FDA investigates anti-spasm toxin in cerebal palsy child deaths

image

The US’s Food and Drug Administration said yesterday that it has opened a safety review on reported side effects of Botulinum Toxin for the treatment of a number of non-cosmetic conditions.

Under review are Allergan brands Botox, Botox Cosmetic, and Myobloc, by another manufacturer, privately held Solstice Neurosciences.

All these products are injections of botulism toxins that block nerve transmissions and paralyse muscle. Such treatments can be used in small amounts to relax facial muscles to smooth wrinkles or calm severe spasms, such as those in patients with cerebral palsy.

The FDA said it was re-view-ing deaths and severe side-effects in children, in-cluding respiratory problems requiring ventilators and feeding tubes. The most common side-effects were in children with cerebral palsy.

In addition, the FDA said it had had reports of adult botulism cases, with symptoms such as difficulty holding up the head, weakness and numbness of the lower extremities. No adults had died and none required ventilators or tubes as a result.

The agency said that it was looking into whether these were reactions to “overdosing” and that no evidence linked the cases to “any defects in the products.”

Allergan said the most severe cases were often “severely compromised” children receiving high doses for spastic symptoms.

“We are continuing to work closely with the FDA to ensure they have all the necessary information to formulate their conclusion on the adverse event reports. We fully support the agency’s evaluation of the safety information they receive on our product,” Allergan said.

The company’s shares fell 6 per cent to $63.30 yesterday in New York trading.

Scrutiny over the safety of Botox has re-emerged in the past few weeks. Public Citizen, a US safety watchdog, recently asked the FDA to strengthen warnings on botulism products, citing deaths and fluid in the lungs and other side-effects.

Allergan has said Botox has a long safety record.

Allergan sees additional potential uses for Botox, including injections for severe headaches. It is a blockbuster product with at least $1.36bn in sales expected this year.

UK women clear Aldi supermarket of new wrinkle cream

image

London: A UK supermarket has had it shelves cleared of a new anti-wrinkle cream costing less than £2 ($1).

Aldi supermarket’s own label Siana Moisturising Anti-Wrinkle Day Cream at £1.89. Aldi’s own label anti-wrinkle cream is flying off the cut-price supermarket’s shelves after winning a host of awards.

The cream contains cell renewal vitamin Co Enzyme Q10 and beat the far more pricey products from top names such as Helena Rubenstein, Olay and Elemis, to be named one of the best anti-ageing products on the market.

UK magazine, Woman’s Own, which said it was ‘as good as the pricier products from well-known names’ and added: ‘Beauty industry tongues are wagging because it is so cheap and really works’.

Two thousand volunteers blind-tested the day cream for another magazine and voted it one of the most effective complexion smoothers. ‘I was asked if I’d had a facial,’ one enthused. ‘I think it must be expensive.’

At the beginning of the year, 890 jars a week were being sold nationwide at Aldi. Now more than 20,000 a week are being packed into trolleys, with dozens of branches selling out.

Manufacturers say the cream includes all the same ingredients as more expensive potions, including the enzyme Q10, which mimics the body’s ability to protect against premature aging.

Aldi’s cream follows the success of the £17 Boots No 7 Protect and Perfect Beauty Serum which was a sell-out last year.

Why women prefer face creams to fast cars, by Clarins

image

London: Women will spend £25,776 in their lifetime pampering themselves, according to new research.

Each year the average woman will spend £379-a-year – or £32-a-month – on skincare, treatments and beauty products.

The beauty conscious spend the biggest chunk of that looking after their skin, with the average woman splashing out £11,424 on moisturisers and cleansers, in their lifetime, or £168-each-year.

Feel good treatments such as massages, facials and tanning take up another £8,066 during a woman’s lifetime while hair cuts, creams and cosmetics costs a total of £6,286.

A spokesman for skincare and make-up specialists Clarins, which carried out the research, said: ”It’s reassuring that women today have the confidence to know that ‘me-time’ spent in the beauty salon and at the beauty counter is money well spent.”

Women in London spend more than other women in the UK on looking after themselves, splashing out on £801.12-a-year – or £54,476 in their lifetime, more than twice the national average.

But at the other end of the scale Bristol girls aren’t quite as self-conscious, as they only spend £276 a year – or a total of £18,776 in their lifetime.

It’s not surprising women spend so much money trying to improve their appearance – the poll, of 2,000 women,l found that almost 60 per cent say looking their best is the most important thing to them.

A huge 93 per cent of women even think that the way they look has a massive affect on how they feel.

Lynda Tarpey (corr), owner of Pretty Woman, an award-winning beauty salon in Leeds, said: ”A facial or body treatment can work wonders in just one hour to help you de-stress and feel more confident.

”One of our most popular at present is a Radiance Ritual Facial from Clarins which revives tired looking skin that’s lost its sparkle.”

However, more than half aren’t happy with the way they look and eight out of 10 women reckon they are constantly judged on what they look like.

