Speedo launches first body sculpting swimsuit

image

The swimwear genuiuses at Speedo created a new fabric technology that sculpts a woman’s body into shape

The Speedo Shapeline, is a range of three swimsuit designs, that help accentuate the shapely parts of a women’s body.

The bust shaper (Natasha) is great for the fuller-busted woman, flattering the bust area and balancing the silhouette; the waist shaper (Madeleine) is for straight or hourglass figures, complementing natural curves and shaping the waist; and the tummy and hip sculptor (Maria) is designed to complement pear-shaped women.

The swimsuit, which costs £100, is made of ultra soft, high performing fabric that ensures a smooth and flat appearance and comes in a range of bra sizes from 30B to 34G in suits size 10-20. This ensures a very flattering silhouette with double-layed stomach panels to provide maximum support, nipping in at the waist to accentuate curves.

Speedo researched the body shapes of 5,400 women who categorize the female body into three different types – bottom hourglass, hourglass and top hourglass – 95% of women fell into these three categories.

The swimsuits are available in two colours – black and red and more information is available at www.speedosculpture.com.

Photographer Mary McCartney was commissioned to take the launch photos below:

Nice, at least the famous beach in front of the famous Promenade des Anglais isn’t what it used to be. True the city is still as captivating as ever, with its bustling flower and food markets and overflowing restaurants, the opera house and the five-star Hotel Negresco.

So down on the beach sipping a delicious kir royale as the sun goes down over the bluest of Mediterrean Seas is the perfect way to end a day of sightseeing. At the popular Beau Rivage restaurant I order my drink and while I wait close my eyes listening to the mesmerising sound of the waves lapping back and forth on the beach. Suddenly my golden moment is shattered as an Easyjet blasts overhead as it lands at the new seaside runway at nearby Nice Airport. It seems only 15 minutes later, yet another Easyjet …passes and another….

But the locals don’t seem bothered – proof if any were needed that even the fabulously weathy Cote d’Azur residents are prepared to see low cost airlines sweeping across their fabulous bay if it brings in paying punters like myself.

It also clearly does not detract from that other enjoyable Niçoise pastime – people watching! My fellow diners are gawping at the rear silhouette of a glamorous “young” woman, model size 4, dripping in huge diamonds and wearing red six inch stilettos with huge diamonté Chanel logos on the heels. She is walking somewhat precariously with the support of her elderly male companion to a nearby table. When she turns to sit down even her cosmetically enhanced face and blue-veined hands cannot hide the fact that she must be in her 70s.

So Nice and the glamorous Riveria still attracts the well-heeled but what do the locals do at the height of the summer season, when their beaches are packed, the sun swelters and and the unmistakable oily whiff of Ambre Solaire wafts through the air?

The answer is that they escape to a peaceful sanctuary of wild and rugged gorges, Alpine pastures and mountains – all within an hour’s drive – where the temperature is 10 degrees or more lower.

Once the snow has melted late in Spring, the Alpes-Maritimes becomes a wonderful playground for anyone seeking a healthier physical and financial alternative to the Cote d’Azur. The area has some of Europe’s highest canyons and national parks thriving with wildlife including wolves, lynx and golden eagles.

Taking the D6202 which skirts the River Va along an unremarkable industrialised valley, passing the perfume town of Grasse, before the road rises through the spectacular Gorges du Cians (pictured) – where it is possible to walk through the rocky river beds during the summer season if its dry. Parts of the old medieval road are also walkable.

The favourite resort of the locals, particularly in August where they decend en mass is the small ski-resort of Valberg. At 1700 metres it becomes virtually snow-bound from October until early Spring but in the summer it is a perfect outdoor activity centre.

The Adventure Discovery Park, a short walk from the village centre, has an abundance of activities for all fitness levels, including children. There is an assault course in the nearby forest where you abseil through the trees, get the ski lift up and return down a winding chute in a sled. There is also trout fishing, horseback riding and golfing. Even watching from the safety of a nearby café is quite entertaining as unsuspecting tourists scream as they gather speed at the end of the abseil and crash into a padded wall at the end.

But my favourite is walking. Though, I must confess, one of the most bizarre I have encountered is the Le Sentier Planétaire in which scaled down model of the Earth’s solar system has been set in one of the most beautiful landscapes on earth. Our guide Cedric Robion, who also doubles as ski instructor also has difficulty explaining the concept.

Walking through shaded forest and sunlight glades we pass giant sculptures representing the seven planets, earth and the sun. The trek which can last anything from 1.5 to five hours starts opposite the tourist office in the centre of the town. Despite my own scepticism the walk takes you through some beautiful countryside with sunlite glades and meadows covered in the most beautiful Alpine plants (pictured).

Is is worth getting a guide as ours points out a whole wealth of flora and fauna we could otherwise have missed including wild orchid, rare birds and landmarks in the nearby Parc National du Mercantour, a giant national park which joins another in nearby Italy and is home to wolves, 50 pairs of golden eagles, griffins and vultures and the lynx which was reintroduced to the area.

Not to be missed is a round of golf at the nearby Valberg Golf Club, which at around 2,000 metres plus, is a bracing experience even at the height of summer. But the views of the mountains are breathtaking. Designed by mountain golf course architect Oliverie Dongradio, the 9-hole par 34 course is also home to some interesting local wildlife…A strange errie whisle, perfected by the local inhabitants brings the creatures – a species of ground squirrel, called Marmots (pictured below), out of their burrows and they play, even doing summersaults in the favourite habitat…the bunkers.

The variety of flowers and herbs which grow in this region are renowned for the medicinal properties and at La Ribière (pictured below), two kilometres north of Guillaumes, a local couple make a modest living distilling plants, gathered from the nearby Alpes.

Seventy-two year-old Pierre Parré and his wife Monique, 64, gather the plants, including wild lavender and thyme, locally and distill them traditionally in a copper vat. The villagers hit the vat from the Germans during the War. Behind their home, there is a hillside garden with examples of the many plants used and Monique, who by the way is as agile as a goat on the slopes, loves nothing more than to chat about her garden to passing visitors.

Perhaps this is because visitors are few in the winter months as their home as it is cut off by snow between October and early Spring. There is a small shop where you can purchase many inexpensive items.

As an alternative to expensive Cannes and a few miles towards St Tropez is the quieter and less flashy Mandelieu La Napoule, where they are great restaurants, beaches and even a castle – Chateau Napoule. The original site was a medieval fortress but in the 1920s it was restored by wealthy Americans, Henry and Marie Clews, as a meeting place for artists. As well as the collection of sculptures and the gardens, dining in the ramparts restaurant is worth the experience, if only for the view.

