Charles Eugster: the world’s fittest 91-year-old on spreading the Viagra-effect of exercise

London: When we meet Dr Charles Eugster, a former dentist, is wearing a stylish grey cashmere suit, with a white cotton shirt, complimented by a pink silk tie and matching pocket handkerchief. The suit doesn’t hang as it would on most men his age but fits perfectly on his trim and moderately defined muscular physique. He may be 91-years-old but unlike the majority of his contemporaries he has no superflous hair peeking from his nostrils or ears and has a decent haircut.

When I compliment him by telling him he looks 30 years younger than his real age – which he does. He responds by saying that he doesn’t need Viagra nowadays (not that he took it before). And as a once-divorced widower he is looking forward to his next internet date.  His last relationship was with a 72-year-old synchronised swimmer.

The secret to his youthfulness is not down to any cosmetic surgery. His “elixir of life” is exercise.  And not a punishing regime either – just 45 minutes, three times a week.

Charles October 2010 2.JPG  Charles in competition – October 2010

His workout, is based on building and retaining muscle mass.  The dramatic fall in muscle mass in older people, known as sacrophenia, is a major contributor to frailty among the elderly.  He lifts weights and combines this with resistance training and cardio workout through rowing.  His regime has not only changed his body shape – his weight has decreased from 85 to 65 kilos,  but has also boosted levels of his youth hormones. It is scientifically proven, that levels of Human Growth Hormone – the main youth hormone – are boosted through exercise.

A blood analysis has also revealed he has the profile of an athlete and an absence of the nasty substances that usually accompany ageing such as high levels of bad LDL cholesterol. His resting heart rate is also in the 50s which is near athletic.

He also claims that exercise has also had an interesting affect on the colour of his body hair. He tells me that his once grey pubic hairs have returned to their original colour – although Elixir clearly cannot testify to this!

He claims to be the fittest nonogenerian on the planet.  And looking around on the streets of the UK where woman are now the most obese in Europe – he may well be right.

BILD1192.jpgCharles Eugster brims over with enthusiasm for life and is now on a one-man mission to not only get older folks off their feet to take more exercise but also to reinvent themselves in new careers.

“After all”, he says, “they have another thirty years to live.” And he believes this is where “vanity” has a positive role. “I am vain and it has its place as a motivator.  If you want to stay young then act young – join a gym, be competitive and find a new job.”

Charles doesn’t take hormone replacement, or expensive supplements, or even count calories. He does have a personal trainer who advices on changes to his exercise regime so that his body is constantly challenged. He recently decided to target his derierre which his personal trainer says is now “firming up nicely”.

As far as diet goes, he eats lots of fruits, vegetables and porridge. He also he takes whey protein which helps build lean muscle, confesses to the odd glass of wine and drinks green tea.

There is no question that Charles is a role model for older people.  He “retired” as a dentist and publisher of a newsletter for dentists well past the usual retirement age at the age of 75. And has now embarked on a career to promote positive ageing.  He has his own website  www.charleseugster.net , is a prolific Tweeter and is also in the process of writing an “inspirational book” about ageing. He is also a “Fitness Ambassador” for  INJOY, a gym chain in Continental Europe aimed at babyboomers.

Born in England but now living in Zurich, Switzerland, Charles has an accent that is “cut glass” British. His wealthy parents sent him to St Pauls, the London public school which is where he learned to row.

The turning point for his health came in his 50s when he discovered varicose veins on his legs and was diagnosed with low blood. His doctor said he needed to take more exercise so he took up walking and then jogging

“To my surprise my first wife was not interested in sport at all so I tried to adapt to her lifestyle which was not good for me at all.” They later divorced and his second wife died tragically in a car crash in France.

At the age of 87, he decided to take up body building  to counter muscle loss.  Last year (2010) he won the Strenflex World Championship (an international fitness competition) in the over 80-age group with the highest number of points ever scored.  His winning performance featured 57 dips, 61 chin-ups, 50 push-ups and 48 abdominal crunches, each in 45 seconds!

Dr Eugster has won 31 International rowing Gold medals and added 5 more Gold’s at the recent World Masters Regatta in Canada.

He is a vehement supporter of the UK’s Government’s decision to phase out the Default Retirement Age (DRA). As a passionate evangelist for being fit in old age, he has clear views about making sure one has correctly provided for one’s later years and he points out that a healthier ‘old old’ population will make fewer demands on an exceptionally stretched health service.

Dr Eugster says:  “The aged are considered not only to be unproductive but to put an enormous strain on the health service. It is claimed that in the UK, services for the aged already cost £126 Billion or 60% of all social services.” He continues, “The blessings of work have been underestimated – those that work are statistically healthier and recover faster from illness. There is satisfaction in earning one’s keep.   The horror of retirement has also been underestimated – the prospect of no longer making a contribution to society, of loss of status, of loss of satisfaction of earning money and of slow mental and physical decline.

“The retirement age of 65 was first introduced at the turn of the century when life expectancy was 46.  In the meantime life expectancy has increased by about 74%, but retirement age has remained the same.  The enormous growth of the aged population has made the present pension system unaffordable.  An increase in retirement age and a reduced pension is politically difficult but would be made easier by encouraging work after retirement with training facilities with the object of learning a new profession or starting a new career- which could be full-time, part-time or temporary.”

Dr Eugster surmises:”It is absurd that we should spend about a third of our lives being unproductive and supported by other people’s children. The discovery of the enormous plasticity of the human body means that it is possible to rebuild one’s body and mental ability in old age through specific exercises and changes in diet.  This in turn cannot only prevent decline but can increase physical and mental powers.  Thus the possibility of work in old age together with fewer demands on the health services is feasible.”