A desperate 43 per cent would even consider turning to cosmetic surgery, with teeth-straightening the most popular procedure followed by a tummy tuck and liposuction.

The poll also found that a lazy 32 per cent of women don’t bother to take their make-up off before they go to bed, with girls in Exeter the worst culprits.

In Cardiff only 20 per cent of women polled wake-up wearing make-up from the night before.

Raj Aggarwal (corr), who runs Cardiff’s Clarins salon, said: ”You can’t put a price on looking good.

”For most people, if they look great on the outside, they feel good on the inside and tend to be happier.”

The survey also found that a quarter of Wigan women reckon their partners would find them UGLY if they didn’t use moisturiser.

A third of Brits admit to wearing fake tan in order to look good with London women most likely to go under a sun bed.

However, one in 10 of those polled think people who spend so much time on themselves are vain and should get a life.

Researcher discovers anti-wrinkle plant

image

Jerusalem: A plant-based antioxidant that fights wrinkles in your skin has been isolated by a researcher at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Antioxidants help to fight free radicals, which can break down many body tissues when present in excessive amounts. In the skin, free radicals from aging or exposure to ultraviolet light cause a breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres, leading to a loss of skin elasticity and wrinkles.

The antioxidant developed at The Hebrew University delays skin aging by inhibiting the breakdown of collagen fibres in the skin.

“The newly isolated antioxidant differs from other anti-aging antioxidants on the market in that it is able to withstand high temperatures and does not oxidize easily. This means it will remain effective longer than other antioxidants that oxidize quickly,” documents Dr. Joseph Mercola.

The plant source of the antioxidant has not been revealed because the research is still being patented for commercial profit interests

The Anti-Wrinkle Pizza that is all the rage

Rome: A so-called “anti-wrinkle” pizza created by a nutritionist in southern Italy has caused a stir, with pizza purists protesting against the desecration of the national dish, La Stampa newspaper reported on Monday.

The “primula” pizza is made up of three times the amount of fibre found in a classic pizza and boasts that it contains more magnesium and iron, thanks to its ingredients, including wholemeal flour.

At least eight vegetables or sauces in the pizza allegedly create the anti-oxidant effects against ageing: tomatoes, rocket, garlic, courgettes, basil, mushrooms, carrots and spinach.

The formula was devised by Eugenio Luigi Iorio, a nutritionist and biochemist at the University of Naples, in collaboration with Cosimo Mogavero, owner of a restaurant called La Fabbrica dei Sapori (The Taste Factory) restaurant.

Pope Benedict XVI apparently loves the “anti-age” pizza, according to the newspaper. He ate one of the pies during a party for the Vatican guards catered by Mogavero.

But the new invention has its detractors, including the True Neapolitan Pizza Association, which says the wholemeal flour in particular prevents the characteristic crust from forming.

The association has complained in the past about the sale of pizza-by-the-slice, popular in Italy.

Scientists verify Vitamin A as wrinkle-buster

New York: A new scientific study has shown it may be possible to reverse skin wrinkling.

The research, published in the Archives of Dermatology, suggests that topical application of retinol, a form of vitamin A, could make older people less prone to skin ulcerations and poor healing of wounds.

Three dozen white people — average age, 87 — had a skin moisturizer laced with retinol applied to one of their inner arms a couple of times a week for six months; a placebo was applied to the other arm. Neither the researcher who rubbed on the lotions nor the participants knew what was being applied.

By the end of the testing period, fine wrinkling — which was assessed on a scale from zero, for none, to 9, for severe — declined considerably on the retinol-treated skin, from an average of 7.25 to 5.61.

The researchers speculated that the retinol increased the production of collagen, which helps make skin elastic, and of glycosaminoglycan, which retains water.

Most of the 36 participants experienced some redness or itchiness where the retinol had been applied, though only three found these reactions severe enough to withdraw from the study.

Retinoic acid, a different form of vitamin A, is used to treat acne and sunlight-damaged skin. Sold under Retin-A and other brands, it is unsuitable for geriatric patients, the researchers noted, because of the irritation it often causes.

Eleven of the seniors who received follow-up exams found the benefits of the drug to be transitory: Six months after the study, the researchers found no significant differences between the retinol-treated skin and the placebo-treated skin.

Four of the authors of the study, are working on patents for treating ageing skin. The National Institutes of Health partially funded the research.

Wrinkles see the light – and disappear – new light rejuvenation from Ellipse

image

London:Wrinkles see the light and disappear with Ellipse’s new rejuvenation treatment

A new wrinkle busting treatment using light rejuvenation to increase collagen making skin look young and supple has been launched by the experts at Ellipse.

This new intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment has been shown to improve lines and wrinkles in less than a month. It is a non-invasive two step procedure that consists of applying a spray which contains an advanced liposome, which converts the active ingredient into a pigment called (protoporphyrin IX 2) helping to absorb the light and aiding deeper penetration. This triggers a chemical reaction that is in effect a miniature explosion that damages the skin cell, triggering a cellular repair response. This process improves the skins elasticity resulting in a noticeable 300% collagen production.

