Ask the anti-ageing doctor with Dr John Moran

Dr John Moran is a specialist in hormone replacement therapies for the treatment of symptoms of the menopause, andropause and sexual disfunction

Here he answers some of your questions:

What can I do to stop these dreadful menopausal night sweats?

This is one of the most unpleasant symptoms of the menopause and can last for years.  Its caused by a decline and imbalance of hormones. You may also  want to consider a blood test to see what your hormones are doing – and depending on the results whether you need hormone replacement therapy (HRT) either from your GP or bioidentical hormone replacement which is one of the most effective ways of treating the menopause.

I have heard about the male menopause – it is true that men go through this as well?

Yes – once thought to be fiction rather than fact, medical research has now established that there is a slow decline in androgens, including the male hormone testosterone, in men from the age of 50 onwards.  Its also called the male climacteric or andropause.

Here are six easily recognisable symptoms of the andropause:

1.  Low sex drive and reduced erectile quality, particularly at night
2. Mood changes, irritability, fatigue and depression
3. Decrease in lean body mass with associated loss of muscle strength
4. Decrease in body hair and skin elasticity
5. Decreased bone mineral density resulting in osteopenia, when small amounts of bone are starting to be lost, can be dectected by testing in a hip and spine bone density scan.  Osteopenia is the stage prior to full-blown osteoporosis and is an amber light warning.  A urine tesr can also detect bone turnover
6. Increased abdominal fat may put men at risk of coronary heart disease and diabetes
Since I reached my 40s I have started to gain weight is there anything I can do outside of a diet and exercise to get rid of these extra pounds around my middle?

First of all you need to look at your lifestyle.  Are you eating healthily?  Are you taking enough exercise? The amount of abdominal fat around the middle is an indicator of several diseases of ageing including cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes.  As people age they become more sedentary and a decline in hormones which help with energy doesn’t help.  Get a checkup, including dietary advice.

I keep getting up in the middle of the night to urinate – do you know what could be causing this?

It may be nothing but frequent urinating at night can be a symptom of diabetes.  This may also be linked to prostate problems. Ask your doctor for a blood/urine tests.
I used to have beautiful soft skin and shiny hair but my skin is getting dry and my hair lacklustre?

The cause may be a number of conditions – most likely not very serious – depending on your age and general health.  Its likely a simple dietary deficiency.  Are you taking enough Omega 3 – ie fish oils, eating nuts and seeds – these not only help our skin and hair but also feed our brain, helping to protecting against neurological damage.
I’ve heard about bioidentical hormones – what are they?

They are made from plants and are bioidentical to those made by our body and may include estrogen, natural progesterone, testerone and DHEA.  Whereas the HRT prescribed by most doctors, at least on the NHS, is artificial and made from  synethetic substances and mare’s urine, branded Premarin, for example.
I am a 50-year-old man and know I should be more active but I feel tired all the time and my sex life has gone out of the window? Is there a natural solution to this such as vitamins and supplements?

The answer may be as simple as changing your diet and exercise but older men often feel this way because of the decline in hormones.  You should seek advice and get a full checkup.
Is is good for older people to have sex or should they stop at a certain age?

There is no reason to stop having sex has we get older providing that is what you and your partner both want.  It stimulates us mentally and physically – assisting the release of beneficial hormones – and its a form of exercise so good all round.
I want to loose weight, can hormone replacement help?

It depends.  If you have put on weight recently then you need to look at your lifestyle and diet.  A blood and/or urine test to see what is happening with your hormones may help.  Many older woman do suffer from an underactive thyroid and supplementation may help but you would need to have tests to determine this.

Dolce Frégate Resort, St Cyr Sur Mer, Marseille, Provence

archMarseille [400x300].JPGBy Avril O’Connor

Dolce Frégate is a perfect hotel for a long weekend. It’s about one-hour’s drive from Marseille – so you can do France’s second largest City and escape to the tranquilty of this five star hotel, set beside a links golf course.

The service at Dolce is exceptional and the staff are friendly – not intimidating.

As the sun goes down I pop along to the bar for a Kir Royale. I am welcomed and made to feel at home.

