Hair Wonder – new products to halt hair loss

As the editor of a magazine totally devoted to anti-ageing you would think I would know enough not to mess around with my hormones. Well I have to confess that is exactly what I did, albeit with a little bit of advice from an anti-ageing doctor.  And with bad consequences – two thirds of my hair fell out.

How did this happen you may ask?  Well in common with many woman of a certain age I started to suffer sub-optimal levels of the metabolism controlling hormone made by the thyroid gland but with no particular symptoms. But after a girlfriend, who had none of the symptoms either – she was slim and full of energy – I decided to take a blood test with my GP.  It confirmed that I was indeed short of the hormone and that I should supplement with thyroxine – first a small dose of 0.25mg and then 0.50 mg.
So I supplemented by taking the tiniest of pills first thing in the morning for several years.  Then in a conversation in Harley Street with an anti-ageing doctor,  I was advised to take a freely available supplement called Potassium Iodide – which can be bought on the net. So I started taking this for several months instead of my thyroxine. What I did know was that Potassium Iodide is the supplement you are advised to take if there is a nuclear blast as it protects the thyroid gland from radiation.  Added to which you are only supposed to take it short term as a build up is ‘toxic’.  I did notice after a month or so that I had a metallic taste in my mouth, that the skin on my back felt rough, I was getting strange spots on my face, my neck was swollen and I was having difficulty swallowing – but thought these were symptoms of hypochondria. I later discovered that these were symptoms of ‘toxicity’.
It was only when I ran out of the supplement and didn’t replace it with thyroxine that I suddenly noticed large amounts of hair in the bath plug hole, then all around my home and also it was coming out in handfuls and I was starting to see my scalp! And I had really thick hair which hairdressers always used to comment on….
So I turned to the internet for more information.  And concluded that my sudden hair loss was a symptom of one of the following:
  • Too much testosterone – which meant I was turning into a man and suffering from male-pattern baldness.  This was the worst possible scenario because then it never grows back!
  • It was stress-induced.  That was a possibility and had happened once before.
  • My thyroid was in need of thyroxine to help it function properly and hair loss – albeit temporary was a symptom.
I concluded that my lack of thyroxine was to blame and started taking my tablets again and paid a visit to my GP for a blood test just in case there was something else. I also started eating all the things that help promote hair growth such as fish oils, selenium and tocotrienol (vitamin E).
So what was I to do about my hair disaster while waiting for the thyroxine levels to build up and my hair to grow back which would take several months?
It was suggested that I try hair loss products.  But being sceptical – we have all seen men with those spray on colour thickeners – which sprays the scalp as well as the hair. But I was to learn that there are lots of new products nowr with ingredients that can really help you make the most of your hair when you need to.
anti-hairloss_assortment.jpg
I tried the range from Hair Wonder which is aimed at halting hair loss caused by the menopause and stress, and contains phytokeratin to strengthen the hair and provitamin B5 to add shine.  The range includes shampoos, conditioners and a hair follicle boosting lotion and  a hair thickener.
Surprisingly the one product I thought would be terrible was the one I most recommend –  the hair thickener!  Expecting to end up with hair that looked dull, lifeless and weighed down by the product, I could not have been more wrong.
Hair Wonder’ Henna Plus Fluid Hair Volumiser contains a range of ingredients that add volumn and strength to the hair without making it sticky, including henna, organic extracts and phyto keratin.  After washing your hair your spray it on and then blow dry.  And it does make a difference – OK you don’t get your hair back instantly but it does look and feel a whole lot better.
The Anti-Hair Loss Lotion is also a great product because its applied directly to the scalp to stop further hair loss occuring. Trials in France revealed that it can increase hair growth by 25% in just four days.
The gloss shampoo is gentle and contains amino acids, Red ginseng and biotin to promote healthy hair follicles and gloss.
Whilst I realise that hair loss is often a symptom of a health issue that cannot always be sorted with a topical product, the range of Hair Wonder products does not contain any of the harsh ingredients that can make hair condition worse. It does help to give body, volume and shine which is a big step in the right direction when hair loss can be very distressing.  And they are not being sold at the rip-off prices.
I can only speak for my hair which is on the road to recovery – with a little help!
The anti-hair loss shampoo costs £9.99 (200ml), the hair lotion £16.99 (75ml) and the hair thickener £7.99 (150ml). There are several other products in the range.  Buy at www.naturalorigin.com

Raise money for men’s health charity – banish the grey!

home_logo.gifLondon: Banish grey for a day and raise money for the UK men’s health campaigners, The Prostate Cancer Charity.

