Nephria – the world’s most expensive beauty bar

image

London :Nephria is the world’s most expensive and extravagant beauty bar, because it is made with real Jade.

Its unique ingredients, including nephrite (jade powder), together with pure oils from the apricot, olive and jojoba cleanses, revitalises, rejuvenates and reinvigorates the complexion. The Nephria Jade Beauty Bar contains jade which is mined from a special seam in South Korea, which has unique healing properties.

This particular jade emits what is known as “far-infrared rays (FIR)” which are similar to the radiant and warming electromagnetic rays of the sun. The human body absorbs FIR as it penetrates deep into the tissue where it transforms from light energy into heat energy, assisting the skin in expelling harmful toxins and metabolic waste. This improves blood circulation and the regeneration of cellular tissue. The FIR rays in the jade have been captured by infrared scanning (as shown on www.NewbertRevolution.com). As well as outstanding moisturising properties, it also has the ability to remove toxins from the skin. Other benefits of daily cleansing with The

Nephria Jade Beauty Bar are: i. it revives the skin colour of the face giving a fresher complexion ii. it improves the skin’s moisture and lipid balance, maintaining skinelasticity and firmness iii. it improves skin health and has a calming effect on various skinproblems such as inflammation and acne. Jade is highly prized in many historic and regal cultures and the beauty bar has the soft, sophisticated lustre of “Imperial Jade.” It comes beautifully packaged in a jade and gold coloured box with the bar sealed inside a jade wrapper. The Nephria Jade Beauty Bar is the discovery of Charlotte Newbert, who found it on her travels in the Far East and brought it back to Hampshire.

She was so enthused by what she found that she created her own company,
Newbert Revolution, to bring the product to the market.

Charlotte said: “There is absolutely nothing like this on the market. It is expensive because it contains real jade and it lasts longer than most beauty bars and its rejuvenating properties are remarkable. The Nephria Jade Beauty Bar is totally unique and bespoke and only available to buy at www.newbertrevolution.comIt costs $34 (£17.63, Euro 27) for 120g.

During the run up to Christmas the company is offering free packing and postage within the U.K. For more information contact: Charlotte Newbert on 02392 504755 or 07791 249451 or at Charlotte@NewbertRevolution.com

New York skincare DCL on sale in Selfridges London

London: Dermatologic Cosmetic Laboratories (DCL), a bespoke range of skincare products from the US for men and women goes on sale at the London store Selfridges this Friday.

DCL is high tech, innovative range formulated from the latest research to produce high-tech ‘cosmeceuticals’ which in the US can only be found in dermatologists’ clinics, are designed to tackle skincare issues head on.

There are products and regimes for every skincare concern from anti-ageing
to acne-healing, but you won’t need a degree in science to work out which to choose.

All DCL’s staff have been intensively trained by dermatologists to recognise specific skin complaints and know exactly how each should be treated. That means they know their squalene from their salicylic acid, and, more pertinently whether or not you need it. Using the latest skin-imaging technology, DCL staff can help identify your skin’s particularneeds, and then pinpoint the specific products required to treat it.

THE EXPERT: The man advising the brand is leading Manhattan dermatologist Dr Neal Schultz, who is DCL’s medical director. Over the past 25 years, Schultz has seen every skin-concern under the sun presented by his demanding clients.
If you ask him, we have become so obsessed by lines and wrinkles that we ignore the real problems that make us unhappy with our skin. Besides, Botox, fillers and even face-lifts can’t improve the quality and texture of the skin itself. The issues that really matter: colour, texture, dryness, sensitivity – are all ones that can be tackled if you simply use the appropriate products – which don’t have to cost the earth.
And once the skin issues are resolved, and skin restored to its optimum, glowing state, it is easier to make a decision about whether further work is actually,
after all, necessary. “It’s a no-brainer,” says Dr Schultz. “When we look better, we feel better. The bottom-line result has always been a meaningful enhancement of my patients’ self-esteem and overall sense of well-being.” Taking the complexity out of skincare is DCL’s mission – along with listening to the customer’s needs. The result is trade secrets of the world’s most discerning dermatologists made available and accessible to every consumer.