Michael Dodd, Managing Director at Ellipse explains: “What is exciting about this new extension of the product in to anti-aging is that it will add another exciting chapter to Ellipse’s comprehensive menu of treatments with the likes of ‘Skin texture’ and Photo Rejuvnenation already under its belt. With Wrinkle Reduction we can now provide customers with a one-stop-shop, non-invasive solution to better skin management.”

With the Ellipse IPL Wrinkle Reduction application, people will see lasting results for up to 12 months depending on the individual. In clinical studies it has been found that collagen production peaks at three months. A course of three treatments with three week intervals is recommended by the scientists behind the Ellipse technology but visible results can be seen after just one treatment.

Wrinkle Reduction gradually takes place from one up to twelve months when collagen stimulation is triggered offering the building blocks to smoother, youthful skin. Clinically proven by leading dermatologists Ellipse’s Wrinkle Reduction treatment will offer people either a non-invasive preventative measure or a solution to anti-ageing. Dubbed as the new “lunchtime beauty-fix” it shows significant improvement in wrinkles minus the pain or visible redness associated with comparable alternatives. Boots wrinkle cream sells out, after scientists prove it banishes wrinkles

image

London: No 7 Protect & Perfect, a modestly priced product $34 (£17, €25) has been flying off the shelf of UK pharmacy Boots after an independent study carried out by experts at the University Manchester revealed that it was just as effective at reducing sun damage, a major cause of skin ageing, as products only available on prescription from a doctor.

The study compared Protect & Perfect with the performance of a retinoic-acid or Tretinoin, a vitamin A derivative available on prescription to treat acne and severe damage of the skin. Professor Chris Griffiths an eminent dermatologist said the study showed that the formulation repaired photo-aged skin and improve the fine lines and wrinkles associated with sun damage. Boots is now keeping a waiting list for this product after supplies ran out.

The company says that it delivers a younger looking skin after only four weeks of use. It contains silicone which it says enables skin firming and brightening. It also contains an A-list of ingredients including vitamin C, mulberry and gingseng which health experts says mops up free radicals which damage the cells. It also contains lipo-pentapeptide, created from amino-acids grown in laboratories. These are essential to the functioning of cells. It also contains a serum extracted from the white lupin which slows down production of collagenase, a substance which is linked to sun damage.

New wrinkle buster claims to diminish lines in one hour

image

Los Angeles: Dermatologists in the US say they are preparing for huge demand for a new wrinkle cream that reduces wrinkles in one hour.

Preliminary results from an ongoing independent clinical study assessing the effects of new iS CLINICAL(R) Youth Complex indicate that 97% of the subjects noted significant overall improvements in wrinkle reduction, texture, and firmness after one hour.

Wrinkles are created when key structures, like collagen and elastin, that support and strengthen the skin, breakdown mainly because of free-radical damage, causing damaged skin to crease. The only way to repair wrinkling is to rebuild these support structures, which are located in the deeper layers of the skin.

“The dramatic effects of Youth Complex can be attributed to our new ingredient iNNOVASE(TM)”, reports Bryan Johns, CEO of Innovative Skincare, creators of the new iS CLINICAL(R) Youth Complex. “This unique, clinically advanced bio-complex combines innovative natural hydrators, potent botanical antioxidants, and bio-identical growth factors that are clinically proven to help rebuild the skin’s support structures, prevent further DNA damage and optimize cellular metabolism.”

Consumer response to pre-launch advertising and pre-market sampling has been so strong that pre-orders and waiting lists were required to manage the thousands of requests.

“I have found that Youth Complex’s formulation allows you to see instant improvement of wrinkled skin while also accomplishing significant long-term improvements that my patients could clearly see,” said Dr. William Heimer II of Surfside Dermatology in San Diego, Calif. “Solid science with solid results in an easy single step application keeps my patients asking me for more.”

“I have never before seen a product that literally rejuvenates the skin within hours, days and weeks. My patients come to me because they expect results. I’ve found that Youth Complex provides the things my patients ask for most — prevention and correction — all in one bottle,” said Roberta F. Palestine, M.D., who completed her residency at the Mayo Clinic and is the founder and director of the Dermatology & Clinical Skin Care Center in Bethesda, Md.

Youth Complex’s simultaneous, triple-action formula contains a matrix of dehydrated hyaluronic acid molecules that penetrate the skin nestling into fine lines and wrinkles. Acting like mini sponges, these natural hydrators expand by absorbing the skin’s natural moisture loss and plump the wrinkle from within. The bio-nutrients then work to support the newly raised wrinkle by strengthening the barrier between the epidermis and dermis, creating a type of scaffolding under the skin. Finally, the bio-identical growth factors and reparative botanicals help rebuild the collagen and elastin in the skin’s deepest layers resulting in long-term, more permanent improvements.

iS Clinical Youth Complex will retail for $135 (£65, €100) and is exclusively sold through dermatologists, plastic surgeons, medi-spas, cosmetic physicians and medical estheticians. To find a retailer near you, log on to www.innovativeskincare.com

Harley Street Medical Group launches bespoke non-surgical treatments

London: Ongoing scientific innovations, advancements and developments in the multi million pound non surgical treatments and procedures market means that women and men are offered an ever expanding range of ways to improve their appearance – without the need for cosmetic surgery.