And you only have to look at Charles to know that he is right.

Why Vitamin D is vital, explains leading expert

The winter is finally here! The weather is colder and the sun sets before most of us even leave the office. How do you know if you are getting enough vitamin D and how much should you consume?

Vitamin D.jpeg

Dr John Cuomo, Executive Director of Research and Development at USANA Health Sciences answers important questions on why this vitamin is so important to the optimum functioning of the human body:

What are the main functions of vitamin D in the body?

Vitamin D appears to have many functions in the body.  Every cell, regardless of where it is located has a vitamin D receptor.  This would indicate that vitamin D has multiple functions and the scientific evidence backs this up.  The best documentation of the importance of vitamin D is in bone health. Absorption and utilization of calcium appears to be a vitamin D controlled process. Other minerals including magnesium, boron and silicon may also depend on vitamin D to be absorbed and deposited into the bone matrix.  The RDA data for vitamin D is based solely on the function for uptake and utilization of minerals for bone health.  So while bone health, and prevention of osteoporosis is an extremely important function of vitamin D, it is part of what makes vitamin D important to your health.  There are numerous studies showing that Vitamin D is also essential for overall immune system function and for muscle strength.  Epidemiological studies also show links to glucose metabolism, cell proliferation, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, impaired muscle function, infection, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, some cancers and CVD.

What are the best natural sources?

One of the best ways to get vitamin D is to expose your skin to sunlight.  15  to 30 minutes of sun exposure between the peak hours of 10am-2pm will make thousands of IU of vitamin D. Just be careful not to burn.  Dietary sources are lower.  Some product such as milk and orange juice are fortified with vitamin D, but the dose is usually low and the form is different than from sun exposure.  Some fish also have vitamin D but the amounts vary significantly.

-Is the vitamin D in milk etc a chemically made version and, if so, does it differ (like vitamin e) from the natural source?

The story here is a little different than for vitamin E.  The form of vitamin D produced in skin naturally from sunlight is cholecalciferol or vitamin D3.  This is also the form used in most nutritiona
l supplements like USANA Vitamin D tablets.  Milk is fortified with vitamin D2 or ergocalciferol.  While it is naturally derived, it is not the same as the D3 that we produce naturally from sun exposure.  In addition there are several clinical studies on supplementation with D2 vs. D3, and it looks like D3 is more bioavailable, and a better choice.

What are the best ways to take vitamin D to ensure you’ve taken enough?

Dietary sources are not sufficient.  Even though milk, orange juice and fish do contain vitamin D, all of the data we have seen indicates that the vast majority of Americans are vitamin D deficient.  The two best ways to get the vitamin D you need are to get adequate sun exposure to exposed skin (without sun block) or to take a good vitamin D supplement.  In addition, the only good way to tell if you have adequate stores of vitamin D is to have a blood test run.  If your doctor asks for this test, be sure they measure the amount of 25-hydroxy vitamin D in plasma, and the amount should be 40 – 60 ng/mL.

Does sunscreen stop us absorbing vitamin D?

Yes. To make vitamin D in the skin, UV light must hit the skin directly.  Sunscreen effectively blocks this, and almost no vitamin D will be produced if you apply sunscreen.

-How often should vitamin D be taken?

A daily supplement of 200 to 500

IU of vitamin D.

Why is vitamin D important?

It supports healthy bones, immune function, muscle strength, glucose control, and may help prevent auto immune disease and heart disease.

Esther Rantzen’s tips on managing winter fuel bills

Following the recent fuel price hike from the Big Six energy companies, the Payments Council has teamed up with Esther Rantzen to help ease the additional pressures the cold season brings. They have produced a video and leaflet as part of the PayYOURway campaign to raise awareness around the different payment options which can help make life that little bit easier in winter.

images.jpeg

It is estimated that for every one per cent rise in energy bills, an extra 40,000 households fall into fuel poverty[1] , and over 3.5 million older people (in 2.8 million households) already live in fuel poverty in the UK[2].  Every year, more than 30,000 older people die from preventable causes over the winter months, and additional deaths from cold weather contribute to 1 in 20 of all fatalities each year.

Research from the Payments Council shows that UK over-65s could save hundreds of pounds by

taking advantage of money management measures – including simply changing the way they pay.

The research pointed towards many over 65s being savvier than their younger counterparts about some money management measures: with 79% knowledgeable of energy efficiency grants compared with just 57% of the overall population; and 87% having loft insulation compared with 71% of the overall population. However, there were several key areas identified where older people in particular could be saving money and hassle this winter, including internet and telephone banking, clearing bills by direct debit, checking they are on the best energy tariff and reclaiming money they have overpaid to utility companies.

The video features Esther Rantzen and Mark Bowerman from the Payments Council providing their advice on how to save money and ensure you can still manage your finances when the snow and ice makes it more difficult to get to the bank. www.payyourway.org.uk/resources

Could you save a life by becoming a bone marrow donor?

College student Amit Gupta has just under 28 days left to find a suitable bone marrow donor to combat the Leukemia threatening his life by getting people to get a cheek swab to test for compatibility at http://amitguptaneedsyou.com/

cheekswab.jpg

Because South Asians (Indians Pakistanis, Nepali etc.) are so sparsely represented in the donor pool a unique all-out drive has begun to beat the clock and the disease.