THE KEY PRODUCTS: five key products in the DCL range work synergistically to diminish wrinkles, fine lines and blotchiness • Balancing Cleanser (£27 for 117ml) – a formulation to prepare the skin with thorough cleansing, gentle exfoliation and dual-action moisturising (it contains humectants to draw moisture into the skin from the deeper layers of the epidermis, and also improves the barrier function
of the skin, which helps retain moisture). • Eye Refining Matrix (£40 for 15ml) Treats fine lines, puffiness and dark circles (with arnica extract) around the eyes while moisturising (with hyaluronic acid), and protecting the skin with antioxidants (derived from Green Tea Extract). • Skin Renewal Complex (£65 for 30ml) – a daytime treatment that provides all the skin-refining benefits of AHAs without the irritation, plus • Vitamin Infusion (£65 for 30ml) a complete night-time antioxidant
complex designed to increase collagen synthesis and help repair the signs
of ageing • Hydrating Serum – (£55 for 30ml) which delivers a powerful dose of
moisture to restore ageing skin to its ideal state and can be layered on
over one of the treatment products.

The DCL Centre at Selfridges is designed to provide a welcoming, clinic-of-the-future type space where customers can have their skin assessed by a trained professional and have the benefits of the DCL range explained.

If deemed necessary a further consultation can be arranged with a medical and/or cosmetic doctor making the DCL Centre the first of its kind to offer comprehensive skin health to the retail customer.
Visia/DCL Medical Imaging is the latest complexion analysis system and is popular among skincare professionals. Both normal and ultraviolet images are captured in high resolution and the system measure the extent of wrinkles, pores and spots and gives scores for the level of porphyrins (evidence of bacteria lodged in pores, which can lead to acne), UV spots (which are indicative of skin damage) and evenness (by judging colour variations in the skin tone). The first consultation provides a baseline; at subsequent visits, customers can see in detail the improvement to their
skin..

All of DCL’s products are supported by extensive and detailed clinical trials. In a clinical trial of DCL’s Acne Treatment System, 90 per cent of the patients observed overall improvement of acne after 30 days and 100 per cent of them would recommend the Acne Healing System to others.

Stress of London life ages skin

London: Living in London prematurely ages your skin by three-and-a-half years, according to new research.

Pollution, smoking, stress and poor sun-care are the principal contributing factors, said the study by a skin treatments firm.

It suggested people in north-east London were likely to have the oldest skin in the country, appearing nearly four years older than they should.

Lack of sleep, bad diet and poor sun-care were to blame, the study said.

Dermatologist Dr Sean Lanigan said: “The skin is a barometer for our general well-being so those not feeling comfortable in theirs should address various lifestyle factors.”

Researchers devised the “skin age” formula based on factors such as stress, sleep levels, diet, social habits, and pollution levels that all can contribute to premature skin ageing.

Vichy launches new solution for menopausal skin

image

Vichy Laboratories has created a new generation of skin care products that specifically targets women over 50 experiencing hormonal changes, such as those associated with menopause.

NeOVADIOL has been designed to increase skin density and re-enforce underlying skin structure with a new anti-ageing active ingredient, Pro-Xylane.™ that helps improve the appearance of sagging skin.

NeOVADIOL day and night creams are the first skin care products to combine two major discoveries which recreate skin densityand restore its natural framework:

• Pro-XylaneTM, the new Vichy anti-ageing molecule, and
• Isobioline TM, the 1st cosmetic lipo-restructuring active ingredient.

Pro-XylaneTM, is an innovation in the treatment of hormone related skin ageing stemming from seven years of research. Pro-Xylane’s™ primary action is to stimulate the production of collagen (the structural building block for all connective tissue in the human body) and glycosaminoglycans (GAG’s – water retaining molecules that give the dermis its substance & resistance to compression).

During the menopause there is a decrease in the levels of collagen and GAG’s. This leads to a change in the skin’s matrix component, which in turn affects the structure of the skin.

Why do women need it?