Research conducted by The Harley Medical Group, responsible for introducing a significant number of FDA-approved procedures and treatments into the UK market since 1983, has shown that patients are increasingly confused about what the latest treatments do, which treatments combine well together to provide the best overall results and what results they can expect to see following treatment.

After 12 months of consultation amongst its medical and specialist non surgical solutions team of dermatologists, doctors and nurses, The Harley Medical Group is launching computerized photo-imaging skin analysis and personal treatment plans with treatments carried out by trained medical staff.

Using the most up to date computerised photo imaging skin analysis technology, the surface and subsurface of the skin is analysed as the face is photographed and then microscopically examined – a photographic report is then printed out with a reading of the skin’s characteristics such as pore size, age spotting, pigmentation, skin unevenness and lines & wrinkles. Taking into account the patient’s age and lifestyle, it gives a score for each of the key factors relating to the skin’s condition using a grading relative to the 3,500 women and 1,500 men whose details are stored in the system.

The Non Surgical Solutions Nurse Therapist will then conduct a careful assessment, where necessary in consultation with The Harley Medical Group’s team of dermatologists, to determine which of the extensive range of treatments will best suit the patient’s needs, providing a Personal Treatment Prescription Plan with a prescription of treatment recommendations. This will take into account the patient’s medical history, what they want to achieve and their preferences for treatment.

The Personal Treatment Prescription Plan may include, amongst other things:

◊ Wrinkle relaxing injections and or dermal fillers
◊ Medical microdermabrasion
◊ Glycolic and/or other Peels
◊ Aesthera PPx Laser (see news release enclosed)
◊ Laser Hair Removal
◊ Thread Vein Removal
◊ Hyperhydrosis
◊ Acne treatment

The Harley Medical Group’s Non Surgical Solutions Nurse Therapist will thoroughly explain each stage of the procedure to the patient from the preparation for the treatment through to what to expect at the treatment itself and detailed post-treatment care – she may also put the patient in touch with other patients who have undergone the same treatment procedure.

Prior to treatment, photographs will be taken so that they can be used as a future reference point and when planning future treatment programmes – patients often want copies of these for show and tell and share sessions with girlfriends over lunch!

Once the Personal Treatment Prescription Plan has been completed, the patient may want to book for a Non Surgical Solutions Skin Maintenance Programme, to provide an ongoing prescriptive treatment plan that’s both rejuvenating and preventive in the ageing process – keeping their skin looking the way they want it to.

All of The Harley Medical Group’s Non Surgical Solutions nurses, doctors and dermatologists are specially selected and trained experts in skin maintenance and improvement in the field of non surgical treatment application and have been specially trained to administer Non Surgical Treatments.

Safety fears put women off non-surgical fillers, says Radiesse

San Mateo: Questions over safety of aesthetic facial fillers stop many women from undertaking this form of beauty treatment, according to a new survey from US company Radiesse.

In a recent “Face of Beauty” survey, it estimates that over 22 million women aged 35 and older who have not used a cosmetic filler would be more likely to use an injectable filler for facial wrinkles if it were proven safe, more affordable, longer-lasting and stimulated the body’s growth of collagen — the key attributes of next- generation Radiesse(1).

These findings are based on a Harris Interactive® poll of 807 women undertaken late last year and conducted on behalf of BioForm Medical, Inc., the makers of Radiesse(2).

Radiesse is the first cosmetic filler with advanced calcium-based microsphere technology that has a proven one year benefit and safety profile on par with collagen. It was recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Because of its unique calcium-based micropsheres, physicians report that longer-lasting, voluminous Radiesse is the better patient value because patients need fewer treatments per year with about half as much product per treatment compared to rival treatments.

Further, the ability of next- generation Radiesse to stimulate collagen and produce results that last about a year or more with utmost safety is setting a new standard for wrinkle correction and restoring the fullness and contours of a youthful, healthy appearance.

The survey also found that the average woman looks at her face in the mirror almost five times a day, or about once every three waking hours. This fact is bolstered by more than 45 million U.S. women (60%) who responded that they were more likely to worry about their face looking old and wrinkled than their body showing the signs of aging.

When asked who men would rather kiss, 60% of women think men would find a beautiful face more “kissable” than a beautiful body.

Survey results also indicated that women between the ages of 35 and 44 are more likely to feel less confident when they notice facial wrinkles (34%) compared to their older counterparts (17% of those aged 45 to 54; and 22% of those aged 55 and older).