“Leukemia is a word no one wants to hear. It is a type of cancer that starts inside your bone marrow. Amit Gupta has it, and his survival is 30% to 35%. A bone marrow match would double his survival. people are severely under reported in the donor pool including other minorities. finding a perfect match are about one in 20,000. Amit has been using social media to get the word out and  reach potential donors. ” Dr.  Sanjay Gupta from CNN, USA.  http://on.cnn.com/sELFzT

The nature of Acute Leukemia is it’s swift and often unheralded, undiagnosed onset. Amit had been feeling worn out and was losing weight, and wasn’t sure why. After an exam and some lab work his doctor called and was brief, “Amit, you’ve got Acute Leukemia. You need to enter treatment right away.” Within hours he was hospitalized and the race had begun.

“I have a couple more months of chemo to go, then the next step is a bone marrow transplant. South Asians are severely under-represented in the bone marrow pool, and I need help,” Amit said.

Unlike blood transfusions, finding a genetic match for bone marrow that his body will accept is no easy task. The national bone marrow registry has 9.5 million records on file, yet the chances of someone from South Asian descent of finding a match are only 1 in 20,000.

Amit started the photo websites Photojojo and Jelly. Both sites have galvanized into action with “Swab for Amit” gatherings, making calls to South Asian clubs and putting out the word all over the Internet.

A few ways to help:

  1. If you’re South Asianget a free test by mail. You rub your cheeks with a cotton swab and mail it back. It’s easy.
  2. Anyone who is South Asian (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, or Sri Lanka), please point them to http://amitguptaneedsyou.com/

Students have organized a donor drive by contacting 100kcheeks@gmail.comThey sent kits, flyers, information and made the whole process easy. From NYC to San Francisco from the UK to India strangers are participating to help find a donor and save Amit’s life and eventually help others.

1 in 4 middleclass pensioners will work past 70

Nearly a quarter of middle class workers aged over 50 delaying retirement until they are at least seventy, according to new research from wealth managers Heartwood.

 elderlyman.jpg

The research further reveals that:

·         Almost two thirds expect to enter semi-retirement

·         Four in ten (41%) are planning to remain in work for an average of five years longer than they had originally planned.

·         Yet only 31% of retired people said they had been semi-retired and on average they were in semi-retirement for less than two years prior to leaving work for good.

·         33% of higher-earning semi-retirees said they couldn’t afford to while 18% blamed the higher cost of living

·         20% said they needed to keep working in order to support their children and 18% cited the fall in the value of their pension

The new study by Heartwood1 suggests that semi-retirement among wealthier people is becoming an increasingly necessary and complex life stage, with nearly a quarter (24%) of middle class workers aged over 50 delaying retirement until they are at least seventy. Almost two thirds (63%) expect to enter semi-retirement and four in ten (41%) are planning to remain in work for an average of five years longer than they had originally planned. This is a growing trend, as in contrast only 31% of retired people said they had been semi-retired and on average they were in semi-retirement for less than two years prior to leaving work for good.

It is expected that this movement will continue over the coming years, enhanced by the announcement this week that the default retirement age in the UK has now been fully abolished, making it easier for people to put off full retirement for longer.

For the majority, this is not driven by a love of their job but by concerns of their ability to fund their retirement. When asked why they were delaying full retirement, a third (33%) of higher-earning semi-retirees said they couldn’t afford to while 18% blamed the higher cost of living.  One in five (20%) said they needed to keep working in order to support their children and 18% cited the fall in the value of their pension.

Simon Lough, Chief Executive of Heartwood comments: “Longer periods of semi-retirement are increasingly becoming the norm amongst even wealthier people in their fifties and sixties. In many cases they are being faced with greater demands being placed on their pension pots, rises in the cost of living and unexpected financial commitments such as supporting their children for longer than they originally anticipated.

“Even compared to a year ago the number of semi-retired people has grown by 43% and we would expect this trend to continue as economic pressures force people into having to generate additional income for longer, making it more important than ever to start planning as early as possible.”

Heartwood offers retirement planning services, usually in parallel with investment management. These services cover the entirety of retirement planning and management from initial review and plan construction, through retirement and into ‘drawdown’2. Heartwood can provide advice on a range of pension scheme arrangements including SIPPs, SSASs, stakeholder and employer schemes, although the primary focus is on SIPP and SSAS arrangements.

For further information on Heartwood, visit www.heartwoodgroup.co.uk.

The figures quoted in this release are based on an independent survey conducted by ICM. A total of 830 adults aged 50 and over were interviewed.

2 Drawdown is a form of pension arrangement that allows you to take your maximum tax free cash at the outset and defer your annuity purchase.

Heartwood provides integrated investment, tax and retirement planning solutions for ultra high net worth and high net worth individuals from its offices in London and the South East. Heartwood now manages and administers over £1.3 bn of funds for clients.

Scientists replicate human tears in new eye formula

Dry or gritty-feeling eyes blight the lives of millions of people.  There are many causes including age, drugs, medical conditions, pollution and the environment. And as actressccc explains it can be down to bad habits such as leaving our makeup on when we go to bed.

However, a ground-breaking eye drop formula has now been scientifically proven to help tackle the problem. The secret of the new formula from Japan’s Rohto is a combination of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the human body which is responsible for keeping skin young and plump and lubricating joints, and polysaccharides in the tamarind plant.

Rohto® Dry Eye Relief is described as a natural bi-polymer which is trademarked as HydraMed and which has been shown in clinical trials to  rapidly relieve dry, gritty eye sensations. In addition it has been proven to improve the condition of the tear film and ocular surface, so that eyes feel far more comfortable within just a month of regular use.