Mandelieu, has all the marine activities you would expect. At the popular Pierre et Vacances family apartment hotel, you can sail from the nearby river into the bay and swim or snorkel.

What better way to see the sunset that to take the gentle inclining path up to the highest local spot, Mont San Peyre – at the top where you get a panorama of the coast including the whole length of Cannes.

And with all the money you have saved by visiting the places the locals go to, dine at one of the only restaurants in the area to have two Michel stars. L’Oasis Restaurant’s chef is Parisien Stéphane Rimbault so expect high gastronomy.

And you won’t be disappointed the service and food are both first class and if you are lucky enough to dine al fresco it’s a magical end to your visit to the South of France.

How you feel on the inside is real beauty – new research

image

New research shows young women expect men to judge them mostly on their appearance, while mature ladies know it’s how YOU feel inside that counts.

It seems that young women weren’t listening when their mothers told them, “it’s what’s on the inside that counts”. Women in their 20s and 30s, more than any other age group, expect to be judged on their physical appearance, according to new research out today.

Contrary to what people say about inner beauty, over half of the young women surveyed (53%) feel they are judged on their physical appearance, compared to just over a third (36%) of women aged 56 or over. A third (38%) will rely on their intellect to make a good first impression, compared to half (50%) of their older, and perhaps wiser, counterparts.

It seems that as we get older, we realise that it is more about how we feel than how we look. Research conducted on behalf of TENA Lady with new Fresh Odour Control TM, the UK’s leading bladder weakness brand, found that more than half of women over 56 (56%), feel most confident when they’re feeling fresh and smelling good, irrespective of the clothes they’re wearing or how much make-up they have on.

Dr Dawn Harper, from Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies programme, comments: “When we smell fresh and feel clean it gives us more confidence when meeting new people, and it’s the little things that make us radiate this confidence – whether it’s after a relaxing bubble bath or using a new perfume. I see lots of women who suffer with a weak bladder and one of their greatest concerns is that they smell to those around them. Doing regular pelvic floor exercises and using a pad such as TENA Lady with new Fresh Odour Control TM can strengthen the bladder and help them regain the confidence to live life to the full’.

Bladder weakness is more common than people think, with 1 in 4 women over the age of 35 experiencing it at some point in their lives. For more information on how to deal with issues that may affect your confidence, such as bladder sensitivity visit www.TENA.co.uk

Shiseido launches first anti-ageing serum to grow younger skin cells

image

London: Shiseido, the Japanese luxury skincare company, has scored a first in skin care technology with the launch of a new anti-ageing serum that stimulated the skin to produce younger cells.

Bio-Performance Super Corrective Serum, with a relatively cheap price tag of £82, for a top of the range cosmeceutical with proven scientific trials, launches in the UK on Saturday (27th February).

Already top stores such as Harrods are holding client lists waiting to be the first to try this innovative technology.

Bio-Performance Super Corrective Serum contains two ingredients, together called Bio-Regenerist, which have been shown to promote the production of the skin’s fibroblasts by up to 27%.

Fibroblasts are cells in the epidermis (skin layers) which are responsible for producing the key constituents of firm and young skin including collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

Shiseido is so confident that this new product works that it has not hesitated in declaring that it works right from day one – in trials on 222 women 100% said their skin felt more resilient – while 92% said they felt their wrinkles has been smoothed.

Shiseido’s approach in the development of this new serum was to look at recent developments in regenerative cosmetic medicine, in particular the use of epidermal growth factors (EGF) which cosmetic doctors extract from a patient’s blood serum and reinject into the face to encourage skin cell proliferation and rejuvenated, younger skin.

The serum’s two key ingredients, in the Bio-Regenerist complex are extracts from safflower and yeast, which stimulate an increase in EGF protein, which in turn signals the fibroblast cells to renew and proliferate.

As a result these younger cells are able to produce more collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid – targetting wrinkles sagging, dullness and lack of radiance.

This new product is aimed at women (and men) aged 30+ when the skin first starts to deteriorate.

Shiseido Bio Performance also contains Rose Apple Leaf Extract an antioxidant to help the fibroblasts fight oxidative damage including sun; Super bio-Hyaluronic Acid N – a humectant and Super Plant Bio Exfoliant to natural resurfacing

On sale from 27 February it costs £82 for 30ml. For stockist information call 0207 313 4774.

Model Nell McAndrew reveals core muscle secrets

image

Nell McAndrew shows us some simple exercises in this live webTV show tomorrow at 14.00 GMT to explain to women of all ages the benefits of strengthening their core muscles.

For women generally, health and wellbeing is of increasing importance. From step-ups to squats, we know the exercises we need to be doing to keep our body in shape. But one group of muscles often overlooked are our pelvic floor muscles.

Your pelvic floor is a complex network of muscles and ligaments reaching from your pubic bone to your spine, providing essential support for your bladder, womb and bowel. These muscles can stretch and weaken through pregnancy and childbirth, age or lack of exercise. A common side-effect of weakened pelvic floor muscles is bladder weakness – something which affects one in four women over the age of 35 in the UK.

Fortunately almost three-quarters of bladder weakness cases triggered by a weakened pelvic floor can be remedied with simple exercises. The exercises improve core muscle strength, contributing to better posture and a flatter tummy.

Joining us on this live webTV show will be Nell McAndrew who will demonstrate a few of the simple exercises that could make a world of difference to your figure and quality of life. She’s joined by Gill Brook, a women’s health physiotherapist who has worked in the specialty for over 20 years.

Nell McAndrew joins us live online at Nell McAndrew’s Core Muscle Exercises

on Wednesday 24th February at 2pm to discuss pelvic floor strength and demonstrate some simple exercises.

About Nell

Nell McAndrew is no stranger to a tough workout regime. The model and TV star and mum of one, has released four of her own fitness videos and makes it her priority to keep fit and healthy.

Janet Street-Porter – why positive thinking can help you live healthier & happier!

image

London Watch this live WebTV show later today (14.15 GMT) to find out how positive thinking can help you, with Britain’s uber-moaner Janet Street-Porter, who says she is changing her ways.

Women are well known for our penchant for moaning and our attitude for complaining. Whether it’s the cold weather, men problems, work or general health, we’re used to putting a negative spin on things. And February is one of the worst months of the year for moaning. Yet, how can we get out of the habit of complaining and start looking at things more positively?

Small things like eating healthy or doing exercise have a huge impact on your mood, releasing endorphins that help fight pain and stress and help you feel great. And by feeling great, you have much less of a need to gripe or whinge and are a far more positive person.