“This finding is hardly a surprise,” said Susan H. Weinkle, M.D., a leading cosmetic dermatologist in Bradenton, Florida, and guest speaker at a kick-off luncheon in New York City where the “Face of Beauty” survey results were released. “We are seeing a real shift in women’s attitudes from 10 years ago.

Today’s woman is looking for the next generation, cost-effective solution to help fight the visible signs of aging. She is not content to wait for the appearance of tell-tale folds and wrinkles before investigating cosmetic fillers like Radiesse,” she added. “Women today know what they want and are going for it at an increasingly younger age.”

The Radiesse “Face of Beauty” survey was conducted to determine the practices, attitudes, and aspirations of women aged 35 and over with regard to the use of injectable wrinkle fillers including Radiesse.

About Radiesse

Radiesse is a longer-lasting injectable dermal filler used in many cosmetic, reconstructive and therapeutic applications to augment soft tissue, such as facial wrinkles, folds and contours. Composed of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in an aqueous gel, FDA-approved Radiesse both fills and stimulates the body to produce new collagen for immediate results that last about one year or more. As such, next generation Radiesse is setting a new standard for the correction of nasolabial folds. Manufactured and distributed by BioForm Medical, Inc., Radiesse has been proven safe and effective in hundreds of thousands of procedures worldwide. (1) The results to individual survey questions were reported as percentages of the total number of survey respondents. The percentages have been converted to actual numbers based on data from the 2000 U.S. Census, which reported 75.5 million women ages 35 and older residing in the United States.

(2) This survey was conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of BioForm Medical, Inc. between November 27 and November 29, 2006 among 807 U.S. adult women 35 years of age or older and between December 15 and December 19, 2006 among 809 U.S. adult women 35 years of age or older. Figures for region, age within gender, education, household income and race/ethnicity were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents’ propensity to be online.

With a pure probability sample of 807 or 809 one could say with a ninety- five percent probability that the overall results would have a sampling error of +/- 6 percentage points. Sampling error for sub-samples may be higher and may vary. However that does not take other sources of error into account. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

New York skincare DCL on sale in Selfridges London

London: Dermatologic Cosmetic Laboratories (DCL), a bespoke range of skincare products from the US for men and women goes on sale at the London store Selfridges this Friday.

DCL is high tech, innovative range formulated from the latest research to produce high-tech ‘cosmeceuticals’ which in the US can only be found in dermatologists’ clinics, are designed to tackle skincare issues head on.

There are products and regimes for every skincare concern from anti-ageing
to acne-healing, but you won’t need a degree in science to work out which to choose.

All DCL’s staff have been intensively trained by dermatologists to recognise specific skin complaints and know exactly how each should be treated. That means they know their squalene from their salicylic acid, and, more pertinently whether or not you need it. Using the latest skin-imaging technology, DCL staff can help identify your skin’s particularneeds, and then pinpoint the specific products required to treat it.

THE EXPERT: The man advising the brand is leading Manhattan dermatologist Dr Neal Schultz, who is DCL’s medical director. Over the past 25 years, Schultz has seen every skin-concern under the sun presented by his demanding clients.
If you ask him, we have become so obsessed by lines and wrinkles that we ignore the real problems that make us unhappy with our skin. Besides, Botox, fillers and even face-lifts can’t improve the quality and texture of the skin itself. The issues that really matter: colour, texture, dryness, sensitivity – are all ones that can be tackled if you simply use the appropriate products – which don’t have to cost the earth.
And once the skin issues are resolved, and skin restored to its optimum, glowing state, it is easier to make a decision about whether further work is actually,
after all, necessary. “It’s a no-brainer,” says Dr Schultz. “When we look better, we feel better. The bottom-line result has always been a meaningful enhancement of my patients’ self-esteem and overall sense of well-being.” Taking the complexity out of skincare is DCL’s mission – along with listening to the customer’s needs. The result is trade secrets of the world’s most discerning dermatologists made available and accessible to every consumer.

THE KEY PRODUCTS: five key products in the DCL range work synergistically to diminish wrinkles, fine lines and blotchiness • Balancing Cleanser (£27 for 117ml) – a formulation to prepare the skin with thorough cleansing, gentle exfoliation and dual-action moisturising (it contains humectants to draw moisture into the skin from the deeper layers of the epidermis, and also improves the barrier function
of the skin, which helps retain moisture). • Eye Refining Matrix (£40 for 15ml) Treats fine lines, puffiness and dark circles (with arnica extract) around the eyes while moisturising (with hyaluronic acid), and protecting the skin with antioxidants (derived from Green Tea Extract). • Skin Renewal Complex (£65 for 30ml) – a daytime treatment that provides all the skin-refining benefits of AHAs without the irritation, plus • Vitamin Infusion (£65 for 30ml) a complete night-time antioxidant
complex designed to increase collagen synthesis and help repair the signs
of ageing • Hydrating Serum – (£55 for 30ml) which delivers a powerful dose of
moisture to restore ageing skin to its ideal state and can be layered on
over one of the treatment products.

