or fight prostate, pancreatic, breast, and colon cancers.
  • Curcumin may help protect the brain against the devastating consequences of stroke and exposure to toxic heavy metals.
  • Individuals who consume more curcumin-rich curry are less likely to experience cognitive decline, suggesting curcumin could help protect the nervous system against aging. In laboratory and animal models, curcumin shows promise in preventing the pathological changes seen in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease sufferers.

Advanced Bio-Curcmin with Ginger & Turmerones contains BCM-95, a patented bioenhanced preparation of curcmin that has been shown to reach up to 7 times higher concentration in the blood that standard curcumin.

Autumn sun danger to eyes warning

With the Autumn sun posing an increased risk to the eyes, National Eye Health Week (NEHW) and Boots Opticians have launched a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of unprotected sun exposure and help prevent future, avoidable, sight loss.

Boots National Eye Health Week

When the sun crossed the celestial equator on the Autumn equinox (23 September 2014 02:29 GMT) the highest point on its trajectory reduced to just 40-degrees. David Cartwright, chair of NEHW explains how this impacts on our eyes: “When the sun is high in the sky our brow bone acts like a built in sun shade and prevents damaging UV light entering the eye. When the sun is low in the sky during Autumn months the total amount of UV radiation your eyes are exposed to increases dramatically.”

Cumulative UV exposure has been found to promote the onset of cataracts(1) and has been implicated in the development of a range of other eye conditions including photokeratitis, pterygium and macular degeneration – the UK’s leading cause of blindness (2).

David continues: “One simple way you can tell if your eyes are in danger of UV damage is to look at your shadow. If your shadow is taller than you, you should protect your eyes using a hat, sunglasses or UV protective lenses.”

To mark National Eye Health Week Boots has a special offer – £10 for an eye check including digital retinal photography – find out more at Boots.com

As part of a wider public health initiative to prevent future avoidable sight loss(3) and highlight the year-round risk of eye damage caused by UV radiation, NEHW has teamed up with Boots Opticians to launch Sunbeams, to encourage schools to include sun safety within their child protection policies. It will also provide teachers with a range of Key Stage 1 learning resources which highlight ten simple strategies for staying safe in the sun and explain how doing things such as having regular sight tests and eating colourful fruit and vegetables can keep your eyes and vision healthy.

Ben Fletcher, Managing Director, Boots Opticians said: “Everyday protection from UV is vital, especially for children, who are more susceptible to eye damage(4). Increasingly evidence shows the eye health risk of UV exposure – even on a cloudy day. We also know that most of our exposure to harmful UV happens before the age of 18 so it’s important to get eyes checked regularly. We hope our Sunbeam characters Ellen and Ravi will encourage kids and parents to take care of young eyes to minimise the risk of future sight loss.”

Children’s doctor and TV medic Dr Ranj is supporting the Sunbeams campaign. To view Dr Ranj’s vlog and for further information about the public health initiative plus children’s games and a host of fun activities visit www.visionmatters.org.uk/sunbeams

Sunbeams’ Ten Simple Strategies for staying safe in the sun

1. Protect your eyes whenever the UV Index rises to three or more(5) – even on a cloudy day. (Over 90% of UV can transmit through the clouds).

For comfort you may also wish to wear eye protection on bright days when the UV Index is below three.

2. Wear sunglasses with a CE; UV 400 or BS standard BSEN1836 : 2005 mark – this ensures they provide adequate UV protection.

3. Never wear toy sunglasses. These offer little UV protection and can actually cause more damage because the tinted lenses dilate the pupil allowing more UV light to enter the eye.

4. If you wear spectacles, check your lenses provide UV protection.

5. Make sure your eyes and area around your eyes is fully covered. Large lenses and wrap-around styles provide the greatest protection.

6. Wear a hat, cap or visor for added protection

7. Sit or play in the shade

8. Stay out of the sun between 12pm and 3pm when the sun’s rays are strongest. Up to 50% of the total daily UV is emitted between these times!(6)

9. Never look directly at the sun, this can permanently scar the retina.

10. Remember the shadow rule…
… If your shadow is taller than you are your eyes are at greatest risk from UV exposure, as your brow bone no longer offers natural protection.