Janet Street-Porter is the UK’s most famous complainer, but while she may be able to handle Gordon Ramsay and the jungle setting of “I’m a Celebrity”, she’s still definitely one to have a moan. On this live WebTV show she will explain what she’s doing to reduce her complaining this February and how you too can think positive.

Tune in to find out what the positive impact of a positive mental attitude can be.

Janet Street-Porter and Amanda Ludlow, Head of Sales and Business Development at Benenden Healthcare Society join us live online at Click here to listen to Janet Street Portertoday at at 2.15pm to discuss positive mental attitudes.

Look younger – get firmer and plumper lips

image

London: Fuller and firmer lips help a woman look younger, according to new research by scientists.

The scientists, in a study funded by Unilever, studies the faces of 102 pairs of white Dutch female twins aged 59-81 and 161 Individual British white women aged 45-75.

They found that ageing manifesting in wrinkles, sun damage and age spots was influenced by genetic and environmental factors in equal amounts. But lip height was genetic.

Most ageing of lips begins between the ages of 30 and 40 when shrinking first starts.

David Gunn, a research scientist at Unilever said they study noted that women who looked young for their age usually had fuller and firmer lips.

He added: “It is a feature that is strongly genetically determined and relatively easy to measure.”

He also said there was little advantage in middle-aged and elderly woman getting lip implants as it did not counteract the impact of ageing on the rest of the face.

The research was carried out by seven universities, including St Andrew’s in Scotland.

Get back into those skinny jeans – top tips

image

London: Still got a pair of jeans in the back of the cupboard you can’t wait to get back into? You’re not alone….

A nice pair of jeans ticks both the boxes when it comes to fashion and comfort, and as the years have gone by they’ve remained an enduring style staple in many a closet.

Over a third of women (35%) admit to owning trophy jeans, a pair they used to fit into and aspire to fit into again in the future. These jeans –held on to as physical reminder of when they felt they looked their best – are frequently used as an inspiration to women to lose weight.

There are close to 130m pairs of jeans across the UK, with each woman owning an average of five different pairs. But these perfect jeans have been with many of us for so long that we have celebrated a crystal anniversary with them! One in ten women aged 55+ say they’ve held onto their jeans more than 10-15 years, according to new research.

These trophy jeans are also seen as offering the promise of more happiness than many of life’s seminal moments. One in five women say the elation of fitting into their goal pair could evoke more euphoria than attending their best friend’s wedding (21%) or even winning the lottery (20%). In fact, around one sixth of those women (16%) would forego more than £10,000 just to fit into their slim jeans! 2.3m women said achieving that jean dream would be better than a £25k lottery win.

As fashion is cyclical, chances are many women’s goal jeans will be back in fashion in 2010! On average women have held on to their goal jeans for 3 years with one in six women holding onto their trophy jeans for the length of time they’ve been at their job (18%), and a further one in ten women admitting their perfect jeans have outlasted their longest relationship, according to the research by Kellogg’s Special K as part of their Love Your Jeans Again campaign.

Psychotherapist Elisabeth Wilson said, “For many women having a motivational milestone is absolutely vital to their success and moreover their sense of achievement. 70% of the women surveyed said they would consider fitting back into their goal jeans a considerable achievement they’d be very proud of and it’s well documented that visualising themselves wearing their goal jeans is the kind of positive imaging that will help them achieve great results. This combined with the power of positive thinking, support from others and a plan to kick-start a healthy lifestyle leads to real results.

Diary of a non-surgical facelift – the Deka Smartxide laser

image

London: Earlier this year Anne Butcher underwent the new Deka Smartxide laser skin rejuvenation. She has kindly given us permission to publish her diary and to show the pictures of her treatment. Her diary and pictures take you through the treatment, which was carried out by Dr Aamer Khan at the Harley Street Medical Skin Clinic, and takes you throug the various stages of the procedure.

Anne: Friday 29th January at 1.15pm the anaesthetic cream was applied to my face, and pain killers were given to me.

Its now 2pm and my skin is cleansed. The treatment is started. Its a hot sensation but not unbearable. After the treatment my face is covered withsun protection. By 2.45pm its all finished and I am sitting back in waiting room.

My face is going hot and cold and starting to swell slightly.By 4.00pm I am in the car on the way home and the hot feeling has stopped.

Here is a picture of Anne shortly after her treatment:

Day of SmartXide Dot laser

During the evening I cleansed my face with wipes, my face was feeling very weepy and tender, I then washed it with vinegar water as I had been instructed, and put on a cream with a paraffin base which protects your skin, it made my skin feel very comfortable.

Saturday 31st January 7.00am – Woke up eyes almost shut, face very swollen, cleansed my face vinegar water, you would think this would sting but it did not, infact it stopped my face from weeping. Then applied more of the protective cream. I have not had to take any pain killers. By midday my skin was feeling very tight and weepy, again cleansed with vinegar water followed with the cream. Eyes almost closed I slept a lot as I could not focus properly to read or watch the TV. All through the day and evening I cleansed my face every 2 hours with the vinegar water, then applied protective cream.

Sunday 1st February 6.15am – Woke up and went and washed my face with vinegar water and applied cream, went back to bed, still very swollen.

12 noon – Got up washed with vinegar water and cream, swelling has gone down quite a lot, eyes not so tight, not weeping so much feel a lot better, no pain. Just tender when cleansing my face, I am now looking lobster red my skin has started to peel today. By the evening I stopped using vinegar water as I was peeling so much, face just feels tender, much less swelling. Cleansing with wipes, still applying cream regularly.

Monday 2nd February Looking a lot better! But still extremely red, peeling excessively.

Used wipes to gently cleanse my face. I am still using the paraffin based cream. As the day progressed my eyes felt a lot better not so tender and no weeping, I am improving all the time and the redness starting to tone down slightly.

Tuesday 3rd February Looking even better still rather red.
Peeling like mad, cleansing and applying cream. Still slightly swollen.

Wednesday 4th February Peeling an awful lot kept on applying cream every two hours. Still red but starting to see signs of redness calming down.

Thursday 5th February Much better today started to use CCLIft serum & B’Time cream. Put some make up on my eyes, started to feel like myself, still peeling like mad.

Friday 6th February A week today – still very red at times but can make up my eyes and use mineral make up. I still need to cleanse and I am applying the B’time cream and the CCLift serum, although they are not really sinking in just laying on top, but still not bad for only one week.

Saturday 7th February Went out of the first time, still putting creams on every 4 hours, near enough back to normal but still covering up the redness. I am very impressed with the results so far, I really do look like I have had a face lift.