The DCL Centre at Selfridges is designed to provide a welcoming, clinic-of-the-future type space where customers can have their skin assessed by a trained professional and have the benefits of the DCL range explained.

If deemed necessary a further consultation can be arranged with a medical and/or cosmetic doctor making the DCL Centre the first of its kind to offer comprehensive skin health to the retail customer.
Visia/DCL Medical Imaging is the latest complexion analysis system and is popular among skincare professionals. Both normal and ultraviolet images are captured in high resolution and the system measure the extent of wrinkles, pores and spots and gives scores for the level of porphyrins (evidence of bacteria lodged in pores, which can lead to acne), UV spots (which are indicative of skin damage) and evenness (by judging colour variations in the skin tone). The first consultation provides a baseline; at subsequent visits, customers can see in detail the improvement to their
skin..

All of DCL’s products are supported by extensive and detailed clinical trials. In a clinical trial of DCL’s Acne Treatment System, 90 per cent of the patients observed overall improvement of acne after 30 days and 100 per cent of them would recommend the Acne Healing System to others.

Nanoceuticals – the latest science attacks wrinkles, cellulite and ageing hair

Nanoceuticals are the latest and most potent new anti-ageing treatments for skin, body and hair. They use nanoparticles – particles that are 100,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair – to deliver highly concentrated ingredients beneath the skin with greater affect.

The small size of these particles changes their qualities making them super-absorbable. So even though many of the ingredients are not necessarily new and already found in dietary supplements and creams such as Vitamin C Ester, Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Acetyl L-Carnitine, Co Enzyme Q10, DMAE (dimethyaminoethanol) and Idebendone, a man-made substance which claims to be the most powerful anti-oxidant in existence – there effect on the skin is far more potent.

Their increased effectiveness means that many women are avoiding cosmetic surgery in their 40s and 40s and opting for preventative and restorative treatments. The success of these new creams is their ability to work at a cellular level, making them more efficient at preventing and repairing the damage caused by free radicals, the unstable molecules, that ravage cells and cause age-related damage through pollution, smoking, sunbathing, poor diet, alcohol and stress.

The secret of keeping your skin at its best whatever your age is two take a two-pronged approach by using these topical creams and lotions to prevent damage and combining this with a diet containing a high-level of antioxidents both from food and supplements.

Both L’Oreal and Estee Lauder have already launched high end mass market products that incorporate this technology. One of the most exciting products recently launched on the UK market is a new product for hair called Tanagra, which was developed in Brazil and reverses damage caused by age and misuse. It uses nanotechnology to impregnate the hair shaft with nanoparticles of keratin, which is lost from damaged or ageing hair. The keratin is “locked” into the hair shaft by a heat process. The end result is an amazing head of shiny hair, even for blondes, which lasts for several months.

These are some of the latest treatments to arrive on the UK market:

Leorex

This range of products contains a patented ingredient called Nano-Silica which lifts wrinkles by a non-chemical, purely physical process. After application there is both a short-term and long-term effect on lines. The nano-particles form on and below the skin, supporting the collagen and encouraging new collagen growth. The particles also scavenge the damaging free radicals in the skin and prevent new wrinkles from developing. There are a number of products in this range but the most potent is Leorex Hypallergenic Wrinkles Nano-Relief.which costs £75. The full starter kit costs £140. Tanagra – for shiny, glossy hair repair

This one-hour treatment uses nanomolecular keratin particles so small that you could fit millions onto a pinhead. The keratin is misted into the hair shaft then the nanomolecules are locked into the hair with another mist. The result is beautiful, soft and silky hair with an incredible shine. Up to three treatments may be needed each one increasing the amount of keratin in the hair and top up treatments every few months are recommended. It works on all kinds of hair but the most dramatic results are seen in extremely damaged or porous hair.An added bonus is that colour treated hair stays more vibrant and takes colour better. Croda reports rise on anti-ageingmarket – 24 July 2006

London: Rising demand for anti-wrinkling cream helped Croda, the speciality chemical company, to boost half-year profits by 11 per cent.

Mike Humphrey, chief executive, said demand continued to be underpinned by “the desire to be beautiful in today’s society” – the group produces ingredients for anti-ageing products of Estee Lauder and Unilever.

Croda said that sales in its core consumer care division had risen by 8.2 per cent in the six months to June 30.

Pre-tax profits for the half-year were Pounds 27.9m (Pounds 25.1m) as turnover rose by 6.5 per cent to Pounds 164.5m. Earnings per share were up 18 per cent to 15.4p. The interim dividend was 4.65p (4.35p).

Croda shares are still suspended following the Uniqema deal, which is technically a reverse takeover. Lisa Urquhart

UK government cracks down on cowboy cosmetic clinics

London: The UK government’s watchdog, The Health Commission is to target unregulated cosmetic surgery clinics.