When a woman enters her fifties, she is likely to experience the onset of the menopause. There are three distinct clinical signs that accompany this decrease in hormonal activity, resulting in a loss of skin density:

• Skin dryness: deprived of lipids, the skin’s surface gets dry, loses suppleness and the complexion becomes dull

• Thinning skin: epidermal renewal slows down. Epidermal cells populate less frequently and reduce in number. The epidermis becomes thinner. Skin becomes slacker and creases appear.

• Sagging facial contours: the dermis is less resistant and its supporting capacity is reduced. Fibres (collagen and elastin) and GAGs fall in both number and volume.

Dr Paul Jenkins, a consultant endocrinologist at Harley Street’s Genetic Health said: “When we are young our skin has firmness and elasticity that is in part due to an abundance of glycosaminoglycans that absorb water easily thus maintaining skin density. We know that as women undergo hormonal
change at around the age of 50 they start to lose these all important components in connective tissue leading to a noticeable loss of skin density”

Application: Use every day for optimum results

Tolerance: Hypoallergenic and tested on sensitive skin

RRP: NeOVADIOL Day Cream – (RRP £18.95)
NeOVADIOL Night Cream -(RRP £19.25)
NeOVADIOL Dry – (RRP £18.95)

Instant mole screening with MoleMate

London: MoleMate, a non-invasive and pain-free melanoma screening device, will enable General Practitioners and skin specialists to scan and evaluate suspicious lesions within seconds and make instant clinical decisions ‘on the spot’.

The handheld device which has been developed by Cambridge, UK-based Astron Clinica, utilises the clinically proven Hunter Scoring System, along with an easy-to-use decision support system, to provide clear guidelines on how to assess a suspect mole against a database of examples.

MoleMate will make it possible for doctors to identify the best course of action for an unusual mole – whether it be to refer, excise or provide reassurance – during the first consultation with a patient.

MoleMate features a magnified dermoscopic view for those medical professionals familiar with dermoscopy and also the complete SIAscopy imaging suite: haemoglobin, melanin, dermal melanin and collagen up to 2mm beneath the surface of the skin.

‘Working with dermatologists in the UK for years, it became very clear that many innocent moles were being referred, causing a great deal of stress and worry to the patient, increased spending costs for the NHS through unnecessary excisions, and a reduction in the amount of time dermatologists had available for treating confirmed melanoma patients. We decided to develop a new system specifically for GP practices that would give them access to the same technology that many dermatologists were using to scan suspicious moles so that they can offer a screening service in situ.

MoleMate is the answer,’ says Annie Brooking, CEO, Astron Clinica. Melanoma, one of the most treatable of cancers if caught in time, kills over 1,700 people in the UK needlessly every year. Increasing awareness among the general public, driven by Cancer Research’s annual SunSmart campaign, has led to a significant increase in referrals of suspect moles to dermatologists. MoleMate scans could significantly increase the number of melanomas referred early, providing Primary Care Trusts and GP practices with greater budget flexibility for the treatment of positive melanoma lesions.

At the same time, MoleMate could provide an invaluable role in reassuring and advising patients on the best course of action following an instant scan, rather than having to wait for an appointment with a dermatology consultant or for the results of an excision.

“MoleMate is clear and simple to use”, said Dr. Rob Howlett, a General Practitioner in Thaxted, Cambridge. “It produces high quality images to aid in clinical diagnosis and also provides great reassurance to patients. My patients loved it!”

MoleMate consists of a hand held scanner and software that uses SIAscopy, Astron Clinica’s patented skin imaging technology that scans and visualises haemoglobin, melanin, dermal melanin and collagen up to 2mm beneath the surface of the skin.

The Hunter Scoring System, developed by Miss Jude Hunter in conjunction with GP practices and Cambridge University Teaching hospital, aids the detection of many types of suspicious lesions during the early stages of their development. MoleMate produces a patient report that includes the patient’s SIAscans together with data required for referral, or for the patient to take home. SIAscopy, developed by Astron Clinica, is used by skin specialists and medical professionals including GPs. Astron Clinica’s products quantify and manage skin health and skin conditions and assist specialists to identify a variety of skin cancers.