The old adage ‘you’re only as old as you feel’ might be a nice thought, but unfortunately our looks often let us down. With life sometimes becoming grey, dull and mundane, an injection of colour is just what’s needed to stop the tedium setting in. Offering just such a solution is Grey-Away Day.

Whereas women are very vocal about ‘refreshing’ their looks, men tend to shy away from physical self-improvement (or at least they are more bashful about it!). But all that is set to change thanks to Grey-Away Day, an initiative just for men, that will encourage men across the country to banish their grey and lead a more colourful life.

The campaign will give men a better reason than ever to colour their hair. In the run up to Grey-Away Day (September 24th) men will be encouraged to seek sponsorship from their friends, family and work colleagues to return their hair to its natural colour, and in the process 20p from all boxes of Just For Men sold during September will be donated to The Prostate Cancer Charity, the UK’s leading charity working with people affected by the disease.

With over 25 million men in the UK and 28% sporting significant grey hair, it is about time men took on the challenge to look as young as they feel. With 2 million boxes of Just For Men hair colourant sold in the UK, there is already a large following, and this campaign hopes to encourage men to reach for the bottle to embrace a fresher look and reveal the person they feel they are.

Grey hair is No 1 looks worry for men

greyhair1.jpgLondon: Hair colour is the number one appearance concern for men today, according to a new UK study.

Research from Mintel reveals as many as one in two British men are worried about graying hair, with the largest concern coming from those aged over 45.

Vivienne Rudd, head of beauty research at Mintel, said the research said many men are “unhappy with their new found gravitas and the research has discovered men have become less content with their appearance after the age of 45.

“Whilst men are expected to work into an older age, they will find themselves competing with younger colleagues’, and she believes older people may feel the need to maintain their appearance.

The research which examined the performance of male grooming products shows there has been a slight increase in sales since 2008, and haircare shows the most significant growth with an estimated sales value of £68m in the UK in 2010.

The growing concern over appearance may lead to a future boost to the male grooming market according to Rudd, and L’Oreal has also reported a positive start for its Excell 5 Brush-in Men’s Hair Colourant in 2010 thus far.

However, whilst there is increased concern over appearance amongst middle-aged men, there is still a lack of interest in grooming products. Whilst young men are valuable to the market, middle aged men adopt a ‘quick-fix’ approach.

Another recent study shows that – men in general are more likely to purchase a product projecting a ‘no-nonsense’ image, with multi use and combination products also likely to be more popular.

Whilst the men’s concern over hair colour seems apparent in the UK, the rest of Europe does not share this worry. France, Germany and the UK continue to dominate the market in terms of hair products (according to Mintel GNPD), however of all the new hair colourants introduced exclusively for men last year, all were launched in the UK.

Mintel studies show that whilst men are not necessarily uninterested in the results of male grooming products, they are hesitant to purchase and use them. Three quarters of all men in the UK are unengaged with toiletries and grooming products, whilst over half of those are aged 45-54.

Other results from the study revealed hair loss and thinning are the second largest concerns for men, followed by unwanted hair. Being overweight, and oral hygiene make up the biggest concerns, although Mintel was keen to highlight skin care as a growing concern. Its study found that seven in ten men worry about some aspect of their skin whilst a third of men regularly use face creams and lotions.

Longer, sexier and younger hair – we test a new product from Michael van Clarke

London: 3’’ MORE INCHES is a new range of hair conditioning products from London crimper Michael van Clarke. It contains a combination of amino acids (proteins) which coat the hair, protecting it from the ravages of the ageing environment – sun, pollution, smoking and other hair products!

The new range includes a “hero” product – an intensive conditioning treatment that you use every other wash, before you wash(£27.50 for 500ml) a shampoo and conditioner (£16 each for 250ml). Michael worked on developing the new range with clients at his Marylebone, London Salon (pictured).

The critical difference between 3 More Inches range and other products on the market is that it does not contain silicones and polymers which Michael says coat the hair and make it dryer in the long term. 3 More Inches nourishes the hair shaft allowing even the most fragile hair to be grown longer and healthier.

Michael has a passion for his product and believes that having your hair cut just because you have reached the age of 40 is not necessary if you can keep your hair young looking, healthy and gorgeous.

ELIXIR Tried and Tested all three products and our verdict 9.9 out of 10. The shampoo and conditioner left our ageing hair soft as a baby’s! And the treatment gives your hair a super conditioning boost – great swing. They smell great and because of the superior quality ingredients,a little goes a long away.