Unregistered clinics may face prosecution or closure because of the danger they pose to the public. The commission receives around 50 complaints each year from patients whose treatments have gone wrong. These include bothed treatments using lasers to remove hair, blemishes and tatooes.

The clinics are to be targeted by undercover inspectors, posing as clients. All clinics and operators offering aesthetics must be registered by the Health Commission and patients are advised to ask to see their registration certificate before embarking or paying for treatment.

DNA wrinkle buster launches in Europe

New York: A US company has launched a bespoke anti-wrinkle cream based on each customer’s DNA.

Dermagenetics, uses a testing kit to swab the inside of the cheek. Supposedly many top stars have already handed over samples. The company claims that most creams on the mass market are virtually useless and not suited to the individual genetic makeup of each person which means we are not able to utilise the benefits.

Clients of Dermagenetics are sent a kit to harness cells which are then measured for various factors including collagen breakdown, sun damage, wrinkles, environmental damage and skin health.

The cost of this high-tech beauty is high with the DNA test costing £135 and the cream costs £125 for a bottle that lasts six to eight weeks. Clinical tests are said to show that this ‘genetically guided’ cream is considerably more effective than generic night creams.

The company says that during an eight week, double-blind, randomised and experienced a substantial reduction in the appearance of wrinkles after 14 days of treatment. After 56 days, the number of participants reporting reduction in the appearance of wrinkles rose to 70 per cent.

So what is in this magic formula? No wonder ingredients, just minerals, enzymes, herbal extract and acids that are balanced to meet specific skin care requirements.

The key is that each of the ingredients is tailored to individual requirements, avoiding potential allergies and ingredients that will not be compatible with specific skin types.

The packaging is personalised with the client’s name, and the DNA studies are kept on record so that follow-up courses of creams can be bought without the need for further tests.

The Dermagenetics skin-care system measures single nucleotide polymorphism, which are responsible for DNA variations. SNPs can inhibit the body’s ability to control the build-up of free radicals, which can damage skin cells. These random mutational events that take place within our cells are now considered major contributors to a variety of skin conditions and possibly skin diseases.

But while Dermagenetics is the first organisation to be using DNA research to create skin creams, it is not the only company to believe that controlling the ageing process is made easier if we understand our own DNA.

Surracell is a ‘personal genetic health program’, which claims to identify deficiencies and damage in our DNA and provide exclusive nutraceuticals that promote cell repair and genetic health.

Clients provide a urine sample and mouth swab, which Suracell then use to study an individual’s DNA and establish levels of damage and oxidative stress.

Within three weeks, clients are offered a full DNA analysis and then prescribed a vitamin regime designed specifically to suit their genetic make-up.

Freeze those wrinkles – new creams to keep skin cool

London: A host of new products that effectively freeze wrinkles using the latest scientific advances to revitalise the skin. These are some of the latest wrinkle-freezers available on the UK market:

Freeze 24-7 products (available at Space NK, 020 8740 2085) is a US product that has an effect comparable with Botox. The range includes a moisturiser, an eye serum and a range of lip glosses, contain gamma amino butyric acid, a naturally occurring muscle relaxant that feels cold on application and gives an ‘instant freezing effect’ by relaxing the muscles that can cause lines and wrinkles.

Another new product that uses the chill factor is the Diamond Ice-Lift (£90, Harrods, 020 7730 1234) face mask, from Spanish skincare brand Natura Biss. This product forms a mask that cools the skin as water evaporates, a bit like a fridge and the gel then solidifies.

Ice-Source (£125, www.hqhair.com ) from France that was developed with the European Space Agency. It is contained in a self-cooling pot — pushing a button on the base of the pot causes the product to be chilled 75 times quicker than in a fridge, dropping its temperature from 22C to 2C in two minutes. The cooling effect shrinks the size of molecules in the cream making them more effective at penetrating the skin.

Chilled for Skin (£80, LK Distribution, 01737 700020), is from Japan and is a pure organic marine collagen treatment that you apply twice a day before your moisturiser. It is delivered to your home in a coolbagand needs to be stored in the fridge to ensure that it remains effective.

Kenzo Vital-Ice Cream (£37, Urban Retreat at Harrods, 020 7893 8333) has to be kept in the fridge to optimise its toning and regenerating properties.

SKIN TREATMENT JARGON BUSTER

Pangaea uses dermatological and dermaceutical interchangeably, because dermaceutical is not currently as well known. Dermatological refers to the branch of medicine that is concerned with the physiology and pathology of the skin; whereas dermaceutical is a contraction of derma~ (meaning skin) and ~ceutical (meaning drug-based product or preparation)

Liposomes – are tiny fat-based hollow spheres filled with active ingredients, which are absorbed into the skin and release their contents precisely where they are most needed – under the surface into the deeper layers of the skin

Antioxidants – our enviornment leads to the formation of “free radicals” that damage healthy cells. In the skin this leads to lines, wrinkles and loss of skin tone. Antioxidants can reduce the activity of these free radicals by soaking them up ( a plus and a minus become a neutral), and can help the body to repair itself.. Well know antioxidants include vitamins A, C and E. Idebenone is the latest and most powerful antioxidant available for topical use. SOD is another hi-tech anti-oxidant that protects hyaluronate against depolymerization by free-radicals ( that is the breakdown of cell scaffolding)

Langerhans’ cells – The skin is the largest organ in area. Langerhans’ cells are located in the lowest epidermal layers. The Langerhans’ cells play a central role in the skin’s immune system and an integral part of the body’s total defence system.