Dry and gritty-feeling eyes are a major and growing healthcare problem and the condition is thought to affect up to 30% of the population  at some time.

Modern lifestyles and an aging population are largely responsible for the increase in dry eye symptoms. The contraceptive pill, underlying illnesses and health conditions as well as some medication can also trigger dry eyes. In healthy eyes, tears help create lubricating and cleaning film over the eye, and dry eyes occur when this film is inadequate in terms of quantity or composition when there is not enough fluid to adequately create this film. The goal when relieving the symptoms is to rehydrate the surface of the eye and recreate the tear film. A range of treatments are available but all too often these do not possess the ideal properties to address the symptoms and causes of dry eyes. Some products are too viscous (blurry and sticky) and others are too watery (don’t stay on the eye for long).

Rohto® Dry Eye Relief contains a unique biopolymer combination of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP). Both agents improve the stability of the tear film and reduce the symptoms associated with dry eye. However, when combined together, evidence shows that they act synergistically with greater water absorption than either ingredient alone. This maximises the all-important retention on the eye’s surface and gives excellent lubrication. These qualities enable the normalisation of the eye’s conjunctival mucus and the restoration of the stability of the tear film, bringing relief for dry eye symptoms.

Now a series of in-depth clinical trials and laboratory tests have shown just how effective Rohto® can be. In the first study , Rohto® was compared to an alternative tear substitute product. A total of 20 dry eye patients took either Rohto® Dry Eye Relief or the other product for 28 days. Analysis showed that volunteers treated with Rohto® had significantly more recovery from eye damage caused by dry eye.

In the second study , a randomised double-blind controlled trial, Rohto® Dry Eye Relief was compared with Optive® eye solution, an over-the-counter artificial tear product. A total of 48 male and female dry eye sufferers aged 24 to 82 in Italy took part in the three month study. One group used Rohto® and the other used Optive® over the 12 weeks, with both products used four times a day.

Of the Rohto® users, 78.3% had an improved ocular surface disease index – a gauge for eye surface damage – compared to 44% of the Optive® users. Furthermore, 95.7% of the Rohto® group reported that their symptoms had improved or disappeared altogether, compared to 80% of the Optive® patients. The results demonstrate that patients with moderate dry eye can be safely and effectively treated with Rohto® Dry Eye Relief monodose. The results also suggest that Rohto® is a tear substitute that is more effective than other dry eye relief products (Optive®) in improving the signs and symptoms of mild to moderate dry eye.

In the third study , Rohto® Dry Eye Relief was compared to hyaluronic acid based eye drops. A total of 22 people took part in the double blind trial over a 60-day period – half were given Rohto® and the other half HA-based eye drops. Rohto® was found to improve the condition of the eye surface by 56.5% overall, compared to just 8.7% for those using HA eye drops alone. It was up to five times more effective in treating damage than using HA alone.

Patients using Rohto® had significantly increased tear break-up time – an important marker of how stable the tear film is – rising from 4.1 seconds at the beginning of the treatment period to 6.2 seconds after a month of use. Eye comfort was also improved significantly, with symptoms of stinging and grittiness being reduced. After 60 days of Rohto® treatment, symptoms improved by 35% compared to 7.7% for those using HA eye drops alone. Damage to the eye in dry eye sufferers was reduced by 33.3% in the Rohto® group, compared to just a 5.3% improvement in the HA group.

In addition to the above studies, a fourth and final review was undertaken.   A total of 38 dry eye patients in nine optician practices in the UK used Rohto® Dry Eye Relief drops for up to four weeks. Symptoms of dryness, grittiness, itchiness and redness improved significantly following use of Rohto®, with average symptom frequency falling by as much as five times. Results also showed that soft contact lens wearers found greater comfort throughout the day following use of the preservative-free daily dose of Rohto® Dry Eye Relief.

Dry eye scientist, Dr Christine Purslow, says: “The problem of dry eyes is a growing one in the UK, down to a number of lifestyle and healthcare factors, not least because as a nation we are getting older. This means the proportion of people suffering age-related conditions – including dry eye – is increasing. However, there are also many other factors that can trigger the condition in younger people as well. Dry eye can be very unpleasant for sufferers, badly affecting work, family and social lives.”

“Dry eyes mean that the normal tear film production and lubricating of the eye is not functioning adequately, sometimes leading to intense discomfort and disturbed vision. The key goal for makers of dry eye treatments is to come up with drops that simulate as closely as possible the composition and effectiveness of the real tear film. This means that eye drops not only stay for as long as possible on the eye, but also have the right properties to allow proper mimicking of the natural tears during blinking to avoid blurred vision.”

“Rohto® Dry Eye Relief works in exactly this way and is an important step forward in the treatment of dry and gritty eyes. It has been scientifically shown to provide fast and effective relief. Because of Rohto Dry Eye Relief’s special formulation, it can last for a long time on the eye so greatly reducing the number of applications needed throughout the day to maintain comfort. Getting patients to comply with treatment is crucial; Rohto Dry Eye Relief has easy to use and re-sealable daily-dose vials that you can carry around, making re-application two or three times a day conveniently simple. Rohto Dry Eye Relief is a significant development for anyone who suffers from dry eyes.”Retouch Range cropped.jpg

More detail on Rohto® Dry Eye Relief
Rohto® Dry Eye Relief is a unique and novel addition in the fight against dry eyes. Its key component, HydraMed, is an advanced patented formulation of two active ingredients – Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which helps restore and retain hydration, and Tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP), which helps repair the surface of the eye. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring polymer normally found within the human eye. It has incredible water attracting properties and can draw 3,000 times  its own weight in water. This greatly reduces evaporation – and hence fluid loss from the eye. HA mimics the natural tear film in the eye, which is crucial for good eye health. The other key ingredient – Tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP) – is a naturally occurring muco-adhesive polymer that produces a visco-elastic solution and has a chemical structure similar to important proteins called mucins on the eye’s surface.