Michael says: “From my experience over three decades the market has been looking at hair quality from a very narrow perspective. All I hear from various product suppliers for super healthy hair is to give it a cosmetic fix with a plastic or silicone laden product. A Faustian pact of clever shrink wrapping that whilst giving an attractive cosmetic appearance initially, can lead to brittleness over time, shortening life expectancy…

“Or take these pills and rub this snake oil into the scalp to titivate the follicle and problem solved, your hair will flow forth like an Amazonian Goddess. Well that’s just not the case. Sure, if someone is seriously ill their hair will tell. Or if they’re morbidly malnourished (super thin or super fat for that matter) taking some vitamin and mineral supplements is going to have a positive effect on the quality of hair coming out of the scalp.

“But for most of us, our hair starts out okay anyway – granted some more okay than others. It’s what the hair goes through once it’s birthed into daylight that makes the dramatic difference down the road between A-List and D-List. A piece of hair just 6 inches from the root has a life story all its own…

A year of sun, the sea, the colourants, the flat irons, the inept and aggressive blow-drying (who moi?… No? Maybe the idiot at the local salon who doesn’t know or doesn’t care), the one or two hundred washing cycles – all the taking out and just maybe not enough putting back to keep this amazingly strong but not indestructible protein matrix fed, nourished and protected.

That’s what 3’” more inches is addressing. That’s it’s raison d’être”.”

10 Top Tips for Younger & Sexier Hair by Michael Van Clarke

image

London: Healthier hair is often a lifestyle choice. If you are generally fit, a non smoker (do I really need to say that?), have a good balanced diet, etc. you are not going to get better hair than that coming out of your scalp. How quickly this hair dries out and disintegrates is very much down to you.

Better habits across a range of hair care areas will make a massive difference in slowing the aging process when all put together. You can have your hair dry out and split after 5” of growth, or 7”, 8”, 9”, 10”…..it’s your choice, and you don’t have to live like a nun. Here are a few tips to get started on.

1. Throw away your dryer nozzle

Unless you have thick wavy hair that you need to dry dead straight, your nozzle unnecessarily concentrates heat and can lead to excessive damage. Keep a one inch gap between your hair and the end of the dryer.

2. Always use conditioner

Shampoos open the cuticle to clean, conditioners
reseal the surface cuticle for protection, shine, and comb-ability.

3. Use a professional saw-cut comb

Moulded plastic combs often have imperfections on the teeth that can lacerate the surface cuticle, ageing the hair prematurely. 3’’’more inches professional combs (my own brand) are saw-cut from one piece then hand polished by artisans in Germany.

4. Use a deep treatment at least once a week.

3”’more inches Pre-Wash Treatment System with its unique cashmere protein complex, is the quickest and the best for restoring suppleness, reducing breakage, and maintaining the vibrancy of colours. Just 60 seconds of your time to apply it.

5. Trim ends regularly

Every 3-8 weeks depending on length and style. As the ends decay and disintegrate they look tired and unattractive; also any splitting can travel up the hair shaft if not caught in time.

6. Do not use a brush to take out knots on wet hair

When hair is wet use a wide tooth comb to gently ease out knots from the ends first, working up to the roots. Don’t believe the myth of brushing hair 100 times before bedtime. Once it’s brushed, further friction just wears it out quicker.

7. Always protect your hair in the sun

Hats or scarves are best, protective treatments come second. The uv rays of the sun break down the molecular structure of hair, which unlike skin doesn’t recover its appearance within a few weeks. Long hair can take years to renew.

8. Colour your hair professionally

Choose a colourist that cares about condition and quality, and is up to date. Modern tints are much gentler on the hair.

9. Choose a good stylist

The right haircut well executed can save you 95% of the time you may be spending over styling your hair.

10. Use a little light wax or moisturizing cream on dry ends.
This will protect and keep the hair looking and feeling healthier. Try 3”’more inches Thicken & Shine Finishing Feed.

Many women think it is socially unacceptable to have long hair past 40. Like many social observations this one is out of date. It was always about condition not length. In the old days before good conditioners, great colouring, skilful cutting and styling, etc. long dry stringy white hair just made a woman look haggard. But today we have the skill and technology – 60 really is the new 40!

Michael Van Clarke’s new range of conditioning products – 3 More Inches – is available online at www.3moreinches.com and also at his salon at 1 Beaumont Street, London W1G 6DF. T: + 44 (0)20 7224 3123 Email salon@vanclarke.com.

Helpful advice on hearing problems from Deafness Research

image

London: Help is at hand for the many people who suffer painful and debilitating ear complaints, many of which are avoidable with better ear hygiene and prompt medical attention, according to Deafness Research UK who have recently published a handy leaflet called ‘Trouble With Your Ears?’