Only 7 days after her treatment – Anne’s face is firmer and lifted – and by the way is Anne is not smiling for the sake of consistency in the photographs!

Tips to make the next decade your best ever!

London: What will you be doing in 10 years’ time?

It’s easy to get stuck in the same old rut – here is a checklist designed to make the next decade your best yet

The start of the New Year is traditionally the time to take stock and review how our lives are going, but it is all too easy to have forgotten our resolutions by the time February comes. So the Careers Advice Service has joined forces with expert careers and life coach Carole Ann Rice to develop checklists of things to do before you reach the landmark birthdays of 30, 40 and 50.

The easy–to-follow tips are designed to encourage people to think about how they can realise their dreams and keep their lives on track, whatever age they turn in 2010.

Things to do before you are 30

Carole Ann says: “In your 20s you have your whole life ahead of you, but it is still important to make the most of your opportunities, so by the time you’re 30 you should have a clearer idea of your long-term goals. Aim to achieve one personal and one professional short term goal before the end of each year. Why not learn a new skill and widen your circle of friends by joining a local club or social group?”

· Take a moment to evaluate where you want to be in five years time by thinking about what makes you tick, for example do you prefer working by yourself or with a team? Think about the careers that will match your goals and vision of the future

· If you’re not sure about which career is for you, why not consider voluntary work to help inform your decision and boost your confidence?

· Get online to gain experience of the latest online gadgets and social media platforms. Use the internet to search for information, job hunt or network with colleagues, friends and family

· Take up a new hobby. Why not join a local hobby group or club to widen your circle of friends. You could even go from rookie to Ramsay by learning how to cook.

Things to do before you are 40:

Carole Ann adds: “As you approach you the big 4-0 the key is to keep things fresh. Why not take a course to make sure your basic skills are up to scratch? Perhaps you could take an IT course to make sure your skills are up to date or learn to handle your finances and start saving for a rainy day.”

· Review your personal and career goals. Jot down the skills you have and those you don’t have and work out how you can improve them. You never know you might find a skill you never realised you had

· Try to improve your leadership and managerial experience. Why not manage the office social committee or join your local neighbourhood watch group? The extra experience will boost your confidence and could really add value to your CV

· What about having a makeover or updating your wardrobe by taking a bag of old clothes down to the charity shop? Feeling good, refreshed and uncluttered will boost your confidence and will help you to make the right impression

Things to do before you are 50:

Carole Ann says: “Your 50s should be about making time for the things you want to do. I would advise people to try to achieve a work life balance that suits them. We might be working longer than we used to, but why not book a trip away and plan to see and do the things you’ve always wanted to or take a part time gardening course, you never know it might turn into a money-making hobby!”

· It’s never too early to think about your life after work. Perhaps consider flexible working hours to finally conquer the work/life balance

· Consider enrolling on a course that will update your skills. You never know it could earn you some money or it could even become a business

· Use your skills and experience to give something back to the local community. Why not take up voluntary work or help out at the local Parent/Teacher Association?

· Get online and try out the latest social media tools – why not have a go at tweeting or set up a profile on Facebook?

· Book that trip! Plan to see and do the things you’ve always wanted to, you never know you might be entitled to a month’s sabbatical. You deserve it after all!

The Careers Advice Service provides free, impartial and confidential advice for those interested in learning a new skill; who want to find information on different courses or help with finding out about funding options and ways to get started in a new career.

Avoid déjà vu dieting – watch this video

London: This coming year more and more of us are likely to make dieting our New Year’s resolution. However for many of us, this will be a ritual we are all too familiar with. Having tried dieting the year before and been unsuccessful, the process of losing weight and then gaining it is something us women struggle with on a regular basis.

Losing weight and keeping the weight off can give you a better quality of life, not only will you look fabulous in that dress, but the health benefits are astounding, reducing the risk of life threatening diseases such as type-2 diabetes and heart disease, two of the leading causes of death worldwide1.

With all the weight loss programmes and diets that Britons are attempting this New Year, it’s important to know what food and exercise combinations can help you lose weight – consequently reducing visceral fat. Visceral fat which surrounds vital organs in the abdomen can’t be seen or felt, but the metabolically active fat in unhealthy amounts can add to serious health problems.

Show date: Monday 4th January
Show time: 2:30pm

In this live WebTV show, David Haslam, chairman of the National Obesity Forum, and Terry Maguire, Pharmacist of Maguire Pharmacy, Belfast, explain what you can do to avoid the yo-yo dieting pattern and how to get rid of dangerous hidden fat. We also have Paula Keogh talking about her weight loss experiences with alli*. Submit your questions before hand or ask them live.

David Haslam, Terry Maguire and Paula Keogh join us live online at Live Web TV
on Monday 4th January at 2:30pm to discuss visceral fat and weight loss.

*alli is a weight loss aid for overweight adults with a BMI of 28 or over, designed to be used with a comprehensive support programme.

Man’s eyesight restored with his own stem cells

image

London: A 38-year-old-man has had his vision restored with stem cells after being blinded in an ammonia attack.

Russell Turnbull, 38, lost the sight in one eye in 1994 when he was squirted with ammonia after trying to stop a row on a bus in Newcastle.

He was left with Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency (LSCD), a painful condition which requires constant treatment.

The new treatment was developed by scientists at Newcastle University.Their method involves taking a small amount of stem cells from a patient’s good eye, cultivating them in a laboratory, and implanting them into the damaged cornea.

He was was treated at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) and is one of of eight patients who successfully underwent the treatment developed at the North East England Stem Cell Institute (NESCI).

It is hoped that the technique could eventually be rolled out into clinics.

Clinique La Prairie – inside the world’s most exclusive anti-ageing clinic

Featured

Montreux, Switzerland: For decades, the rich, famous and powerful have come to the Swiss town of Clarens, on Lake Geneva, in search of the elixir of youth.

Charlie Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich, King Ibnsaud of Saudia Arabia, Charles de Gaulle and even one Pope (Pope Pius Xll) are just a few of the world elite who have sampled rejuvenation from a serum created exclusively at the world-famous Clinique La Prairie.

Recently I followed in their footsteps to sample what CLP has to offer to today’s discerning client. In an era of advancing medical discoveries such as stem cells and the manipulation of DNA which make reversing ageing a real possibility, does Clinque La Prairie still live up to its reputation as a world’s leading medical spa?

My anti-ageing journey, began at Geneva Airport where I am met by one of the Clinque’s chauffeurs, holding a CLP board with my name on it. I am driven at high-speed along the motorway that skirts the edge of Lake Geneva in a black Mercedes. I pass the time during the 45-minute journey by trying to prise out any secrets of the celebrity patients from my Italian chauffeur, but he is no more revelatory than a Swiss Bank on client financial disclosure to Interpol.