Rohto® Dry Eye Relief is unique because its key ingredients work together synergistically to provide an effect far greater than the sum of its two parts. The HydraMed formulation mimics the behaviour of natural human tears, becoming less viscous and sticky during a blink and more viscous between blinks – this allows easy blinking without stickiness. HydraMed’s excellent fluid – retaining properties mean that water loss from the tear film is minimised, so the formula stays on the eye for longer.

How tears work
Tears are secreted by special glands located around the eye. Tear fluid contains:
• water to provide moisture
• oils for lubrication
• mucus to facilitate even spreading of the tears across the surface of the eye
• antibodies and proteins for resistance to infection
• nutritional elements for the ocular surface

A moist, healthy eye surface is essential for normal vision. A sufficient quantity and quality of tears, as well as regular blinking, are among the requirements for a healthy eye surface. The production and drainage of tears is a continuous biological process. The tears drain down small openings near the inside corner of the eye and flow down into a channel called the tear duct into the nose.

The tear film is made up of three layers:
• The main middle watery layer. The watery fluid comes from the lachrimal gland just above the eye, near the eyebrow. Fluid drains into the upper part of the eyes. When you blink, the eyelid spreads the tears over the eye’s surface.

• The thin outer lipid (oily) layer. Tiny glands in the eyelids (meibomian glands) make a small amount of oily liquid, which forms the outer layer of the tear film. This layer helps to keep the tear film smooth and to reduce evaporation.

• The thin inner mucus layer. Cells of the conjunctiva at the front of the eye and inner part of the eyelids make a HEADSHOT cropped.jpgsmall amount of mucus. This allows the watery fluid to spread evenly over the surface of the eye.

Actresss Laura Tebbutt tells her story:

“I am an actress and hence busy juggling different jobs so that I can act. Like so many people and indeed my friends I’ve always been guilty of forgetting to replace my eye make-up, and I also tend not to take off my eye-make up at night. I just need my shut eye after a night out or finishing work late.My eyes have started to become unbearably itchy, sore and dry. I have been in and out of rehearsals; reading scripts etc and I thought this had caused my eyes to be dry. As a result, I have been fortunate enough to act as one of Rohto’s case study trialists. I have been diagnosed as having dry eyes and I have to say I know nothing about this condition, well I didn’t until I found out I had it. I have been using Rohto Dry Eye Relief for a month now and I have noticed a real difference with my eyes. My eyes feel so relieved and refreshed. The sore, gritty feeling has gone.”

Jemma reveals her beauty diet

jemmacropped.jpgIn an exclusive interview model, make up artist and beauty expert, Jemma Kidd discusses her beauty regime.

Recently appointed as a Beauty Ambassador for Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil Blend, she explains why she has been a fan of this special oil for many years:

How did you get started in the beauty industry?

I started out in the industry as a model, but I was never really comfortable – unlike my little sister Jodie! When I discovered what it was like being on the other end of the make-up brush, I knew I’d found the right career. I was lucky to work as an assistant to make-up supremo Mary Greenwell for five years then, in 1999, I was spotted by Premier Hair and Make Up Agency and taken on their books.  Since then I’ve worked with leading fashion designers, photographers and a host of prestigious magazines, including American and British Vogue, Vanity Fair and Elle. I also have a weekly beauty column in the Mail on Sunday’s YOU magazine.

In 2003, I founded an academy in London to train professional make-up artists that also offers a range of make-up workshops for women of all ages and have created three distinctive make-up ranges – Jemma Kidd Make Up School, Jemma Kidd PRO and JK Jemma Kidd – which are now sold throughout the UK and overseas.

You started your career as a model – what prompted you to switch to becoming a make-up artist?

I have always been creative and found myself watching the make-up artists backstage, wanting to know all of their secrets. I felt more at home behind the scenes than on the catwalk – the vibe, the buzz, the people – I just loved it. In retrospect, modelling was the best training I could have had. I learned from incredible artists, but I also know the feeling of having make-up applied badly

Why did you decide to start your own make-up school?

Establishing the Jemma Kidd Make Up School was an idea that came to me after a girl flew over from Deli to be taught by me for a week so that she could work in Bollywood. When I was a session make-up artist I used to get inundated with requests from friends to do their make-up and was constantly asked by mothers to show their daughters how to apply it correctly. I soon realised that millions of women wear make-up, but very few of them have been taught how to apply it and I felt that there was a need for a place where women could come and learn about make-up without the pressure to buy.

Nutritionists often quote the phrase: “Beauty comes from within”. Do you believe that nutrition can play an important role in how a person’s skin looks?

Absolutely! Good skincare and make-up can help improve the appearance of your complexion and help mask any problems, but healthy habits will make your skin glow naturally. I always try to eat well, drink lots of fresh fruit/veg juices, keep my intake of Omega 3 and 6 Essential Fatty Acids up, sleep for at least eight hours per night (which is incredibly difficult with twin toddlers!), try to improve my digestion, and party in moderation. I’m a firm believer that beauty really does come from within and that the key is a healthy gut.