Astron Clinica, based in Cambridge UK, designs, develops and brings to market its skin imaging products that incorporates its proprietary skin imaging technology SIAscopy, further information available at www.astronclinica.com

SIAscopy uniquely enables medical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry professionals to visualise up to 2mm beneath the surface of the skin using both a proprietary hand held scanner and an off-the-shelf digital camera. Astron Clinica’s customers include dermatologists, plastic surgeons, GPs and aesthetic medicine practitioners.

Nanoceuticals – the latest science attacks wrinkles, cellulite and ageing hair

Nanoceuticals are the latest and most potent new anti-ageing treatments for skin, body and hair. They use nanoparticles – particles that are 100,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair – to deliver highly concentrated ingredients beneath the skin with greater affect.

The small size of these particles changes their qualities making them super-absorbable. So even though many of the ingredients are not necessarily new and already found in dietary supplements and creams such as Vitamin C Ester, Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Acetyl L-Carnitine, Co Enzyme Q10, DMAE (dimethyaminoethanol) and Idebendone, a man-made substance which claims to be the most powerful anti-oxidant in existence – their effect on the skin is far more potent.

Their increased effectiveness means that many women are avoiding cosmetic surgery in their 40s and opting for preventative and restorative treatments. The success of these new creams is their ability to work at a cellular level, making them more efficient at preventing and repairing the damage caused by free radicals, the unstable molecules, that ravage cells and cause age-related damage through pollution, smoking, sunbathing, poor diet, alcohol and stress.

The secret of keeping your skin at its best whatever your age is two take a two-pronged approach by using these topical creams and lotions to prevent damage and combining this with a diet containing a high-level of antioxidents both from food and supplements.

Both L’Oreal and Estee Lauder have already launched high end mass market products that incorporate this technology. One of the most exciting products recently launched on the UK market is a new product for hair called Tanagra, which was developed in Brazil and reverses damage caused by age and misuse. It uses nanotechnology to impregnate the hair shaft with nanoparticles of keratin, which is lost from damaged or ageing hair. The keratin is “locked” into the hair shaft by a heat process. The end result is an amazing head of shiny hair, even for blondes, which lasts for several months.

These are some of the latest treatments to arrive on the market:

Leorex

This range of products contains a patented ingredient called Nano-Silica which lifts wrinkles by a non-chemical, purely physical process. After application there is both a short-term and long-term effect on lines. The nano-particles form on and below the skin, supporting the collagen and encouraging new collagen growth. The particles also scavenge the damaging free radicals in the skin and prevent new wrinkles from developing. There are a number of products in this range but the most potent is Leorex Hypallergenic Wrinkles Nano-Relief, which costs £75. The full starter kit costs £140. Available by mail order and selected salons 08700 117563 (from the UK)

Dr Denese Instant Wrinkle Press

Another top notch product from Dr Denese of New York which tightens wrinkles within minutes of application with a freezing affect. It also helps minimize dark undereye circles with “nanopeptides” and is applied under all other creams and over them throughout the day if necessary. It contains Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3 as well as Gamma Amino Butyric Acid which is the ‘exclusive inhibitor peptide factor’ Instant Wrinkle Press costs £44.95 for 15ml and is available from Dr Denese on 0870 1900 003 or online at www.drdenese.co.uk

Tanagra – for shiny, glossy hair repair

This one-hour treatment uses nanomolecular keratin particles so small that you could fit millions onto a pinhead. The keratin is misted into the hair shaft then the nanomolecules are locked into the hair with another mist. The result is beautiful, soft and silky hair with an incredible shine. Up to three treatments may be needed each one increasing the amount of keratin in the hair and top up treatments every few months are recommended. It works on all kinds of hair but the most dramatic results are seen in extremely damaged or porous hair.An added bonus is that colour treated hair stays more vibrant and takes colour better. Costs from £50 per treatment www.tanagra4hair.com

Dermaglow

The Dermaglow Pro-Peptide Instant Wrinkle Eraser is another product that freezes wrinkles instantly and last up to 24 hours. Within minutes a reassuring tightening sensation is accompanied by a 50-90% visible reduction in lines and wrinkles. Created by Canadian Pharmacist Calvin Davies this formulation contains Palmitoyl Oligopeptide which works to regenerate the skins upper layers by stimulating collagen. GABA prevents the nerve endings in the skin from causing lines and wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles. Hyaluronic Acid, the ingredient used in many anti aging injectables, fixes moisture on the skins surface, preserving suppleness, elasticity and tone without the needle. The active ingredients are delivered using nanospheres. Costs £75 0800 328 7612 www.dermaglow.co.uk

UK patients implanted with stolen body parts, authorities admit

London: London: UK patients have been implanted with stolen body parts which may be potentially contaminated, the country’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority has confirmed.