CLP recently underwent a $40million renovation – the original building, the Alpine-style Residence, built in 1928; the Château, build in 1865 as a girls school and the Medical Centre – are now all linked to a new spa centre and reception.

Architecturally stunning – CPL’s Swiss owner, Armin Mattli, had the new complex designed by Jacques Richter and Ignacio Dahl Rocha – creators of the stunning Néstle HQ building in nearby Vevey – it is built into a hillside so it melts into hillside. Each floor of the building having access to the outside.

I am checked into the original building, Residence, which reminds me of an Austrian skiing chalet from the outside. But the bathroom is marble, the sheets are of the finest linen and the press of a button changes the position of my bed.
Montreux
The view from my balcony is spectacular. I look across classical Italianate ornamental gardens enveloped between the high mountains that surround this part of Lake Geneva. The view from the indoor pool also looks directly onto the mountains.

CLP first opened in 1931 offering patients its signature treatment, Revitalisation Therapy, an anti-ageing cocktail made of fresh animal cells. This cellular revitalisation therapy has since been refined and is now made only of fresh liver cells from fetal sheep.

These days CPL attracts a mostly European, Russian and Chinese clientele. During my two-day visit, most of the other guests were either Russians or Arabs taking those famous sheep extract shots, alongside cosmetic surgery and weight-loss packages.

The Clinique has a state-of-the art medical centre (pictured below) equipped to carry out the most sophisticated medical diagnostics including MRI, CT and ultrasound scans. The operating theatres carry out all kinds of procedures , including cosmetic surgery. As well as non-surgical aesthetics, it also specialises in the latest surgical hair replacement procedures.
Clinique La Prairie (New building)

There are 59 rooms, which can accommodate up to 100 guests and 200 staff, most of whom speak three languages. There are also some 60 consulting doctors, whose specialities range from cardiology and neurology to dermatology and cosmetic surgery.

Every patient at La Prairie undergoes a two day complete medical examination to check on current disorders and to pin point any risk factors such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic or cancerous problems and osteoporosis. It also includes detailed blood tests, genetic testing, an electrocardiogram, as well as a full dental examination.

Chief Physician, Thierry Wälli explains: “’We do routine tests such as for cholesterol and diabetes but our approach to every patient is individualised. It would be inconceivable for us to prescribe or administer care without understaking a thorough preliminary basic checkup.

““The majority of patients come to us in their mid-40s or 50s and they are probably thinking that they would like to stay as healthy as they are now or they are starting to feel the first symptoms of ageing: maybe they don’t recover from illnesses as quickly, or they feel tired all the time or they may just have a feeling that something is starting to go wrong.””

There are several kinds of packages on offer, mostly lasting six days, including Revitalisation, Beauty, Thalassomed, and Relaxation. Beauty therapy is also taken very seriously here.

La Prairie’s famous anti-wrinkle creams

And as you would expect staying at CLP does not come cheap. Revitalisation Therapy costs up to $25,000, £12,500, 26,000CH per person. But this does not bother the super-rich – I am told an Arab princess stayed here for a year to loose weight.

Dieting at La Prairie is virtually painless. Every patient gets a bespoke programme, with lunch and dinner served in an elegant restaurant. I meet with the dietician, Cynthia Oulevay, as part of my “Journalist’s Programme”.

She puts me on the “Menu Minimal”, some 1,200 calories. You would hardly think this was enough for any kind of gastronomic experience. But you would be wrong. Lunch and dinner are based on a form of “light” Cuisine Minceur. There is a menu with several choices and I pick three courses, which would not be out of place in a Michelin Star restaurant: Cream of San Marzano tomato soup with mint, Canadian Lobster with a light Bisque sauce with tomato, truffles and artichoke, Gold Kiwi Flan with yogurt, flavoured with vanilla.

Days are structured, with lunch and dinner served at specific times and if you are late you get a phone call reminder. You need an appointment to go to the gym. There is a bar but few guests imbibe and in any case it closes by 9pm, by which time most of the guests have gone to bed – as two Middle Eastern gentlemen discovered when they wanted a drink. I saw them later that evening sitting outside the brasserie of the Montreux Palace with large whiskies in hand.

Each morning begins with breakfast in your room at 8am. Mine is scrambled eggs and wholemeal bread, with tea. I can hardly believe it’s within the calorie count I am allowed!

Then I wander down to the Spa for my programme, in my robe. In the corridor I pass by cabinets of sparkling jewels and stop to look at the diamond studded dominos. There are gold and diamond watches and other fine jewels from the Haute Hologeries in Geneva. I am told at reception that they will come to the Clinique with a selection if there is something I require…

Large Pear Shaped diamond and two pear shaped Emeralds in necklace with white diamonds

tissot pocket watch stock# 034m

The spa is minimalist except for a four foot high brass Buddha. I have a body peel and chromotherm – an individual Turkish bath which bathes the body in seaweed, essential oils and mineral mud

I am also treated to a very special Ayurvedic massage from Alain, a pony-tailed yoga teacher, who has 38-years experience as a practitioner. He tells me he is a vegetarian so has not tried the sheep liver cocktail.

In the gym I get a check-up from François Victor, the Health Club Manager, who measures my BMI and other biomarkers. The bad news: he tells me that I only need 1,200 calories a day to stay the same weight and the good news: if I exercise I will build good muscle tone.

And so I retire to the pool where the heat makes me soporific .. I wonder where the other guests are as I am the only person there. I gaze out at the mountains and dream of treating myself later that evening to a glass of champagne!

The next morning its time for me to go. I depart feeling pampered and rested. True Clinique La Prairie offers rejuvenation at a vey high price but a price paying for your health wealth …

Revitalisation Therapy

CLP is best known for RT; injections of an extract from fetal sheep liver cells. The treatment dates from 1931, when the Clinique’s founder Professor Paul Niehans, injected calf parathyroid glands into a woman who was suffering from tetany (muscle spasms associated with deficient parathyroid secretions). She recovered and lived another 31 years and Niehans concluded that animal cells might alleviate other conditions.

In 1953 the Vatican summoned him to treat an ailing Pope Pius Xll. His success put the Clinique on the map and brought in the big name patients.

For the first 50 years, the extract was a cocktail of organs, but in 1987, the clinic began research to lend scientific credence to its claims. Its tests determined that liver cells were the most effective component, and in 1988, they became the basis for the CLP extract. The cells are taken from unborn sheep that are bred on the clinic’s own farm, and the extract is produced refined, and purified at its lab, under the supervision of the
Swiss public health authorities. It used to be given as a series of 14 injections, which meant most patients had to recover in bed. Today it is given as a drink and there are plans to turn it into a pill.