Is shopping the real elixir of life?

I have always been told that I look younger than my real age – and some new research comes my way which clearly reveals why. I love shopping. And it concludes, shopping makes you feel young!

US researchers, at the Oregon State University, interviewed people in their late 80s, their family members and their carers, and discovered that old age seems to officially begin when you…stop shopping!

Great news – so I can carry on then? The study showed that when older people maintain the ability to shop for themselves, and perform other tasks on their own, they are less likely to be viewed and treated as “old.”

So no excuses then to not accept an invitation to the Cannes Shopping Festival on the grounds that I write about healthy ageing! After all you’ve got to keep up the regular shopping habit to stay young – and this is vital information for Elixir’s readers after all.

Shopping Festival
The Palais des Festival in Cannes (above) where the stars walk the red carpet is  the backdrop for the annual Shopping Festival

So I set off for Cannes on a shopping fact-finding-mission with a feeling of mixed emotions. I confess I have been there before – as a showbusiness journalist, working for a national newspaper, and I partially look back in horror, as it was the only time and place I ever wished I was on hard core drugs. So I sank a lot of quality champagne instead…

Nearly decapitated in Cannes

With daily deadlines looming, filmstars and press conferences popping up everywhere, French taxi drivers who let down your car tyres, press attaches who give preference to local old age pensioners to press conferences, nearly being decapitated by paparazzi photographers who spotted me interviewing Bobby from Dallas, foreign journalists who think a scoop is asking Paul Newman about his pasta sauces, escaping the clutches of Hollywood film moguls, the inevitable rain and the only place to buy an umbrella is the Guicci shop – I knew I had to go! After all I may have almost dropped from exhaustion in Cannes but I had never really shopped until I dropped there!

Right from day one it was so deja vu. I am picked up from Nice airport by Palais des Festival chauffeur John who normally drives the stars – gawd if only I had known him when I was a showbiz hack I’d have been up there on the front page!

Cocktails and glamour

My intinerary for this event – which by the way is a public one – is three days of various activities around the theme of shopping: cocktail parties at all the exclusive boutiques I never had the time or money to visit such as Gucci and Ferragamo, catwalk shows at the Palais des Festival, and various trips to local sites of interest and a helicopter trip around the Bay of Cannes and the islands.

There are a mix of journalists here to cover the event. I am the only one from the UK – the rest are mostly Italian fashion journalists from Milan – one did the cookery class with her Guicci handbag on her shoulder.  I grew very fond of them later – when I knew how crazy they were – trying to hug the toy boy models in their boxer shorts and more! Oh and the Russians, one of whom arrived with an empty suitcase and spent all her time rushing into various designer shops to fill it up.

I stay at the Novotel – which is a smart hotel behind the town and where I remember interviewing the lovely and very handsome actor Simon MacCorkindale  – readers may remember him in Manamal. He sadly died of cancer in 2010. But others get to stay at some of the newer boutique hotels that have sprung up around the Rue des Antibes since I was there.

Fashion shows and glamour

So the next few days are a busy round of fashion shows (in the evenings) at the Palais with pre-show drinks at the luxury boutiques not far away in the Croisette – Ferragamo, Azzaro, Georges Rech, Apostrophe and Swarovski. Oh how can I cope?

These are all my favourite designers – not that I can afford the gear when I should be putting money into my pension(boring!). But great fun to role up in a chauffeured limo…until you see the locals which shocked me when I first went to the Cote’d’Azur – those stick thin elderly women with osteoporosis who look young from behind and like Norma from Psycho from the front! Oh and one thing that doesn’t change is the dog (poodle) mess – so watch out for that!

So I take a break and wander along to the Palais – there is now a Hagan Daas ice cream shop right opposite the red carpet. God I hated that red carpet – being a no-one that everyone looked at and said who the f–k is that in French or whatever…and I thought I might fall down the stairs in front of millions of people.

So I took a seat ordered myself a glass of champagne and a scoop of the vanilla with some milk chocolate sauce sat down and wondered about the meyhem that would be taking place in a few days and that luckily I would not be part of. Phew!