Then its off to the terrace for dinner. The food here is superb and the wines are mostly from Provence, including the hotel’s own vineyard, Domaine de Fregate, in the Bandol region,  which I visit earlier that day.

Historically, a fregate (in English frigate) was a sailing warship, of a size just below that of a ship of the line (the main and most heavily armoured fighting ships)| Just over 2 km from Dolce Fregate is the fishing village of Bandol, which gives its name to one of Provence’s most internationally recognized wine regions. The Bandol AOC (appellation d’origine contrôlée) covers production from eight neighbouring communes, whose limestone soil and warm, coastal climate is ideally suited for the late ripening Mourvedre grape. The Mourvedre accounts for at least 50% of the composition of most red and rose wines from this area.

The Bardo vineyard is is set in fields of huge lavender bushes with all kinds of beautiful butterflies and bees flying around – it’s magical.

There is lots to do nearby if you don’t want to relax exactly. You can take a trip out to the Calanques – a rocky coastline to which Corsica was once joined.

The stunning Dolce Frégate resort exudes the quintessential Provençal character from beginning to end, with earthy tones, Romanesque roof tiles, and panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline.

The 4* hotel presents 133 superbly appointed guest rooms and suites, complete with terracotta tiled flooring, solid oak furniture, and the finest linen. Additionally, the rooms are fitted with private balcony or terrace, and all the expected contemporary features, including full climate control, satellite television and direct dial telephone.

The fantastic Provençal destination is a comprehensive venue that caters well for groups and families, with excellent facilities and culinary options, explaining why Dolce Frégate is firmly entrenched as one of the most desirable luxury golf holiday options.

The Dolce Frégate resort has superb leisure facilities; soak up the reliable rays from the sun terrace which surrounds the stunning three-tiered outdoor swimming pool, or work up a sweat on the tennis and petanque courts. Inside the hotel you will find a gym, featuring the latest in cardiovascular training technology, two saunas, a jacuzzi, and a swimming pool, while the beauty salon offers a wide range of excellent relaxation therapy.

Gastronomy is to the fore at Dolce Frégate; head to Mas Des Vignes for fine Provencal classics, or the more informal La Restanque brasserie.

The resort also boasts 13 meeting rooms and excellent conference facilities, making it a great corporate golf destination.

The gourmet experience will be accentuated by the finest vintages from the Domaine de Frégate vineyard.

Conceived by the esteemed and prolific American designer Ronald Fream, Frégate is considered to be one of the most beautiful courses in all of France. As the course winds around the resort’s impressive estate, visiting golfers are presented with awe-inspiring views down over the Mediterranean coastline.

The golf course which  is very pretty at least from a female perspective has one draw back, the little lakes and ponds are full of frogs which croak at full blast throughout the night FACT BOX

In the spa footsteps of the Grand Tourists in Tuscany

The modern spa experience, accompanied by the sounds of the rain forest and the smell of burning candles, can leave you feeling soporific and drained. But spas were not always so prescriptive.

pool.jpgIn Italy, for example, natural thermal waters deep underground and containing therapeutic minerals, spawned a spa culture from Roman times.

But it was during the Belle Epoque and the Grand Tour, in the early 19th century that wealthy foreigners took to “taking the waters” abroad.

Tuscany, in particular became a hotspot for these pleasure seekers.  It was not just the health benefits and the natural beauty of the area that attracted them but also because they could enjoy roulette and other forms of gambling outlawed by the state.

The poets Byron, Browning, Shelley, the composer Puccini rubbed shoulders with European Royalty, Russian princes and the Napoleon family. As one local reporter described the social scene at the time in one of the most popular,  Bagni de Lucca: “one is knee-deep in Royal Highnesses”.

Today you can still visit these historic “termes” but be warned there are no faux Buddah’s and no candles.  Be prepared for a more rustic and invigorating spa experience.