Over 70 pieces of bone have been grafted into the patients in 20 hospitals in the UK after they were imported from the New Jersey company Biomedical Tissue Services (BTS). The company which has now been shut down and is under investigation by the US Food & Drug Administration.

The imported bones were harvested by the firm from corpses in US funeral parlours without the deceased family’s consent and without proper checks to ensure the bodies were disease free. The stolen bodies included that of veteran broadcaster Alistair Cooke, who died of cancer last year, aged 95.

Although many of the bones were recalled after a safety alert, 77 implants had already been grafted into the hips and jaw bones of British patients. These patients have been offered screening for diseases such as HIV, hepatitis and syphillis which can be transmitted from the bones of the dead.

The scandal has exposed a growing trade in body tissue, bones and ligaments which are harvested in the US and exported around the world. In the US it is illegal to sell bodies directly to the US tissue banks which take ownership of the bodies after death but they sell them on to commercial companies who harvest, store and process the samples.

Imports to the UK have increased as there is a shortage of these parts which are used to repair serious fractures and as dental implants.

The UK government responsible for monitoring this trade, the Human Tissue Authority does not know which countries export skin, bone and ligaments to Britain or even the quantities.

The export of the particularly batch to Britain by BTS is confirmed by the Medicines and Healthcare products REgulatory Authority, the agency responsible for ensuring the safety of medical treatments. They said the patients had received what is known as allografts to fill holes in jaws and hip bones.

Regulators say the chance of infection is low as the bones were steralised prior to implantation.

The company BTS was forced to close last autumn after allegations that it had forged consent forms and other documents to gain access to dead bodies from undertakers.

Among the bodies desecrated was that of Alistair Cooke, whose bones were stolen and recyled. The US authories also claim that BTS did not carry out proper screening of the bodies. Also the bones of elderly people may not be suitable for transplants as they are more likely to have degenerative bone diseases such as osteroporosis.

The director of the company, Michael Mastromarina, a dentist who lost his practising licence because of drug addiction, and two assistants, face criminal charges including soliciting undertakers to prove illegally body parts such as tendons, skin and bone from corpses.

Chemical cosmetics health danger

London: Bad chemicals in toiletries and cosmetics are putting the users health at risk, according to a body representing the manufacturers of natural products.

Women who may use as many as 12 such products daily containing up to 175 different chemicals were putting themselves most at risk to cancers and other health problems, according to www.chemicalssafeskincare.co.uk

The culprit chemicals they say are parabens, used to preserve and linked to cancer; foaming agents such as sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate used in shampoos which act as an irritant and formaldehyde which may cause asthma and headaches.

The organisation’s spokesperson, Julia Mitchell, said more detailed information and details of side effects should be displayed.

Chemicalsafeskincare said labels could mislead by, for example, using the word organic when only 1 per cent of the product actually is organic.

Anti-ageing tea better than water

Drinking tea is more beneficial than drinking water, according to research published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Tea not only rehydrates you as well as water does, but it can also offer protection against heart disease and cancer because it contains protective antioxidants known as flavanoids.

The researchers say their findings could benefit older members of the population, many of whom do not drink much water and so run the risk of dehydration.

Previous studies have shown that drinking just three a day can cut the risk of having a heart attack by 11 per cent.

It has also been shown to stave off some forms of cancer, including colorectal cancer.

Other health benefits include reducing tooth decay and possibly improving bone strength.

Some studies have suggested the caffeine in tea can also help concentration and improve your mood.

The key component is a group of antioxidants called flavonoids – a major component of tea – which help prevent cell damage.

Like fruit and vegetables, tea is a good natural source of flavonoids – three cups actually contain eight times the antioxidant capacity of an apple.