While CPL Extract was originally given to heal diseased organs, it’s now used to slow the overall ageing process. Promised results include renewed energy, less fatigue, heightened mental powers, and improved immune resistance.

Studies carried out at CLP’s Research Institute support these claims and have been published in medical journals such as Immunlogy and Experimental Cell Research.

The revitalisation treatments are meant to slow and reverse ageing, reverse mental decline and the symptoms of the menopause and andropause, which is why they are only given to people in middle age or older –not to anyone aged under 40.

Side effects are rare, and after being monitored for two hours in case of allergic reactions or anaphylactic shock patients are free to use the other services. Patients are encouraged to repeat the treatments every 18 months to two years and maintain the effects by eating well, exercising, not smoking, drinking moderately and managing stress.

I did not take the extract myself so I cannot say how it feels. In theory, at its most basic, the benefit of CLP-Extract, is that it kick starts the cells, giving them albeit temporarily, the characteristics of younger cells and boosting the immune system. So if I could afford it would I be revitalised – the answer is yes why not?

Spray away the years – ELIXIR trys the latest new age perfumes

If perception is indeed the only reality, then you can literally spray away the years.

According to Dr Lan Hirsch, Director of the Smell & Taste Tretment and Research Foundation in Chicago, it only takes a few sprays of a certain perfume to change someone’s perception of your age.

Dr Hirsch has spent more than 25 years researching the human sense of smell and creating blends of scents. His own invention Timeless View contains the anti-ageing smell of pink grapefruit, which he says particularly affects men’s perception of a woman’s age.

He advises misting yourself with a few sprays of the pleasant perfume to reduce anxiety and elevate a sense of well-being among men who smell it. “They will think you are more than six years younger than you are!” he says.

“The aroma appears to convince the male brain to take a more optimistic view of the physical attributes of women wearing it. Interestingly, it doesn’t work on women viewing men or on women with other women.

“The rejuvenation effect of the pink grapefuit aroma can be explained by considering the impact of odours on men’s visual perceptions and sexual arousal.”

The notion that perfumes can be anti-ageing, not just in terms of how they smell but also in the way they affect your skin, is a new trend being taken up by the big perfume companies.

An unusual product to hit the market, is Smiley by Arthes of France, which claims to be an anti-depressant perfume. The ingredients: phenylethylamine and theobromine work together to set off feelings of joy and excitment, while blocking the chemicals that trigger stress.

Shelagh Foyle, Perfumier at ‘young’ and ‘old’ is influenced by the decade in which you were born.

“I grew up in the era of youth products such as Brut and Charlie. I suspect neither of these would be seen as young fragrances if launched today. At the other end of the spectrum, lavender used to be for grandma, but today it is a keynote in baby care. The fruit and musk notes that are increasingly popular in modern perfumery tend to be associated with ‘inexpensive’ for those who remember Dewberry or White Musk from The Body Shop. This is not the case for today’s younger generation where the link is with celebrity fragrances.”

However some fragrances have an enduring quality, like Chanel No5 or Special No27 by Floris, and are used by every generation. Classic fragrances are ones that people ‘grow’ into. There is an analogy with wine where you start out with the lighter, fruitier varieties and, as your palate develops, you discover the joys of heavier, spicier, more intense vintages.

The most important factor with fragrance is that it is your choice and your taste that counts. Everyone is an individual – everyone has their own set of fragrance memoris that will invoke positive or negative emotions.

Daisy Silver Eau de Toilette by Marc Jacobs

A fresh fragrance with top notes of wild strawberry, violet leaves and ruby red grapefruit, modern vintage heart notes of violet, jasmine and gardenia with a smooth and sensual base of vanilla, musk and white woods.

Marc Jacobs’s new Daisy fragrance is meant to be “happy and youthful”, and “more accessible than the signature range” and “sophisticated but not too serious”. In other words, it’s meant to bring younger consumers into the Marc Jacobs fold. Although the target age is said to be 18-24 it does work well for most ages.

We loved the bottle too. Our verdict 7/10. Costs around £58 for 100ml.

White Tea Eau de Toilette by Berkeley Square Cosmetics

White Tea has top notes of fresh tea, lemon zest and gardenia add zest with base notes of Musk and Tonka Beans add pure indulgence. Although it harks back to a bygone age it is meant to eptimise the gay young things of the 1920s who danced the night away flapper style.

It was a time of dazzling high society; country house retreats all set to the swing of the Charleston and the dulcet tones of Gershwin and Cole Porter and for true lovers a nightingale singing in Berkeley Square. It’s often hailed as the most extravagant decade of the 20th century – so it’s no wonder Berkeley Square Cosmetics have dedicated a whole range of luxurious fragrance and bathing products in its honour.

New Tea – our verdict 7/10. Costs £12 for 50ml. Buy online at www.bsquare.co.uk. Also on sale at Fenwicks and Fortnum & Mason London.

Eau de Parfum No 2 “Vivacité(s) de Bach”

From the makers of the famous Bach herbal remedies, this is a perfume that lifts your spirits with positive energy

This invigorating fragrance will fill you with positive energy. Made with certified organic flower essences this perfume will bring joy, clarity and vitality. Featuring Top notes of Gorse and Gentian, Heart notes of White Chestnut, Olive and Hornbeam together with Base notes of Larch and Mustard.
The cheerful and spicy bouquet of Vivacité (s) promotes clarity and vitality by stimulating confidence, inner strength and a sense of purpose.

Our verdict 6/10. 100ml and 50ml natural sprays, RRP: £59.50 and £44.50 www.LesFleursDeBach.co.uk

Juliette has a Gun by Romano Ricci

Juliette has a Gun – is chic range of fragrances from Romano Ricci, of the French perfume dynasty Nina Ricci. Inspired by the Shakespearean heroine, ‘’Juliette has a Gun’’ is a series of romantic fragrances, with the essence of oils from the Bulgarian rose at its heart.

Lady Vengence is my personal favourite – it has a lovely but not overpowering fragrance made from the rose, with patchouli and vanilla which together become a feminine, sensual and sophisticated scent.

Miss Charming is a provocative femme-fatale with Moroccan Rose, musk and wild fruits. The packaging is also very special – black mock suede.

The creator of this new range Romano Ricci is only 29years old and learned perfumery secrets from his grandfather Robert Ricci. Young, fresh and sassy.