First Night Cannes

The highlight of the catwalk shows during my visit was the Ferragamo show – and I don’t have photos of this because cameras were confisgated.

The Festival also showcases new talent and I came away the owner of a very inappropriate dress for a lady of my age – see below (the designer is wearing it).

Shopping in Cannes Fashion Show

Yes – I am the proud owner of the dress on the right (above) which to date I have never worn! I am open to offers – particularly if it matches your yacht in Antibes! It’s backless by the way.

One of the most exciting things I learned about was the food market near the station. Clearly when I had been before I didn’t time to see it. But the fresh food and the variety and quality of it is amazing. There’s another non-food market selling shoes that look like Tod’s for a tenth of the price. I couldn’t resist a pink suede pair for £15!

Cannes Market
Cannes market above has an abundance of  fresh quality vegetables and fruit

The point of the festival is also to show you that it doesn’t have to be expensive to stay in Cannes – there are lots of great hotels that don’t cost the earth and Bed & Breakfast places – the tourist office below the Palais has a list.

And there is a street right behind the expensive Rue de Antibes where you can find great clothes and shoes at regular and bargain prices. During the festival there are also various discounts for Shopping Festival participants.

It’s a great way and time to visit Cannes before the prices get inflated for the Film Festival. This year’s Shopping Festival took place in April. But there’s always next year!

Shoe on Beach

And I have to leave you with this photo above – one of the Italian girls slipped off her very high heels – and they glittered in the sunshine on the beach in April and it was hot, the rose wine was chilling in silver cooler and we watched a fashion show on the beach….bliss.

Should insurance companies ever be allowed to pay doctors to prescribe specific drugs?

In the UK direct advertising for prescription drugs (with the recent exception of the  over-the-counter anti-obesity drug Alli and the statin Zocor) is banned.

This is because no-one is allowed to interfere or influence the doctor-patient relationship that allows the ethical treatment and prescribing of drugs that are optimal for treating the patient/illness. Pharmaceutical companies are also not allowed to send out promotional press releases about their drugs unless its about the outcome of a clinical trial for the same reason.

Of course there is the debacle over the UK government’s, National Institute for Clinical Excellence, which approves drugs for use within the NHS. It has been dubbed “a rationing body” by the media over decisions not to give drugs that could extend life at the earliest intervention in killer diseases such as Alzheimer’s and prostate cancer. The debate over this goes on.

Life Extension magazine October

But I learn of a new threat to our right to claim the best treatment when we need it.  And it comes from the US where insurance companies are beginning to dictate what drugs should be given to patients by their consultants.

In particular, one insurance company is offering onocologists – a doctor who specialises in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of those with cancer  – $350 a month for each patient that is put on their recommended regime, including drugs.

What this means is that the newer, more expensive and more effective drugs such as Cimetidine, Interleukin-2 and off-label (drugs not licensed for the treatment of cancer) will be off limits to patients whose doctors agree to this “backhander”.

According to the Life Extension organisation “these cookbook protocols” will result in cancer patients dying sooner and using up fewer resources in the process and doctors will be able to squeeze more patients in.  If a doctor has 400 active patients and 100 are on the insurer’s “approved’ chemo drug programme that amounts to $35,000 a year and $420,000 a year.

Yet another reason, if one was needed, to fight for our National Health Service.

Keep summer’s golden glow through winter

A lovely caramel glow makes us all look that bit healthier. And this morning St.Tropez followed Julien Macdonald into the deep blue sea with a shimmering, caramel glow that was heralded as the Summer Season15 Mermaid Gleam at the London Fashion Week event.

LR St.Tropez Julien Macdonald Legs
“Think shimmer, gloss and iridescence. This is gorgeous, healthy skin that comes with a watery sheen to give our girls an otherworldly beauty,” said St. Tropez Global Tanning & Skin Finishing Expert, Nicholas Joss, backstage at The Royal Opera House.

Buffing St.Tropez Instant Tan Lotion Medium/Dark(£10.00) into the skin to create an even, honeyed warmth, a top coat of gleaming St.Tropez Self Tan Luxe Dry Oil (£25.00) added a shimmering finish that bounced light like the flick of a Mermaid’s tail as she
journeyed beneath the waves.