When did you first become interested in nutrition?

Nutrition is an important part of looking good, so I have been researching and learning about it for a long time as a part of my work in the beauty world. I have had a few problems over the years with my digestive system and feeling exhausted all the time with so much travelling – I was drowning myself in teas, coffees, and sweet foods to try and get more energy. It wasn’t until I went to see a nutritionist that I realised what I was doing wouldn’t help, and that getting a healthy diet and taking the correct vitamins and supplements would make me feel so much better. She was right of course! Now I only eat foods that suit my body and the change is extraordinary – I feel like a new person. All it took was cutting out a few foods and taking a few supplements.

We aren’t taught very much about nutrition in schools these days. At your Make Up School do you ever see women with dry skin conditions who are trying to mask this rather than tackle the causes?  What advice do you tend to offer them?

One of the most common mistakes I see at the Academy is women attempting to apply make-up to dehydrated skin. It’s hugely important to create an even complexion before applying colour products so that skin doesn’t end up looking blotchy. In terms of skincare, I advise taking time to prep skin thoroughly – moisturise well and use a hydrating serum under foundation, which will act as a barrier against water loss. I also suggest opting for liquid and crème formulas as opposed to powders which can draw attention to any dry or flaky patches.  Of course it’s also vital to tackle the root cause of dehydration by drinking lots of fluids throughout the day and Udo’s Oil is a big help here keeping skin moisturised from the inside.  If I feel it’s a deeper problem, I advise them to see a nutritionist.

What are the key messages you try to convey to your students at the Make Up School with regards to beauty?

Make-up shouldn’t be used as a mask – it’s more of an enhancer. Good skin comes from within, so what we put in our bodies is reflected in how we look. We teach our students how to handle problem skin and how to enhance their complexions with the power of make-up tips and techniques.

Have you always been interested in natural products?

I’m a huge believer in natural products, even more so now that I’ve had kids. I feed them and my husband the most natural organic foods I can, and I only use organic natural shampoos, body creams, suncreams, nappy creams and toothpastes. I also use homeopathy for problems like teething, irritability and colds.

When did you first hear about Udo’s Oil and how were you introduced to it?

“Now I can use make up to enhance my features rather than mask them”

When you research and read about achieving perfect skin (which is one of my quests in life!), one thing that comes back time and time again is that it is essential to have a good source of Omega-3, 6 and 9. This was where I came across Udo’s, as it’s the most effective way to get all three.   I found it in my local independent health food store and once I started taking it, I could feel and see an improvement almost instantly – not only in my skin, but also in my hair and nails.  I rarely get skin blemishes now and my concealer has virtually been made redundant!  Now I can use make up to enhance my features rather than mask them.

How do you take Udo’s Oil?

I put it on a salad at lunch, or in a fruit/veg juice in the morning. If I’m in a hurry, I mix it with apple juice and down it!

You are a new mum – has Udo’s Oil helped you in any way?

I give my babies a small amount most days, as I want to give them the best start in life and Udo’s Oil will help their development. Having babies puts a huge amount of pressure on your body and I felt depleted after giving birth. I completely came off any diet and ate whatever my body craved. And the one thing I really craved (other than bucket-loads of pasta!) was Udo’s Oil. I think that shows how much my body needed it.

Omega 3 and 6 are depleted in mums as they have to share them with their growing baby and this can lead to dry skin, stretch marks and low energy.  This continues after birth if breastfeeding too so Udo’s Oil is great for boosting the amount of Omegas for both mum and child.

What has been your career highlight to date?

Right from the start of my career it was always my dream to create a make-up line, so launching the Jemma Kidd Make Up School range was a huge achievement. I spent months developing each single eyeshadow colour to make sure they were perfect – it became my complete passion.

What ambitions do you still have for you and for your Make Up School?

I have so many ideas and passions I want to fulfil, starting a foundation to help educate under-privileged children is one. We’re always looking to expand the Jemma Kidd Make Up School brand and bring it to new audiences and markets across the world. At the moment, all my energy is focused on our latest venture called Jemma Kidd masterclass@HOME, which aims to bring the professional step-by-step tuition available at the Jemma Kidd Make Up School to people’s homes nationwide.

Move to create common diagnosis for Alzheimer’s

Brain with Alzheimers.jpgParis: Two studies to help establish an internationally consistent approach to detecting Alzheimer’s disease have been reported at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2011 in Paris.

The research, focusing on biomarkers – telltale biological indicators of Alzheimer’s – could help standardise the detection of the disease and increase the accuracy of clinical trials by ensuring those most likely to benefit from drugs or preventions take part.

The first study examined the association between a well-established Alzheimer’s risk gene – APOE4 – age, and a hallmark protein in Alzheimer’s – amyloid – to test the consistency of the relationship across ethnic groups. Led by researchers from Japan, the study took data from three different national populations – the US, Australia and Japan – all three of which include people with Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment and normal individuals.

The team evaluated the influence of the APOE4 risk gene and age on the build up of amyloid in the brain, measured by PET scans. Amongst the three populations, the researchers observed consistency in the way amyloid build-up was affected by the risk gene and age, showing the biomarkers to be consistent across different ethnic groups – crucial for a test to be internationally applicable.

A second study concentrated on the hippocampus, responsible for the formation of new memories and usually the first area of the brain to be affected by Alzheimer’s. MRI scans have become increasingly important in tracking shrinkage in this area of the brain, which can be useful for diagnosis and measuring disease progress.