In Bagni di Lucca, about an hour from Lucca, the ancient thermal waters, rise in geothermal caves known as Grotta and  it was here that the spa culture was centered. The Grotta Paoline, names after one patron – Napoleon’s sister, is now part of the spa and wellness centre at the four star Antico AlbergoTerme. The hotel overlooks a picturesque valley with forests of pinewood and chestnut, bramble bush and beech trees. grottaP.jpg

Because of their historical and geographical nature the Grotta have been left as much as possible in their rustic state – the only comforts are ancient marble benches and modern low lighting. The waters contain many beneficial minerals (sulphur, carbon, calcium), particularly for respiratory and skin conditions.  You will likely see children and the elderly taking the vapours in a special room as these Terme are part of the state health system.  including and rain water at 3kms of depth and 54 degrees.

After an interview with a qualified doctor, Iana Togneri, we go the Grotta in our bathing suits and sit on the marble benches to sweat out our toxins. These vapours are very strong and rise into the cave at about 54◦c and we are advised that it’s not beneficial to stay too long. After about 15 minutes we are wrapped in a soothing hot towel and left to relax on bed.  The hyperthermia induced by the steam bath is balanced by the cold spa water shower in the same room.  The difference in the two water temperatures stimulates circulation throughout the body, helping to eliminate toxins.  This steam is a natural stress reliever as the heat encourages muscles to relax and tension slips away. So when you lay down to rest in a warm towel you may find that you do fall into a restful slumber. The steam bath costs €20 ($25, £16) and you can combine it with other treatments such as a Hammam deep cleanse

The spa wellness centre has a large range of mud baths, massages and other treatments using  thermal water. There is an anti-stress massage which lasts 30 or 60 mins (€34, $43, £27/€64, $82, £52)) anti-cellulite, aromatheraphy, salt, olive oil, stone, oriental and lymphatic drainage.  And a great facial massage with volcanic mud – €28 euro and scrubs which use the local chestnuts and olive oil.

On our way back through the wellness centre we pass through a very beautiful and elegant room which was once the site of the oldest casino in Europe and  invented the roulette wheel to relieve clients of their money.

ceilingoldspa.JPG The casino at nearby Ponte a Serraglio first opened in 1839 has recently reopened as an electronic casino and we visited one evening.  A sort of Las Vegas interior meets real palazzo is not what we expected. The Casino Reale was built by Carlo Ludovico di Borbone and still contains some of the original decorations but it is now filled with electronic casino machines and the tourist office.

electronicasino.JPGThe hotel rooms have recently been refurbished and are clean and comfortable with great views of the valley and some have huge balconies with loungers. The bathroom does not have toiletries such as shower gel so luckily we had some of our own. The restaurant is more family than romantic. But there is a great pool and the staff are friendly and helpful. A great place, off the beaten track, great for relaxing and walking.

The Antico Albergo Terme offers a number of wellness packages which don’t include the room price and meals: Weekend – two days of body and facial treatments (€215, $290, £190) or Wellbeing and Ambience Package 6 days of treatments €418, $564, £368. Check the prices when you book as currency exchange rates and seasonal prices may var.

Termi Bagni de Lucca also has its own line of wellness products including cleansers, toners and masks made with chestnut flour.

Don’t miss

Lucca – Hire a cycle and ride round the cobbled streets and piazzas which are pedestrianized or walk the 16th century walls.  Giacomo Puccini was born here in 1858 and there is a statue in one of the main squares.

Puccini.JPGThe Ponte Maddalena, at Borgo a Mozzano, which is also known as the Ponte del Diavolo built in the 12th century

The Ponte delle Catene  – a chain suspension bridge built in 1840 in Fornoli and recently restored. Now used only as a footbridge connecting Fornoli and Chifenti on the other side of the river Lima.

The medieval walled town of Barga – a mountain town where you can see the scenary for miles around.  It has an interesting 13th century cathedral, high on a terrace.

The delicatessen, Bellandi, via Jacopo da Chiviszzano, 4 in the village of Ghivizzano in the area of Garfagnana. www.selezionebellandi.com – you will find delicious sausages, local prosciutto, black sausages with chestnuts, friendly service and perhaps a glass of wine.

Gene cocktail creates beating heart cells

Los Angeles: A new technique, in which a gene cocktail, has been successfully to create beating heart cells, has been used on mice.