To carry this luminosity up onto the face, St. Tropez exclusively revealed the NEW St.Tropez Self Tan Face Oil, launching in March 2015. Massaging it in to models’ faces, Nichola was able to create plump, juicycomplexions that came with a soft, sun-kissed glow.

Step 1 Massage NEW St.Tropez Self TanFace Oil (launching March 2015) into the face
and allow it to absorb before applying makeup.
Step 2 Buff St.Tropez Instant Tan LotionMedium/Dark all over the body using the St.Tropez Tan Applicator Mitt to create an
even, caramel tone.
Step 3 Sweep St.Tropez Luxe Dry Oil down limbs and across the collarbone to lendskin a gorgeous, sub-aqua gleam.

Few of us would ever consider holidaying for a fortnight in a 5* hotel on the swanky Côte d’Azur. That’s because we’ve been given the impression that it can only be afforded by the mega wealthy, owners of superyachts and Ferraris, film stars and ageing tax exiles. But that picture is far from the truth.

Of course you will see yachts – of all kinds – Roman Abramovich’s Eclipse was anchored off Antibes while we were there. And we were able to get a good view of the world’s second largest yacht which boasts 2 swimming pools, 2 helicopters, a submarine etc etc. And we did that from a little glass bottom tour boat which also gets so close to the exclusive luxury hotels on the nearby Roc that we can see the indignant looks on the faces of the bathers on their loungers.

But there is another side lovely side to this area – places that the ordinary working folk who live there know about and would rather we didn’t.  And I don’t blame them. Like the folks of London’s Notting Hill who decant elsewhere during the carnival to escape people doing all kinds of despicable things in their front gardens, the people of Cannes flee the town during the Film Festival. So its not all red carpet glamour, especially if you live and work there!

Cannes Market – far more exciting than the designer shops – we spot five different types of asparagus! And everything looks so wonderfully fresh and vibrant.

Monastry Abbey

Abbaye de Lerins – on an island accessible by boat from Cannes – with a shop and restaurant – worth a visit

Cannes has shops with reasonable prices and one of the best food markets I have ever seen (near the station) and an array of great  budget hotels and bed and breakfast’s (there is a list in the tourist office in the Palais des Festival). The local tourism body is very keen for us to see the everyday value-for-money side of the this town.

I was recently pleasantly surprised to find that even the exclusive headland area, between Nice and Cannes, called Cap d’Antibes – home to even more expensive hotels, such as the Hotel du Cap – Eden Roc where Sharon Stone was celebrating when we popped in – also has undiscovered gems.

Pools

Hotel Baie des Anges – a relaxing place to spend time by the pool

The 4* Baie des Anges Hotel is one.  Set within a pine forest on a hill, it has a spectacular view of the bay all the way to Nice.  It is slightly secluded but the hotel runs a regular mini-bus service to the town of Antibes with its bougainvilla clad houses, tiny alleyways, restaurants, market, bustling port and the Picasso Museum.

Baie des Anges underwent a complete renovation over nine months in 2013 which moved it up from a 3 to 4 star hotel.  It also boasts a gastronomique restaurant – l’Angelus, with panoramic views of the coast. It’s lunchtime when we arrive and relaxed enough to allow guests who have been lounging around the pools or enjoying the spa to eat in their towelling robes.

The menu uses seasonal local produce with some cocktails reflecting the wellness theme with essential oils! But old habits die hard since for me since a Kir Royale epitomises the Côte.

The hotel has 164 rooms (suits and some apartments) – all with a balcony and air conditioning; three salt water swimming pools and one of the best thalassotherapy centres and spas in the region – it was also the first sea water spa on the Mediterranean coast for more than 20 years.

Thalasur twin-bedded room

A typical double room

The thalasso spa is enormous with two inside heated salt water pools with bubbling seats and underwater jets, a Jacuzzi, a Turkish bath and an extensive menu of treatments for health and relaxation. There is also a fully equipped gym.

Thalazur indoor pool

During our visit the nearby town of Juan les Pins was buzzing with the annual Jazz Festival where Stevie Wonder and George Benson were billing, so we went in quest of peaceful santuary to recouperate  in the spa for the day.