Our verdict on Lady Vengeance 9/10
Prices Lady Vengeance/Miss Charming: Available in 100ml £60.00 and 50ml £40.00. Available in exclusive stores – in the UK Selfridge’s London

ELIXIR tests the latest anti-ageing gadgets

ELIXIR’s experts look at the latest anti-ageing gadgets on the market

TRIPOLLAR STOP FOR FACE

The Tripollar Stop for the face is the first salon-grade radio-frequency anti-ageing skin device.

It works by using two kinds of radio (Tripollar Radio Frequency) frequencies to heat up the collagen under the skin. This has an immediate and visable tightening effect. Over the next few weeks it works on the fibroblasts in the epidermis which create new collagen and younger skin.

This gadget, uses mains power, and has a safety feature which shuts down when the skin has reached the optimum temperature – and turns on again when it has cooled down. The radio-frequency energy penetrates a mere 1-3mm and feels like a warm massage.

STOP has four metal “poles” which you hold against the skin. It is recommended mainly for facial, neck and decollete use – for lifting sagging jowels and chin, neck lines, facial wrinkles and marionette (nose to mouth) lines. And should be used 2-3 times a week until the desired effect has been achieved. It comes with a contact gel and after treatment anti-ageing cream.

STOP costs £175 there is also a body anti-cellulite and toning device, Tripollar Pose, priced at just £350it is a mini version of the in-salon ReGen treatment – to combat wrinkles and cellulite. The gadget is fairly affordable and would probably achieve optimum results after a few of the more powerful salon treatments.Click on this link for more information/or to buy STOP

We tested the facial Tripollar and we loved it. It’s small and easy to handle so you can pop it in your suitcase when you go away. It takes only a few minutes and is painless. It starts working from the first treatment. We loved this device. TEST RATING 9/10

ULTRATONE FACIAL PLUS

This handheld device for home use is about the size of a TV remote control and gives the face a muscle work-out using electrical stimulation.

It has fourprogrammes: Microcurrent – for deep penetration of moisturising creams, skin rejuvenation and fine line reduction ;Non-surgical facelift and tone – for exercising and lifting superficial medium and deep muscles; Lymphatic drainage & toxin release – for the reduction of puffiness and toxin elimination, to achieve a fresher and clear complexion and Anti-Ageing and maintenance – to enhance the results and ensure your face stays toned and looking good.

Each programme operates on a different frequency and within each programme there is a cocktail of currents that penetrate different depths and muscles via two metal contacts. There is a gel to create the contact and after treatment anti-wrinkle cream.

As with all the Ultratone devices, they also have uses in medical treatment. In the case of the Facial Plus it is used to treat Bell’s Palsy.

The microcurrent penetrates and rejuvenates the superficial layer of the skin, stimulating the fibroblasts that produce youth-promoting elastin and collagen.

The best results are obtained by using the unit little and often – say five minutes on each side of the face daily.

The anti-ageing programme gives the muscles of the face a thorough workout, moving everything upwards.

You have to follow a facial workout map – each muscle is worked on for about one minute – 25 impluses, then there is a beeb to indicate that you should now move to the next muscle area.

The lymphatic programme works for people who have facial puffiness – the current stimulates the lymph system and helps the skin to detox.

Ultratone has gathered medical evidence to support the efficacy of its devices, many of which are used in rehabilitative medicine. You have to persevere and use this device regularly to see a result but if you don’t like the thought of using Botox then its worth the effort. Our tester noticed increased firmness and improved skin tone after three weeks of use.

The Ultratone Facial Plus costs £149.00 and can be purchasd by phone 44 (0)207 935 0631. More information is online at www.ultratone.co.uk

HAIRMAX LASER COMB

A hand-held comb for home use for MEN/WOMEN who are worried about hairloss/hair condition. Powered by the mains, it comes with an adapter. It stimulates the circulation around hair follicles through low-level laser energy. Results vary on different people – as hair growth is different on everybody but it also makes hair thicker and shinier.

It is used every other day for around 15 minutes – its painless. It works at the root by improving blood circulation and encouraging the growth of new hair follicles. In medical trials in the US doctors found that around 90%+ of the participants had new hair growth and increased thickness. Results are usually seen within 8-16 weeks of treatment. It is the only non-drug treatment for hairloss that has been proven to work. The device has a 5-7 year lifespan. Normally costs around £245. Kit contains a worldwide power adapter, user manuel and instructional DVD.

What our male tester said: “I used it religiously every other day for 12 weeks. It was painless and simply left my head feeling warmed. I couldn’t see any difference at first but small baby hairs have started growing on areas which were completely hairless. I will need to use it for several more months before I know whether it is is really going to make a difference. But if the first results are anything to go by then it looks like I will at least have some improvement in my situation or at least will be able to stop hairloss with regular use.”

This is an extremely handy and versatile device that comes with several different heads so that it can be used on the face, body and hair.

It uses galvanic electrical energy – either positively or negatively to cleanse and then penetrate anti-ageing gels and cream deep into the skin.

Its easy to use and the device itself is small so good to take away in luggage. Its relatively expensive though at about £266 and the makers say you have to use their gels and creams to get the best results. A package of before and after gels costs £41 and there are other treatment products for the body and hair.

A very pleasant experience, skin seems to plump up straight away and it helps the areas that age first such as underneath the eyes.

MAXIMASQUE ANTI-AGEING SYSTEM

Although this device a Halloween masque it is one of the most popular beauty products in France. It’s also the favourite the glamorous former newsgirl Angela Rippon. The salon version is very popular in France.

As the skin ages it looses elasticity because of slower cell renewal process and lack of hydration. MaxiMasque moisturizes and hydrates your skin tissue by a process called “osmosis” – this means it helps the skin retain moisture. The masque takes 10 minutes to heat up electrically. The heat encourages water to penetrates into the deeper layer of the skin cells-(dermis), as a result the cell swell up, therefore tiny lines and wrinkles are plumped up on the surface of the skin, giving you instant and visible results.

Results from a clinical trial conducted by the prestigious Department of Dermatology at Amersham Hospital (Buckinghamshire NHS Trust) showed enhanced levels of hydration, increased skin softness and a significant reduction in wrinkles. Many found the experience of using the mask relaxing, soothing or therapeutic. Colour white On sale in Fenwicks/Harrods normally costs £39.99

Longer, sexier and younger hair – we test a new product from Michael van Clarke

image

London: 3’’ MORE INCHES is a new range of hair conditioning products from London crimper Michael van Clarke. It contains a combination of amino acids (proteins) which coat the hair, protecting it from the ravages of the ageing environment – sun, pollution, smoking and other hair products!