Researchers in Italy have been examining and compiling the different approaches to MRI scanning used in worldwide dementia research to measuring volume changes in the hippocampus. The team’s next step is to review the different approaches and draw on the input of an international panel of experts to determine a common protocol.

Dr Simon Ridley, Head of Research at the UK‘s leading dementia research charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “If we are to effectively test new treatments or preventions, we have to be able detect Alzheimer’s early to get people involved in trials who stand to benefit most. An approach to detection that works consistently across the world is crucial to the global effort to defeat dementia and work towards that goal is to be welcomed.

“Numbers or people living with dementia are spiralling towards a million in the UK alone; research is the only answer to defeating the condition. Investment across all areas of dementia research – diagnosis, prevention and treatment – is urgently needed”.

Cherie Lunghi on her battle with joint pain

For men of a certain age Cherie Lunghi ranks as almost the perfect woman, writes Jon Guy.  An English rose with a dash of Italian she has been one of the most successful British actresses over the past 30 years.

Cheriedancing.jpgCherie on Strictly Come Dancing

Talk to a man and depending on how old they are, say the name Cherie Lunghi and you will either get a wistful hark back to her role as Guinevere in the film Excalibur in 1981 or those slightly younger will remember her as Gabriella Benson, the star of Channel Four‘s The Manageress, in which she played the first female football manager of a professional football team in a critically acclaimed drama. More recently she has starred in a series of adverts of a well known coffee.

Far be it from me to reveal her age, you’ll have to go on Google for that, but when you meet here face-to-face she does not look anything like that number and maintains a slim figure and a sparkle in her eyes.

CherieasStephanie.jpgShe does however take her health seriously and has suffered from back pain for some years hence why she was happy to meet me at the launch of new research by Regenovex. into the issue of joint pain and ticking time bomb it will be for the population as many ignore joint care until they feel the pain and the long term damage is done. It was the same for Cheri.

“I had always been active and thought little about my joints until one day when I was simply moving a box and suddenly my back went into spasm,” she explains. “It was agony and I suddenly realised I had a problem.”

She is a firm believer that for best results people need to start actively caring for their joints before they become problems.

“I was an actress and as such I spent hours onset and then headed out in the evening came home had a few hours sleep and was back on the set. My body put up with a lot and as I got older I suppose it suddenly said ‘I’ve done what I can but need to slow down’ and people need to look at their joints and how to protect them from a far earlier age. I do not think anyone really thinks about the problems they might have with their joints until they actually start to feel pain. But if we care for our joints when we are younger there is far more chance we can keep them in better shape.

‘I take the Regenovex capsules daily’ says Cherie. ‘After three weeks of taking them I noticed it working. I also use the Regenovex Patches, a flexible patch that lasts for up to 12 hours. ‘I find Regenovex invaluable as when I get that sore feeling in my back I can stick on one of the Regenovex patches and leave it there overnight – when I wake up in the morning the pain has disappeared. Any ingredient which can help
with my joint health is worth a lot.”

Regenovex is a range of joint care products especially rich in omega 3 from natural marine Bionovex Oil(R) and Hyaluronic acid, to maintain joint health. Bionovex Oil(R) is produced from a unique proprietary extraction process resulting in a high quality oil and the concentration of ETA is up to 40 times greater than in conventional green lipped mussel extracts. www.regenovex.co.uk

Joint care is one thing but Cherie says that other areas of her life have also changed as she grows older.

“I rarely drink now if at all,” she explained. “The days when there were always bottles of wine in the fridge are gone. I will still go out at night but I will not drink and I will ensure that I am back at a reasonable time.

“I look at my diet and in many ways just recognise that I need to give something back to my body after the years it has given to me without any real complaint.”

She says she continue sot enjoy acting and relishes the chance to do live theatre but for this fan of her role in the Manageress there was one big let down.

Her character was the ideal woman for many men, not only attractive but with an expert knowledge of football.

“I have to admit I know nothing about football,” she admits. “I didn’t at the time and I had to spend three days with a former professional footballer who took me round a club and gave me a master class on what I needed to know. I am an actress so I suppose my role is to make the character believable.”

Elixir of life drug found on Easter Island

New York: A drug has been discovered on one of the remotest places on earth andwhich scientists believe can reverse the effects of premature ageing and could extend human life by more than a decade.Researchers are looking at ways to market the drug.
FotoliaEasterIsland.jpg

Rapamycin, which is being called the “forever young” drug, was created from a chemical found in the soil on Easter Island, 2,000 miles off the coast of Chile in the Pacific Ocean.

The drug is already used to supress the immune system, thereby assisting organ transplants. It was used in experiments on children suffering from Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS), a rare genetic condition in which ageing is hyper-accelerated and sufferers die at around 12 years.

HGPS causes a dangerous process whereby a protein called progerin builds up in every cell of the body, causing them to age prematurely, according to a report in the medical journalScience Translational Medicine.

Rapamycin cleaned the cells of progerin and left healthy cells.

Researchers in the US are expected to start looking at whether the drug could be used more widely, after similarities between HGPS and the normal ageing process were uncovered.

Dimitri Krainc, co-author of the study, said: “Even a small activation of this ‘debris removal’ system would extend the health and life-span of our cells and organs.”

Scientific breakthrough in skin ageing from Vichy

London:A new scientific discovery, the fruit of 10 years research into understanding skin ageing, has resulted in the creation of a new generation cream.