Our recommended programme included:

  • Gommage Sous Affusion – body exfoliation, using marine plants which improves the circulation and cleans the skin to prepare for the treatments
  • Enveloppement D’Algues Remineralisante – the body is enveloped in hot seaweed and mud.  Next you are wrapped in a hot blanket while the body detoxes and hydrates. Total bliss as you fall asleep enveloped in the warm water blanket.
  • Bain hydromassant – a warm, very active bubbling bath of seawater with massage jets
  • Modelage “Aroma” – a lovely massage with Mediterranean essential oils from Provence.

We also tried the hydro-bike exercise class – which was a bit like a spin class underwater. The day was well spent and we felt cleansed and relaxed by the time we left.

This spa has treatments for everyone including new mothers (and fathers) and babies; slimming and nutrition, detox and anti-stress.  It also has various packages and special offers. It also welcomes guests who simply want a spa day at the hotel.

For those who don’t just want to lie around there is plenty to do and not too far to go to do it. There is Marineland – the only one in Europe; the village of Grasse, famous for its perfume shops and a trip to old Nice is a must.

I really liked this hotel – everything was clean, the rooms were spacious, the staff were chatty, and nothing was too much for the spa therapists, the food was great – and the fellow guests were normal people, a few with children, who came to relax rather than make a splash with their cash.

Prolight

£49.99 at Boots.com

We all want a whiter, brighter smile but with professional whitening treatments at the dentist costing up to £700 a time, they aren’t within everyone’s reach.

This month, however, sees the launch of a groundbreaking teeth whitening system set to change all that. Based on the same light activating technology used by dentists but in a portable kit for use at home, Luster Pro Light promises whiter, brighter teeth in as little as 30 minutes and with no tooth or gum sensitivity which can be a common and unwanted side effect of other DIY whitening treatments.
Already a best-seller and close to becoming the No1 teeth whitening system in America where it first went on sale, Luster Pro Light is the UK’s first complete DIY teeth whitening system to use the same paint-on gel and activating ‘blue light’ technology used by dentists. Professional laser treatments, where this laser light is used to activate bleach applied to the teeth, are considered the safest route to a brighter smile but are also the most costly.
Priced at £49.99 the Luster Pro Light system costs a fraction of the price of professional treatments and it already has a pre order waiting list when it goes on sales at Boots.com this month.

Up until now, trays and strips have been the most popular DIY treatments. Trays come with a whitening agent that you attach to your teeth but can be fiddly and because the trays aren’t custom-fitted they can cause uneven distribution of bleach and spotting on the teeth. Whitening strips are also popular but can only whiten the front teeth.
The three-step Luster Pro Light kit carries some of the strongest claims on the market and is based on an easy to use rinse, brush and light regime that visibly whitens teeth in half the time of other trays, strips, gels and rinses. Most importantly, it won’t cause teeth or gum sensitivity and soreness, symptoms often experienced with other home whitening systems. In as little as 30 minutes, users reported teeth whitening of up to six shades lighter than their original shade.
How Luster Pro Light works:
Step 1: Rinse with the mouth wash for 10 seconds.
Step 2: Brush the whitener gel on your top and bottom teeth.
Step 3: Hold the whitening light about six inches from your teeth for 2 minutes. There is a built-in timer, so no need for a stopwatch. Repeat the process 10 times and the treatment is complete.

Luster Pro Light is part of the Luster Premium White range, a daily oral care whitening regime which has become a runaway success since its launch. Close to becoming the most popular home whitening system in America, the range also includes whitening toothpastes and mouthwash that can be used daily to maintain the results of the Pro Light system, keep teeth white, gums healthy and to freshen breath.
The range includes Luster Premium White Luster NOW! Instant Whitening Toothpaste 3 x 45 ml Tubes £11.99

Developed using a breakthrough whitening complex, the Luster NOW! Instant Whitening Toothpaste will instantly whiten teeth after just ONE Brush. This convenient 3-pack is perfect for work, home and for travel and this daily anti-cavity toothpaste gentle enough for daily use.
Top 5 tips to keep teeth whiter than white
1. Use whitening toothpaste in conjunction with a teeth whitening system to keep the shine from fading and stains at bay.
2. Use a whitening floss to reach the plaque-heavy areas between teeth that soak up colours
3. Invest in an electric toothbrush to keep your smile cleaner and whiter. A high quality electric brush will remove most stains from the surface of the teeth which, over time, will help take teeth back to their original colour.
4. Crunchy, crispy fruits have an abrasiveness that can help to lift stains from the teeth and give the illusion that they are whiter. Try munching on apples, celery and carrots, which have enough abrasiveness to clean the tooth surface without harming the enamel.
5. Watch the tea, coffee, juice and wine – they’re all oral-bling killers.