One in ten UK people who are registered with a surgery will visit their GP each year with an ear problem and it is this group initially being targeted through the wide distribution of the leaflet to surgeries throughout the UK.

Extra copies are available from Deafness Research UK. To receive free samples, call the freephone helpline on 0808 808 2222, or e-mail < ahref="mailto:"info@deafnessresearch.org.uk">info@deafnessresearch.org.uk You can also access a wide range of information about deafness, ear problems and tinnitus from their website www.deafnessresearch.org.uk

Vivienne Michael, Chief Executive of Deafness Research UK, pictured, said: ” ‘Trouble With Your Ears?’ offers practical help and advice to patients to ensure they get the best possible treatment for ear infections, earwax or other ear problems that can cause pain and discomfort. The leaflet includes ‘top 10 tips’ for better ear health.

“There is evidence to suggest that ear problems are not always recognised by general practitioners and can be left untreated. In these cases, or where treatment is unsuitable, such as the inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics, a mild condition can become more serious.

“It is also common for elderly people attending hospital for a hearing aid, to be found to have factors other than old age contributing to their hearing loss. The fitting of a hearing aid can often be delayed while a patient is referred back to their GP for earwax removal.

“The more aware patients are of the treatments they should expect, the better the prospects for their recovery,” adds Vivienne Michael. “There is also plenty of self help information in ‘Trouble With Your Ears?’ and tips to avoid ear problems in the first place.

“The Department of Health is committed to helping patients to help themselves, yet few primary care trusts have yet adopted a ‘self care’ strategy. Applied to the treatment of ear complaints, the burden on GPs could be greatly reduced and absence from work because of an ear problem could be halved. However, without good quality information, more harm than good can be done as is evident from the number of patients who present with problems caused by trying to clean out their ears with a cotton bud!

“Through the ‘Trouble With your Ears?’ leaflet, we aim to raise awareness of ear problems and give them more prominence on the public health agenda”, concludes Vivienne Michael.

Deafness Research UK is the country’s only charity dedicated to finding new cures, treatments and technologies for the deaf, hard of hearing and other hearing impaired people including tinnitus sufferers.

Adding Volume to Thinning Hair

People lose hair for various reasons. Illness and medication (like chemotherapy to treat cancer) can cause hair loss. Hair loss can also be inherited from a parent. Often, hair thins because it is fine-textured — or because too many harsh chemicals have been used on it — so it breaks easily.

These are hair-care tips to help protect hair, prevent further hair loss, and add volume to your existing hair.

1. Work with your hairdresser to find a style that suits fine or thinning hair.

2. Blow dry hair from the roots to give it volume

3. Buy volumising products – there are lots of new ones on the market.

4. Don’t use harsh chemcials as they cause more damage and also irritate the scalp

5. Colour hair with vegetable dyes – these are less harmful.

6. Shampoo and condition regularly – dirty hair always looks unattractive and flat.

Robot performs hair transplant

Los Angeles: A robot that performs hair transplants more naturally than humans has been developed by a Californian company.

Restoration Robotics, says its robot can also pluck and move individual hair follicles twice as fast as humans, with less pain and scarring for the patient.

At the moment a surgeon must carry out a very time consuming and repetitive procedure of removing a strip of hairy scalp, separating it into individual hair follicle “bulbs”, and painstakingly implanting them in one millimeter wide incisions across bald parts of the head, according to an article in New Scientists magazine.

The robot plucks healthy follicles individually, at a rate up to 1000 an hour. He revealed that a one millimeter hollow needle removes the follicles using suction. Guided by cameras and 3D imaging software, the device is mounted on an arm normally used to place microchips on circuit boards

Officials at Restoration Robotics claimed that, while manual transplants might take around eight to 10 hours, their robot could complete the process in about five hours. The robot also had the ability to design a patient’s hairline on a computer, which could be important for giving the transplanted hair a more natural look.

The robot, which is currently honing its skills on volunteers, is expected to be used in full clinical trials later this year.

Is 100 the new 80?

Centenarians have become the fastest-growing demographic in Australia, creating a new boom generation of sprightly golden oldies.

At last count, 3154 Australians are currently aged 100 or older, with one-third of them from New South Wales.

But the latest forecasts estimate this will spiral to 12,000 by 2020 and 50,000 by 2050, according to new research published in the Medical Journal of Australia.

This will also mean more “super-centenarians” aged 110 or older, as well as more “semi-super-centenarians”, from 105 to 109.

Shattering the stereotype of immobile elderly people, more than half of the centenarians live in their own homes rather than in care homes.