Simple skin test for Alzheimer’s

New York: US doctors are developing a skin test that could detect Alzheimer’s at an earlier stage.

Currently there is no way to detect the disease in which doctors believe may begin before symptoms show in old age. There is also no cure.

Early detection would mean that intervention with drugs that assist in minimising some symptoms may be more helpful if given earlier.

The new test is based on the discovery that the disease causes a change in a common body enzyme which means it can be detected by its reaction to certain chemicals.

The US team from the Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute in Maryland hope to bring the test to patients within five years. Doctors Tapan Khan and Daniel Alkon report their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Playtex Products reports 27% jump in skin care sales – 3 August 2006

A jump of 27 per cent in sales of its skin care care products helped to boost quarterly profits at Playtex Products, encouraging the company to reiterate its full-year forecasts.

During the latest quarter to July 1, the company said that net sales were up 10 per cent to reach $180.3m, compared to $163.8m in the corresponding quarter for 2005. On the back of this net income rose to $10.3m, compared to the $6.2m recorded for the same period last year.

Including charges and gains net profit totaled $11m, compared to $8.9m in the corresponding quarter of 2005.

Both sales revenue and net profits were up on average analysts’ forecasts, which had estimated that projected sales for the quarter would come in at around $170.8m.

For the full six months to July 1, net sales were up 6 per cent to $356.3m, compared to $335.1m in the same period during 2005, while net income stood at $23.1m, up 8 per cent compared to the $21.5m reported for the same period in 2005.

The company said that its skin care division had led the way, with a 27 per cent jump in sales for the quarter to $85.6m, compared to the same period a year ealier.

The primary driving force behind the jump was double digit sales growth for its Banana Boat sun care products, together with Wet Ones hand and face wipes.

The success of its Banana Boat sales was attributed to new products and increased ad spend. Likewise the company also said that sales were positively impacted by a shift towards consumers buying sun care products closer to the summer season.

The company said that the success of the Wet Ones sales was mainly attributable to successful seasonal retail promotions.

Meanwhile the company reported that sales for its feminine care division rose 7 per cent to reach $53.9m, whereas sales for the infant care division rose 5 per cent to reach $40.8m

Platex Products CEO Neil DeFeo said of the results, ”sales growth is strong, gross profit margins continue improve in spite of higher overall raw material costs, and operating income is growing despite the higher investments in both new products and advertising promotion.”

The company added that the performance gave it reason to reiterate its full year forecasts, stating the sales growth would be down to low-single digit figures compared to last year, to the divested brand sales of $48.6m during the course of 2005.

Net income is estimated to be in the range of $103m – $108m, compared to the $107m recorded in 2005.

BIOSKIN JETTING

BioSkinJetting is a new alternative to injecting solutions into the skin. BioSkinJetting uses a microprobe, to seperate the skin where the wrinkle is from the skin below. This action stimulates the skin to form new collagen fibres, plumping and firming the skin to create a smoother and, for many, wrinkle free complexion. Each treatment lasts between 15 to 40 minutes and is offered as part of a course of 5-7 treatments costing between $60and $150 each, making it very comparable to current injectable prices, without the potential risks. A further bonus is that, unlike other treatments, the facial muscles can move freely and are not ‘frozen’, making the overall impression much more natural, yet younger looking.

BOTOX

Botox was first used to treat neurological conditions, such as facial spasms. It come into use as a cosmetic treatment more than years ago and is used for crow’s feet, forehead and frown lines. Botox and Dysport are the trade names for Botulinum toxin, which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum type A, which is used commercially, is the most potent. Botox acts by blocking acetylcholine, a chemical that is responsible for transmitting the electrical impulses that cause muscle contraction. This results in muscle paralysis, but only temporarily, as the new growth of nerves re-innervates the muscles.

Botox is injected in highly diluted doses into the belly of the muscle using a small needle. This causes it to relax, which softens lines and contours. The most popular areas to have treated are crow’s-feet, forehead lines, neck muscles, the corners of the mouth and upper lip lines. Several injections are usually needed at specific sites, depending on the area treated. It takes a few days to take effect and lasts for about three months. It should only be administered by doctors or a nurse supervised by a doctor. It costs about $440 for each area treated.