Hyaluronate – A salt or ester of Hyaluronic Acid (HA). One molecule of HA holds 1000 times its weight in water. It helps pull moisture from the air to the skin. Acts as the filler /binder between collagen and elastic scaffolding layers.

Depolymerization – The breaking down of long polymers into their constituent small molecules. If a molecule is a ‘brick’ then a polymer would be a ‘wall’

DIY laser wrinkle buster to go on sale

London: A DIY laser wrinkle buster has been invited by reserachers at the UK’s University of Sunderland.

The device, which has been called Restorelite, looks like a computer mouse, and uses infra-red light, which is held over the area to be treated for a few minutes at least twice a day. Tests have shown the device has a 90 per cent success rate in zapping facial wrinkles and bags. It is hoped the device will go on sale next year at a price of about $80.

The invention was developed as a result of tests to treat cold sores. It was discovered that certain wavelengths of infra-red light kept white blood cells alive in adverse environmental conditions, speeding up the healing process.

To treat wrinkles the device is used twice a day for several minutes.

Green tea helps get rid of wrinkles says top doctor

New York: Green tea which is packed with powerful antioxidants and can protect the body from cancer and heart disease can also help get rid of wrinkles.

This week, world famous anti-ageing expert Dr Nicholas Perricone became the latest ambassador for the powerful health benefits of green tea.

The controversial dermatologist and pioneer of the face rejuvenating “Perricone” diet, favoured by celebrities including Kim Cattrall and Jennifer Lopez, says we should substitute coffee with green tea after meals.

He said: “Green tea contains healthy acids and protein, which help to improve your complexion.”

Green tea is the choice of a number of celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez because of its health properties.

Former Dynasty star fronts marketing campaign for skin rejuvenation.

image

New York: Emma Samms, the former Dynasty actress, is the glamorous face of Isolagen, a unique skin rejvenation system, that harnesses a person’s own cells and grows them to rejuvenate wrinkles.

This is the Isolagen process in detail:

Isolagen’s patented autologous (a patient’s own cells) living cell therapy, or ACS, begins with the injection of a local anesthetic to numb a small section of skin behind the ear. This area was chosen because of its vascularity, lack of sun exposure, and the invisibility of any scarring.

A simple punch biopsy is used to obtain a small 3 mm piece of skin tissue, which is packed in an appropriate container and shipped overnight to the Isolagen laboratories. The minimal incision is closed with an adhesive or single absorbable suture.

At Isolagen, the tissue is cultured utilizing Isolagen’s patented ACS process. This process separates collagen-producing cells, called fibroblasts, from the rest of the tissue then stimulates them to multiply into tens of millions of new cells.

After approximately six weeks, 1 to 1.5 ml of cultured fibroblasts are sent back to the doctor for injection into the patient’s wrinkles, lines, and scars.

Generally three sets of injections will be performed, about two weeks apart, with tens of millions of collagen-producing cells being injected during each visit.

Within the patient’s skin, it is believed that the injected fibroblasts will continue to multiply and create new collagen that may fill dermal imperfections and wrinkles, and may reduce the signs of aging.

Cryogenic storage of cultured cells may also permit patients to receive future treatments with cells that were harvested when the patient was younger. It is unknown at this time whether this would represent a benefit to patients.

Benefits of facial rejuvenation

Since the Isolagen Process is an autologous system (exclusively using a patient’s own cells), it is anticipated that there may be a substantially reduced possibility of allergic reaction as compared to bovine collagen and other non-natural fillers.

Isolagen hopes to demonstrate that the use of autologous cells will result in prolonged beneficial effects, as the immune system should not reabsorb or reject them as it might with foreign materials and proteins. Patients may experience gradual and continued improvement as a result of the natural activity of the re-introduced cell structure.

Considering that the standard until recently has been bovine collagen, the three potential benefits below may represent substantial advances in facial rejuvenation.

1. Bovine collagen, a foreign protein derived from cows, is generally fully reabsorbed by a patient’s body within a few months after application, leaving the patient with no visible signs of correction.

2. As additional treatments with bovine collagen are performed, there is a gradual build-up of the body’s antibodies and the development of enzymes that compromise the treatment’s effectiveness.

3. Combined with the expense and the continued intrusiveness of ongoing treatments, the value and benefit of bovine collagen injections is ultimately diminished.