Luster Pro Light goes on sale at Boots this month. It will be available in larger stores nationwide and also from Boots.com

Leighton Denny launches his own bespoke perfume

Former dyslexic forklift truck driver turned beauty entrepreneur Leighton Denny launched his new perfume at London’s W Hotel recently.

Light & Dark eau de parfum

Typically we were not surprised to learn that Leighton has not just put his name to a perfume concocted by a chemical company but choose all the ingredients and got them put together himself.

In a very classy black and white box Light & Dark – which also stands for Leighton Denny is “for the woman who likes to feel powerful yet sophisticated”!

Light & Dark

Its a lovely oriental floral fragrance. And as Leighton points out to us at the launch he personally selected the unique combination of oils in the scent which include pepper, myrrh and incense.

Other notes are gardenia, jasmine, lilly and rose, along with top notes of mandarin, grapefruit, peach and white pepper.

Leighton says: “For those who want to seduce, this is the perfect weapon. It is wild, mysterious and intoxicating – a scent that women love to wear and that men adore on them.”

Well that’s what we ladies want in a perfume isn’t it!

Oh and he suggests we apply it to our inner thighs “so the scent wafts up and around them.”

Light & Dark eau de parfum does smell wonderful and its a great price too at just £43.50 for 70ml and can be purchased online at www.LD-Scent.com

Slow down eye ageing – win a month’s supply of MacuShield

MacuShield Gold is an eye supplement, which ingredients are of the highest quality and are provided at the correct amounts, scientifically proven to slow down the process of AMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration) to the late, blinding stage of the disease. It contains three nutrients: Meso-Zeaxanthin, Lutein and Zeaxanthin.

Scientific research shows that the yellow colour at the back of the eye, known as macular pigment, comes from these three carotenoid nutrients. Studies show that these three nutrients work together by rebuilding the yellow filter at the back of the eye, thereby enhancing visual performance and filtering out the harmful aspects of light which lead to damage at the back of the eye.

Is your pension a mousetrap?

Final salary pensioners are being urged to explore options to mitigate risks posed by the growing pension deficit threat, following reports of a potential cheese share-price war in the UK.

The warnings from Reece Fallaize, Global Technical Adviser at deVere Group, one of the world’s largest independent advisory organisations, come after shares in Dairy Crest, makers of Cathedral City cheese, tumbled on Friday following reports that it could face increasingly strong competition from supermarket brands.

Mr Fallaize explains: “To plug a blackhole in its pension scheme, last year Dairy Crest put £60m worth of cheese into the fund. Therefore, pension members maybe negatively affected should the market value of cheese fall.

“Potentially, pension members may see the scheme’s funding decrease which in turn could lead the trustees of the scheme to make some amendments to members’ benefits to reduce the pension liabilities.”

He continues: “This example of how a possible cheese price war could hit retirees’ income should offer a wake-up call for all members of final schemes.

“Despite rising equity markets and global outlook looking relatively rosy, companies are still struggling to fund their pension schemes.

“The pension deficits for FTSE 350 companies reached an all-time high of £113bn at end of May 2014.

“It is important for pension members to understand exactly what represents a risk to their pensions and how these can be mitigated.

“In the same way people have their cars regularly serviced, it is now more important than ever that individuals seek independent advice on an annual basis to ensure that they fully understand their pensions and how much they are likely to receive in retirement.

“Regularly reviewing and taking action, where appropriate and possible to do so to keep on track with your financial planning strategy, will mean that you’re less likely to receive an unwelcome financial surprise when you come to retire.”