Women are far more likely to reach 100, accounting for 75 per cent of the total, but male centenarians tend to be healthier, more independent and are far less likely to suffer from Alzehimer’s or dementia.

The study, by Professor Robyn Richmond, a NSW University public health expert, found Australia has one of the highest proportion of centenarians.

Japan, with more than 30,000 centenarians, has traditionally been associated with longevity but, according to Prof Richmond’s study, only Norway, Sardinia (Italy) and the US have a similar rate of over-100s to Australia.

Professor Richmond attributed the rising longevity to improved survival from diseases and improving health and lifestyles for the elderly.

“Many Australians are unaware of how many centenarians there are and how little we know about them,” she said. “It is amazing that these extremely enduring old people, whose lives carry a wealth of history, are living among us – and yet we appear to have largely ignored their effect on our society.”

She called for targeted government policies to address the social, medical and financial impact of living to 100 years and beyond.

“The consequences of the demographic transition need investigation by health policy-makers and economists,” she said.

“We need a better understanding of changes in disability prevalence, in order to make estimates of the likely short- and long-term cost implications.”

Declining fertility rates, with low population growth in younger age groups, also helped make centenarians the fastest-growing group.

Over 25 years, centenarian numbers have grown by 8.5 per cent a year.

In comparison, the number of children has grown by a meagre 0.3 per cent. Even the elderly population, aged between 80 and 99, has risen by only 4.9 per cent over the same period, the report showed.

Let’s face it. Climate change and pollution are not just environmental hazards. Through the adoption of technological advancements, Renew Medica conducts state-of-the-art skin analyses with a UV scanner or the VISIA Complexion Analysis System. The results of the analysis will reveal common skin conditions, such sun damage, wrinkling, vascular lesions and hyperpigmentation, and help you plan for a summer of healthy-looking skin.

Ban those wrinkles with 3 zones of Botox treatment for the price of 2!

Good news! Renew Medica’s approach to Botox is unique in that it strives to create a natural look by tailoring its Wrinkle Treatment to each client’s facial anatomy. Nobody wants to trade fine lines for a frozen face so commonly seen in American Botox practices. Renew Medica’s unique treatment is effective for reducing facial lines and also serves as a remedy for inducing and augmenting eyebrows, eliminating tension headaches and excessive sweating.

Rejuvenate, correct and heal the skin with 2 signature treatments for the price of 1!

Renew Medica’s breakthrough Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology can correct a variety of skin conditions, such as facial imperfections, the signs of ageing and unsightly small veins. This treatment, also known as Photo-Rejuvenation, can drastically improve skin texture and other blemishes. Celebrate Spring by treating yourself to Renew Medica’s 2 for 1 offer on IPL or Micro-Dermabrasion, which resurfaces the skin to remove dead skin cells, eliminating those unsightly blackheads and unblocking congested skin.

Harley Street Hair Clinic
29 Harley Street
London W1G 9QR

Website: www.hshairclinic.co.uk

The Harley Street Hair Clinic is one of the only hair loss clinic in the United Kingdom that specialises in FT (follicular transfer). It is internationally renown in hair restoration for men and women including eyebrow restoration.

The FT Technique evolved from the pioneering work done by Dr Woods, Dr Inaba and Dr Rassman with FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) that involves extracting follicles one by one from the donor area to be then replanted into a patient’s balding area.

The potential of this technique has enabled the natural reconstruction of balding areas with specialised follicle extraction and placement techniques. Our custom built micro-surgical tools ensure each follicular group of hair is precisely removed one by one with no extra tissue or damage to the surrounding skin. The hairs are then placed and grouped in natural orientation with a combination of artistry and the skill of talented and experienced Doctors.

The clinic also offers advice and consultation on all forms of hair loss and treatments available to help maintain as well as restore hair. All consultations are free, educational and without any obligation of any kind.

Consultations are only given by trained medical professionals and our aim is to advise on the possibilities of modern hair restoration technology as well as increasing awareness of the amazing results that can be achieved enabling patients freedom from hair loss concerns

The clinic started as a bespoke service for patients around the world seeking the finest Hair restoration and results. We have a strict policy of treating one patient per day unlike many other clinics as our focus is on patient care and providing the highest quality and care in the industry today. There are also clinics in Paris, Vegas, Arizona, and Dubai; and plans for 2008 to have others in China and India.

The clinic is passionate about solving the emotional and physical problems patients encounter as a result of hair loss and invests a high proportion of its revenue in research programmes internationally to further develop procedures including future genetic treatments for hair loss.