Although its use is approved by most health authorities no study of the long-term effects has been made. It should not therefore be used by pregnant or breast-feeding women, anyone with neuromuscular disorders or people taking certain muscle relaxants.

In the UK, Botox is not licensed for cosmetic procedures . It is only licensed to treat squinting, facial and neck muscle spasms, cerebral palsy and excessive sweating.

FAT-GRAFTING

Fat is taken from different parts of the body – bottom, hips or thighs, processed in a centrifuge and reinserted into creases, lips and dents that need plumping. The effects are variable; overcorrection is usually needed, causing additional swelling, and more than one treatment is recommended for long-lasting results and there will be some bruising. There is no allergic reaction but it can cause swelling, particularly in the lips. The results last between a few months and several years. It costs between $1400 and $2,800.

LASERS AND LIGHT SOURCES

Lasers are used in a variety of ways. An ablative laser will give you a peel and burn off surface layers of skin. A non-ablative laser is used to give a form of face-lift, minimising wrinkles, increasing collagen production and tightening skin. Intense pulsed light (IPL) is used for hair removal and to treat pigmentation, thread veins, rosacea, acne and wrinkles. IPL and non-ablative laser treatment usually require no downtime, although there may be some redness. Ablative laser treatments can leave darkened areas for 7-10 days.

LIPOSTABIL

Works by dissolving fat from places which are hard to remove with diet such as knees, chin, inner thighs and tummy. It was originally used to disperse fatty deposits in the blood. It is not approved in the UK for cosmetic procedures. Costs from $528 per treatment.

MESOTHERAPY/MESOLIFT

The skin is injected with a vitamin infuction to rejuvenate, reduce cellulite and sculpt the body. The treatment can involve up to 200 tiny injections but takes less than 20 minute, usually in three sessions a couple of weeks apart.

Maintenance sessions are required three times a year. In the Mesolift the same treatment is used on the face. It can be used in confjuction with other skin treatments such as Botox

MESOLIFT INTENSE

In this treatment the ageing skin on the décolleté, neck and face are treated. Specialist Dr Georges Roman, a Paris-based surgeon diagnoses the skin and uses the unique mesotherapy technique in which a special “gun” injects a blend of nutrients and vitamins into the dermis. This is followed by a collagen stimulating Intense Pulsed Light treatment. After, he selects the best appropriate action for your skin by heating and stimulating it with an IPL light and specialist skin aftercare. About four treatments are required to return the skin to optimum rejuvenation.

PEELS

A chemical solution is applied to the cleaned skin and left on for a specified period of time. A deep peel will remove some wrinkles. Light peels require no downtime and can be done in a lunch hour. Deeper peels, including Obagi (based on trichloroacetic acid), will result in flaking or peeling and will require a week to heal. A change in skin pigment (lighter) is the biggest potential problem; others include skin-darkening, blotches, scabbing, irritation, redness and increased sensitivity. The new skin will be pink and sensitive, and will stay that way for a few months.

Superficial peels with glycolic acid require 4-8 sessions; medium and deeper peels, using trichloroacetic acid, may be a one-off event. For sensitive skin, glycolic-acid treatments may be milder and spaced further apart.

Skin cancer set to soar because of global warming, world expert warns

London: The number of people who will get skin cancer in the UK is set to treble within the next thirty years, a top scientist has warned.

Already over the last five years more people have died of skin cancer in the UK than in Australia, says Professor Mark Birch-Machin, professor of Molecular Dermatology at the University of Newcastle.

“This is not going to go away. The rate of increase is greatest in Britain.” he said.

In the UK there are 100,000 new cases of skin cancer each year and in the US 1.3 million cases.

Speaking at the spring conference of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors in London, he said that the predicted rise in temperatures as a result of global warning, some 3 degrees, would push the average summer temperatures in Britain to between 19 and 22 degrees Farenheit, when most people would get sunburn. Temperatures during the summer currently average 19 degrees or less.