The new range includes a “hero” product – an intensive conditioning treatment that you use every other wash, before you wash(£27.50 for 500ml) a shampoo and conditioner (£16 each for 250ml). Michael worked on developing the new range with clients at his Marylebone, London Salon (pictured).

The critical difference between 3 More Inches range and other products on the market is that it does not contain silicones and polymers which Michael says coat the hair and make it dryer in the long term. 3 More Inches nourishes the hair shaft allowing even the most fragile hair to be grown longer and healthier.

Michael has a passion for his product and believes that having your hair cut just because you have reached the age of 40 is not necessary if you can keep your hair young looking, healthy and gorgeous.

ELIXIR Tried and Tested all three products and our verdict 9.9 out of 10. The shampoo and conditioner left our ageing hair soft as a baby’s! And the treatment gives your hair a super conditioning boost – great swing. They smell great and because of the superior quality ingredients,a little goes a long away.

Michael says: “From my experience over three decades the market has been looking at hair quality from a very narrow perspective. All I hear from various product suppliers for super healthy hair is to give it a cosmetic fix with a plastic or silicone laden product. A Faustian pact of clever shrink wrapping that whilst giving an attractive cosmetic appearance initially, can lead to brittleness over time, shortening life expectancy…

“Or take these pills and rub this snake oil into the scalp to titivate the follicle and problem solved, your hair will flow forth like an Amazonian Goddess. Well that’s just not the case. Sure, if someone is seriously ill their hair will tell. Or if they’re morbidly malnourished (super thin or super fat for that matter) taking some vitamin and mineral supplements is going to have a positive effect on the quality of hair coming out of the scalp.

“But for most of us, our hair starts out okay anyway – granted some more okay than others. It’s what the hair goes through once it’s birthed into daylight that makes the dramatic difference down the road between A-List and D-List. A piece of hair just 6 inches from the root has a life story all its own…

A year of sun, the sea, the colourants, the flat irons, the inept and aggressive blow-drying (who moi?… No? Maybe the idiot at the local salon who doesn’t know or doesn’t care), the one or two hundred washing cycles – all the taking out and just maybe not enough putting back to keep this amazingly strong but not indestructible protein matrix fed, nourished and protected.

That’s what 3’” more inches is addressing. That’s it’s raison d’être”.”

Michael Van Clarke’s new range of conditioning products – 3 More Inches – is available online at www.3moreinches.com and also at his salon at 1 Beaumont Street, London W1G 6DF. T: + 44 (0)20 7224 3123 Email salon@vanclarke.com.

Why an African herb could save you from swine flu and winter colds

image

London: An African herb, discovered in the last century, has been shown to cut the severity and length of illness in sufferers of flu and colds.

The herb, marketed by a German company, under the brand name Kaloba, has been tested in medical trials and proven to work. But the manufacturers admit they have yet to discover exactly how.

Kaloba, which comes in both tablet and liquid form, is made from an extract of the Pelargonium root. The medicine is already popular in Germany where it has been on the market for several years to treat illnesses of the upper respiratory tract such as the common cold, runny or blocked noses and coughs.

The makers recommend taking the product as soon as you feel unwell rather than taking it on a continuous basis. It has been approved by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency as a herbal medicine.

With long-standing use as a traditional herbal remedy, studies have also shown that Kaloba can help prevent secondary infections such as chronic bronchitis, which develop in around 1 in 20 people. Using Kaloba will not only reduce the severity of symptoms but also get you back to health quicker, say the makers.

Dr Mike Dixon, GP and chairman of the NHS Alliance says: “Kaloba holds a licence-based on 30 years of traditional use; however it is reassuring to see that Pelargonium – the ingredient within Kaloba® – also has numerous clinical studies to support its immune boosting, anti- viral and anti-bacterial benefits.”

Dr Dick Middleton, Technical Director at German manufacturer Schwabe adds: “When the time for taking preventative steps has passed, people want a treatment to help them get back to health as quickly as possible. When a cold strikes, Kaloba® is an effective medicine to relieve symptoms of infections such as the common cold.”

More information about the formula

Kaloba is available in new convenient tablet form for adults and children over 12. Kaloba should be taken at the first sign of infection. Kaloba tablets contain 20mg of Pelargonium sidoides root extract and are priced at £8.99 for 21 tablets. Dosage for adults and children over 12 years: one tablet three times daily.

Kaloba Liquid is available in easy to administer oral drops, which can be added to water or taken directly from a spoon. It is particularly suitable for children six years and over, for relieving the symptoms of coughs and colds that are so prevalent in childhood. Kaloba Liquid is priced at £7.99 for 20ml. Dosage for adults and children over 12 years: 30 drops orally, 3 times a day. Dosage in children six years and over: 20 drops orally, 3 times a day.

Turkish delight in Istanbul – the Ritz-Carlton Spa

by Avril O’Connor

There really is no other city like Istanbul. Uniquely straddling both Asia and Europe, it is frenetic melting pot of cultures and peoples. It is architecturally breathtaking with the greatest examples of Byzantine and Ottoman art and architecture anywhere in the world today.

At the same time it is a city undergoing an economic revival with entrepreneurs opening up trendy shops, bars and restaurants. It has one of the youngest populations of any city. In the numerous cafes you are more likely to find yourself sitting next to Prada-clad locals than anyone wearing a Fez.

So whether you want to marvel at some of the world’s greatest buildings or shop till you drop, Istanbul will have something wonderful and enchanting for you. Another reason to visit now is that Istanbul has been named European City of Culture next year – so get there before the crowds!

One of the most luxurious and romantic places to stay is the Ritz-Carlton Hotel right in the centre of the city. There are not many hotels where you can watch a giant supertanker pass by your bedroom window! And don’t be fooled by the skyscraper exterior, inside this hotel is seriously sumptuous. It is decorated in Ottoman-style splendor with service to match. All rooms have flat screen TV, broadband Wi-Fi internet access, Bulgari toiletries, huge marble bathrooms and terry bathrobes.

The Laveda Spa, offering both Western and Eastern therapies using Carita of Paris products is the best in the city. There is a spacious pool surrounded by Byzantine columns and a painted ceiling to recreate the Istanbul sky. You can try a Turkish Haman – a traditional ritual of exfoliation and cleansing with a total body wash, followed by a massage.

In summer the open air spa allows you to feel the gentle breezes while indulging in a massage or other therapy as you gaze across the Bosphorus. One particular sumptuous and relaxing treatment is the Sultans Royal Six Hands Massage which is carried out by three therapists. Beware this spa is so relaxing that you may not want to leave –  but it does have a poolside bar!