Vichy LiftActiv Derm Source the skin cream that has been dubbed by the press as a ‘wrinkle cream first’ targeting the skin’s ageing process went on sale in Britain last week, following a wave of media and consumer interest in the product ever since scientific research on its breakthrough formulation was revealed at the beginning of the year.

femme_liftactiv.jpgThe breakthrough, backed by rigorous scientific testing and independent analysis, with the findings published in various medical journals such as PLoS ONE*, has seen scientists identify the key role of papillary fibroblasts in the Derm Source (also known as the papillary dermis), in the production of collagen fibres which keep the skin plump and elastic.

Taking its lead from the expert and scientific methodologies used in the pharmaceutical industry, researcher’s trialled 50 different compounds to identify the most effective ingredient to specifically target the Derm Source and actively stimulate the production of collagen fibres and through this testing, identified Rhamnose, a derivative of the Silver Birch Tree and Cat’s Claw (Uncaria) as the clear winner.

The product containing this active ingredient is called LiftActiv Derm Source by Vichy. It has been tested on 800 women, 40% of which have sensitive skin and there have been 6 clinical tests carried out plus 2 in vivo studies.

Dermatologists found a measurable decrease in the five leading types of wrinkles in the areas tested (face and neck).

The anti-ageing super-smoothie

Scientists have identified a cocktail of “anti-ageing fruits” for the ultimate in healthy smoothies.

The scientists in France created a recipe of seven health-boosting fruit juices which together cut the risk of heart disease, stroke and increase lifespan.

Fotolia_25314964_XS.jpgThe super smoothie contains grapejuice, blueberries, strawberries, apple, lingonberry, acerola and aronia. The ones which contain the highest amounts of superfoods are the cowberry (aka lingonberry) – a tart, red fruit related to the cranberry – and acerola, a red cherry-like fruit that has 30 times more vitamin C than orange juice.
The final ingredient of the smoothie is aronia, or chokeberry, an American blackberry once described as the ‘healthiest berry in the world’.

Nutrionists already know that fruits contain compounds known as polyphenols which protect the heart and help prevent clogged arteries.

In animal tests, pig heart artery walls relaxed when they were exposed to the fruit juice cocktail. The researchers, from the University of Strasbourg, say that in a human, this would boost the flow of blood to the heart and ensure it got a healthy balance of nutrients and oxygen.

The team – who report their findings in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Food and Function – also measured the antioxidant ability of different recipes to neutralise harmful molecules in the body that can damage DNA and cells.
The study found that some polyphenols were more potent than others – and that their ability to mop up harmful ‘free radicals’ that can damage DNA and cells was more important than the amount of polyphenols in each fruit.

To make the super smoothie you will need the following:

126ml grape juice (30 grapes)

20ml blueberry puree (15 blueberries)

20ml apple (half an apple)

10ml lingonberry juice (8 ligonberries)

8ml acerola juice (5 acerola berries)

8ml aronia juice (5 chokeberries)

One in four UK children will live to 100

London: More than a quarter of all children living in Britain today will become centenarians, according to new UK government statistics.

children.jpgThis means that of the 4 million children now aged 16 and under, 3.3million (27 per cent) will celebrate their 100th birthday.Across all age groups there is a one in six change of reaching 100.

A 16-year-old boy is expected to live until he is nearly 88, while a girl of the same age will reach 91. Around 900,000 future ‘centenarians’ are pensioners over 65.
Nearly 10 per cent of people over 65 will get to 100, rising to 12.3 per cent of people aged 51 to 65 and 18.5 per cent of people aged 17 to 50.

The figures are a worry for pension providers including the UK state pension. One proposal being considered is that the age will continue to go up whenever official life expectancy forecasts are increased.

It also raises anotehr issue of millions of people surviving until their 100th birthday with a dwindling income and poor health.

Weightloss boosts memory, says new study

New York: Weightloss boosts memory, according to a new study from Kent State University in Ohio.

Tests were carried out on 150 volunteers who weighed 21 stone plus and these were compared with healthy people.

In many of the tests the scores of a quarter of the obese participants were so low they were considered learning disabled.

Following the tests, two thirds of them has gastric by-pass surgery and lost an average of 3st. 8lb. And after 12 weeks took the same tests again.

In the group who had lost weight, the scores involving memory had been boosted, as well as improvements in organisational skills.

The results of 41 volunteers who declined obesity surgery declined further.

The researchers discovered, by using magnetic resonance imaging of the brain that obese people appeared to have damage to the organis substances around the nerve fibres responsible for chemical brainmemory.jpgmessage communications.

Can early-stage Alzheimer’s be detected in brain scans?

Alzheimers.jpgThining of the cerebral cortex, which can happen a decade or more before any symptoms of the debilitating disease, shows up in magnetic resonance scanning. This means more can be done to halt the progress of the disease because it has been spotted at an earlier stage when less damage has occured to the brain.

Current statistics reveal that One in three over-65s will die with dementia. And although there are no clinical tests available for early stage detection, brain shrinkage might indicate early changes in the brain and predict who might get the disease.

US researchers behind the new study say magnetic resonance (MR) scanning is not yet ready to use in diagnosing Alzheimer’s, but the findings bring the prospect closer.

Although existing drugs can slow progression of Alzheimer’s, there is no cure. For the study, researchers used MR scans in people in their 70s with no signs of Alzheimer’s.

They found the risk of developing  the illness was three times greater in those with the thinnest areas of the cerebral cortex area, which plays a key role in memory, compared with those who had above-average thickness. Those with most thinning of the brain also succumbed to the disease faster than people with average thickness, says a report in the medical journal Neurology.