Professor Birch-Machin said that messages about safe-sunbathing were currently confusing and misleading. High factor creams allow people to stay in the sun for longer but whilst they prevented sunburn they did not prevent damage to the skin cell DNA which it is now believed plays a role in skin cancers. He pointed to the recent publicity over the potential lack of Vitamin D which is made by the skin as a result of sunlight and that some sunbed outlets were promoting their businesses by highlighting this issue.

“You can get enough vitamin D by walking from your car to your office,” he said.

A test to determine sunburnt DNA has been developed by Professor Birch-Machin. Burnt DNA is thought to lead to cell mutations that cause skin cancer. See www.skinphysical.co.uk

He predicted that new “smart” sunscreens which protected against the burning of cell DNA would soon be on the market.

Fish diet helps fight skin cancer

Manchester: A diet high in oily fish helps protect the skin from the sun, researchers at Manchester University have discovered.

In a test 42 people were given supplements equivalent to eating fish three times a week, and after just one month their skin was less likely to burn. Another group who suffered from allergies doubled their skin protection after six months.

Lead researcher, Dr Lesley Rhodes said eating oily fish which contains omega 3 fatty acids helped protect skin DNA from damage and the discovery would have a significant effect on preventing skin cancer.

Former Dynasty star fronts marketing campaign for skin rejuvenation.

image

New York: Emma Samms, the former Dynasty actress, is the glamorous face of Isolagen, a unique skin rejvenation system, that harnesses a person’s own cells and grows them to rejuvenate wrinkles.

This is the Isolagen process in detail:

Isolagen’s patented autologous (a patient’s own cells) living cell therapy, or ACS, begins with the injection of a local anesthetic to numb a small section of skin behind the ear. This area was chosen because of its vascularity, lack of sun exposure, and the invisibility of any scarring.

A simple punch biopsy is used to obtain a small 3 mm piece of skin tissue, which is packed in an appropriate container and shipped overnight to the Isolagen laboratories. The minimal incision is closed with an adhesive or single absorbable suture.

At Isolagen, the tissue is cultured utilizing Isolagen’s patented ACS process. This process separates collagen-producing cells, called fibroblasts, from the rest of the tissue then stimulates them to multiply into tens of millions of new cells.

After approximately six weeks, 1 to 1.5 ml of cultured fibroblasts are sent back to the doctor for injection into the patient’s wrinkles, lines, and scars.

Generally three sets of injections will be performed, about two weeks apart, with tens of millions of collagen-producing cells being injected during each visit.

Within the patient’s skin, it is believed that the injected fibroblasts will continue to multiply and create new collagen that may fill dermal imperfections and wrinkles, and may reduce the signs of aging.

Cryogenic storage of cultured cells may also permit patients to receive future treatments with cells that were harvested when the patient was younger. It is unknown at this time whether this would represent a benefit to patients.

Benefits of facial rejuvenation

Since the Isolagen Process is an autologous system (exclusively using a patient’s own cells), it is anticipated that there may be a substantially reduced possibility of allergic reaction as compared to bovine collagen and other non-natural fillers.

Isolagen hopes to demonstrate that the use of autologous cells will result in prolonged beneficial effects, as the immune system should not reabsorb or reject them as it might with foreign materials and proteins. Patients may experience gradual and continued improvement as a result of the natural activity of the re-introduced cell structure.

Considering that the standard until recently has been bovine collagen, the three potential benefits below may represent substantial advances in facial rejuvenation.

1. Bovine collagen, a foreign protein derived from cows, is generally fully reabsorbed by a patient’s body within a few months after application, leaving the patient with no visible signs of correction.

2. As additional treatments with bovine collagen are performed, there is a gradual build-up of the body’s antibodies and the development of enzymes that compromise the treatment’s effectiveness.

3. Combined with the expense and the continued intrusiveness of ongoing treatments, the value and benefit of bovine collagen injections is ultimately diminished.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Based on ancient Chinese medicine over 5,000 years old and uses herbs to treat a variety of illnesses. The herbs which are either pungent, sour, sweet, bitter or salty, are boiled in water and drunk several times a day and often used alongside acupuncture. Reputed to be useful for skin diseases, addictions, weight loss,
fertility and breathing problems.