The new technique could also cut the need for transplants in people whose ailing hearts cannot mend themselves.

heart.bmpIf developed for use in human patients the new treatment could change the lives of many thousands of sick people.

The experiments, which were carried out on mice, are still in the early stages, but they offer fresh hope for the future.

They centre on the large muscular cells that allow the heart to beat and go about its vital work of pumping blood. Normally, the body has little or no way of replacing any that die or are damaged.

But researchers at the California’s Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, have devised a cocktail of genes that trick other heart cells called fibroblasts into transforming into beating muscle cells called cardiomyocytes.

The journal Cell reports how fibroblasts treated with the cocktail in the lab turned into beating muscle cells after being transplanted into a mouse.

Masaki Ieda of the Gladstone Institute said: “Scientists have tried for 20 years to convert non-muscle cells into heart muscle. It turns out we just needed the right combination of genes in the right dose.”

Deepak Srivastava, senior study author from Gladstone, said: “The ability to re-programme fibroblasts into cardiomyocytes has many therapeutic implications.

“Half of the cells in the heart are fibroblasts, so the ability to call upon this reservoir of cells already in the organ to become beating heart cells has tremendous promise for cardiac regeneration.”

In time a drug that works in the same way as the cocktail of genes could be developed. Injected into damaged hearts, it would drive the growth of new muscle.

“That’s our long-term goal,” said Srivastava.

Every two minutes, someone, somewhere has a heart attack. Many go on to develop heart failure, in which the weakened heart gradually loses its ability to pump blood.

Up to 40 per cent of these die within a year of diagnosis – giving heart failure a worse survival rate than many cancers.

Other organs could be patched up in a similar way, the researchers believe.

Shiny hair treats

One of the reasons that hair usually looks old is when it starts to become dry, wirey, lacklustre and frizzy.  In the past there was not much to be done.  Take a look at your diet and make sure you are eating enough good oily foods such as sardines, mackerel and salmon, seeds and nuts, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables.

There are now a vast array of products promising a healthy shine but older hair usually needs something very special to improve it.

We have looked at three new products on the market and given our verdict

BC Bonacure Smooth Shine from Schwarzkopf

BC BONACURE SMOOTH SHINE uses the innovative new IPS Complex (Ionic Polymer Shield Complex) to target the specific needs of coarse, unmanageable and dull hair. Combining the IPS Complex with BC’s Amino Cell Rebuild technology, for the first time there is a complete range that will leave hair caressably soft and glossy, repair the internal structure and help to prevent future problems, giving you the freedom to style your hair how you want.

This new treatment range not only includes a special in-salon only treatment but products that can be used daily, at home for gorgeously luxe locks:

NEW BC BONACURE SMOOTH SHINE SHAMPOO (200ml, £8.85/€11.60) – suitable for daily use, this shampoo cleanses, nourishes and smoothes hair for luminous shine.

NEW BC BONACURE SMOOTH SHINE CONDITIONER (200ml, £9.95/€13.00) – a daily use conditioner providing an even surface and satin shine.

NEW BC BONACURE SMOOTH SHINE LEAVE IN TREATMENT (200ml, £11.20/€14.50) – this hero product is the first leave in treatment in BC’s portfolio. It repairs the internal hair structure, shielding it during the smoothing process and leaves tresses with a velvety touch.BCSmoothshineleavein.jpg

NEW BC BONACURE SMOOTH SHINE SMOOTHING MILK (125ml, £9.95/ €13.00) – a pre blow dry treat to style and smooth providing the perfect finishing touch to any style.

NEW BC BONACURE SMOOTH SHINE INSTANT SMOOTHING SHOT (in-salon only) – an intense shot that delivers instant care by closing the cuticle and helping to deliver control and definition for hair that sparkles with radiance.

Our Verdict: Schwarzkopf is one of the best ranges around and rarely disapoints.  We tried the Amino Cell rebuilt leave in treatment. This is a great product for hair that has been dehyrated by too much sun, seawater or curling tongs.  Immediate results are seen and the results get better each time its used. 8/10.
